Prestige-branded compact coupes are usually simply sleeker versions of existing saloon models. The Lexus RC isn't like that, a coupe with an extra dimension of class that offers something rather different to the usual German prestige-branded choices in this segment. Here, we're going to look at the pre-facelift 2015-2018-era versions of the four cylinder variants of this car from a used buyer's perspective.
    History
A sports coupe can be different things to different people. For some, it must be a rewarding driving machine first and foremost. Others though, want to balance dynamic virtues with qualities like cosseting luxury and impressive efficiency. It's to these people that this Lexus RC coupe is designed to appeal. In price and performance terms, this car is designed to suit those looking at coupes based on premium-badged mid-sized executive saloons - specifically Audi's A5 and coupe versions of the BMW 4 Series and the Mercedes C-Class. The RC shares some of its parts with a compact four-door model too, the Lexus IS, but it also borrowed a little more of its DNA from the larger, more Executive segment Lexus GS range - hence perhaps what the Japanese maker hopes is a more up-market feel. The kind of thing you'd want if you had to downsize from, say, a BMW 6 Series or even a Bentley Continental GT, but didn't want to make too many compromises in luxury.
If that sounds tempting, then Lexus hopes you might also like this car's rather exclusive looks, derived from a concept car the brand first displayed at the 2013 Tokyo Motorshow. A year later, the RC was launched in production form, but only as a pricey high performance V8 RC F variant. It took until early 2016 for two more affordable versions of this car to be made available - a petrol/electric hybrid and the conventional turbo 2.0-litre RC 200t version. Both offer a more laid-back, luxurious approach to sports coupe motoring that Lexus hopes will please people tiring of the usual German alternatives in this segment. This original RC sold until early 2019, when it was replaced by a lightly facelifted model. It's the pre-facelift car we're looking at here.

Wow what a great car. Fun to drive, great styling, beautifully built and Lexus reliability. I would have one of these over any German rival due superior service, build and reliability Great review thanks.

I have the 2017 model and I love it! The door panel ambient lighting is subtle and nice. I’m surprised they stopped that for future RC models.

I own the RCF (2016, CF/TVD). Though, it is 70 percent different than the other RC models, it shares the basic architecture and platform as the other RC. Amazing car for the last 7+ years and has been a blast. Does everything extremely well. Will run fast laps around the race track all day without complaining or overheating or failing while sounding great and also a good luxury street car with big enough back seats to to fit two baby seats.

Thank you for review. Very handy.
I want to swap my C30 R-Design 2012 2.0 petrol (100k milage) next year for this car, but is very rare in UK (under 70k milage, 2.0t variant).

I have a 2016 RC 350 Rear wheel drive F sport with the 4 wheel steering and limited slip diff and it is just a wonderful car. I bought it almost 7 years ago as a low km demo model.
It has an Invidia Quad exhaust and GSF leather shifter with RCF aluminium shift paddle. I also installed the RCF seat rear console with the roller door and cup holders as it fits perfectly.
I installed Apple car play and Android auto that uses the factory track pad and also blue LED lighted Lexus scuff plates and Blue LED interior lighting and reversing lights.
It also has the darkest legally allowed here in Oz black tinted windows
Best car I have ever owned and I will never part with it. I couldn’t recommend these cars high enough for trouble free driving.
It also has the the Toyota racing braced door hinges which help force the doors tighter when going around corners to reduce flex.

Are you sure about the stingy 3 year warranty? If you have your Lexus dealer maintained I believe the full warranty renews yearly for up to 10 years or 100K miles. Also, by the same token, the hybrid traction battery is warrantied for up 15 years, I believe.

It’s even better with the 3.5 V6 engine! Why the UK doesn’t this engine is ridiculous, the German options offer V6 engines…UK Lexus is missing out here!

No, the hybrid version has an E-CVT transmission. Not belt driven - it's not a conventional CVT. Please do your research!
