I owned one of these in 1978 when I was stationed at Kessler AFB, Mississippi. Bought it used off another young Airmen who was crying to Daddy on the phone that his car wouldn’t start and the door was broken and wouldn’t stay closed. The solenoid had gone out and the only way to start it was to push start it. While pushing it back into the street he and his buddy had hit one of the concrete filled poles by the bicycle parking section and jammed the door out of line. Daddy the car dealer said I’ll get you a brand new car when you come home in a couple of weeks go ahead and sell it so you’ll have some extra money. I offered $600 cash, we did the transfer paperwork at the credit union and 2 hours later the door was realigned, starter fixer and I was cruising the highway. My trunk had a well stocked toolbox mounted on easy outs, differential gears, a helmet and coverall/racing suit which at the time I was told was part of the street/track racing package. I really do miss that car and this one brings back so many great memories. Oh, it was February on the Gulf Coast and cold as hell when your door wouldn’t stay shut!
Nope, the 72 model had the loop bumper also. I'd ditch those fender wheel well / body molding stripes and the hood stripes, it didn't come with those. And, the mirrors should be chrome. 2900 1971 models were produced. 255. 1972 models were built. I had a black 72 GTX with 3:55 gears.
@@carlkrebs1 for the life of me I can't figure out why Dodge wont bring back THIS and the 69 Charger chassies like they did with "The Cuda" that is Now the hell cat.. They would outsell EVERYTHING on the road today
Damn that's beautiful!!... that is very sharp...they need to go back making vichles like this... back then..you know what you had. That's all muscle....great video!!!
The paint is newer, but it's NOT a good paint job, lower doors look rough/painted over and the previous owner took shortcuts on the expense of repainting by not paying for inner door and trunk paint; to make that correct and matching now will require a full repaint over all that other repaint, it can't be "touched up" to match; this car is in far too bad a condition to only have 26,000 or so on the odometer so I'm having a hard time believing that odometer; I would not even make an offer on this although the car is interesting; and that engine sounds horrible/very juvenile for street driving; I suspect it would take another few thousand to get the powertrain right (including fixing some gear whine in the gearbox); good luck whoever pays this price...it is only the beginning of the spending needed to make this more than an occasional car and it isn't going to win any show awards the way it is now
That's correct,72' shared the same body. Different grille, taillights and side marker lights and because the GTX was discontinued in 71' they offered it as a trim package on the roadrunner from 72' to 74' if it was ordered with the 440 which made it a road runner (GTX) with GTX badging
Read what i said again. Sounds like. To much time spent on defining for hooked on phonics readers. There's no way i or you or anyone can diagnose a sound from a video, but i can and did state what it sounds like. Everyone mechanically inclined has heard the sound i described and it sounds just like i described. What it is I don't know, where it's coming from i don't know, without actually examining it, nor do you. So take a moment next time you respond to anything and read the comment.
I spent most of my road trips in the back floor board in this car 8 years old 440 GTX I grew up in one unfortunately I was at yours on the back floorboard I've never got to drive it
He opens the passenger door and you can see that the original color is present on the side door jamb lock pillar, and the exterior color is a different green. But that is a great pity...!!
It basically is - just a little more plush and up the price scale - and the last year it was marketed as a separate stand alone model - In '72 they made it an option( appearance) package on the Road Runner and with only one engine - the U code 440.
I think this is the car my friend owned several years ago before it was restored. the engine wasn't original, in fact it was a '67 440 but had minimal rust for a 71. the car originally had 4 wheel drum and manual steering. If this is that one theres a couple nice upgrades.
@@HoosierGarage I don't know. Says they sold it. Looks like it was hacked together by a GM/Chev guy. Lots of wrong missing parts on it. The quality of these cars keeps going down and flipping/changing hands. Plenty of small town 'Classics' dealers with a dozen or so cars 'restored' like this one. I would have rather bought it when your friend owned it. At least you could see what you were getting.
So the 440 was standard on the GTX, what happened if you tried to order both the 4-speed and air conditioning? That combo was not allowed on Dodge, not sure about Plymouth and the GTX.
@@garybishop4030 So the GTX was different? Because with air conditioning the 440 / 4-speed combination was restricted and not available on Charger, Challenger or Roadrunner.
it is NOT a 1 year only body style , chump . 71 & 72 are almost identical except the rear bumpers . pays to fully learn what your talking about . especially from us guys that have them or previously owned them .
What a rare MOPAR !! The comments are hilarious from the keyboard warrior, know-it-all geniuses!! Hey put your money where your mouth is or shut up !! You guys keep giving us great deals on rare muscle !! Thanks !!!
Correct it should have a dual snorkel air cleaner black in color. Posted below is an example. www.ebay.com/itm/1971-MOPAR-383-440-DUAL-SNORKEL-AIR-CLEANER-CUDA-CHARGER-CHALLENGER-ROAD-RUNNER-/324543392619?_trksid=p2349624.m46890.l49286
I've had and have more than a few of those, Plymouth and Dodge 3rd gen. This car has a LOT of detail issues. Never could figure why someone would spring for those crappy bias repop tires on a car that has a '77 New Yorker air cleaner. Chinese master cylinder too. NO windshield washer bottle but that makes sense since there are no wipers at all. R11 AM radio originally not 'originally' AM/FM. Those exhaust tips are for resonators, not regular tailpipes. Tag shows manual drum brakes. Chrysler NEVER offered manual disc brakes for safety reasons. I could make a list of 50-75 things just from this video at first look. I get the impression this car was completely apart in pieces for years or a parts car with the things missing/very wrong. BTW, it a 'CONSOLE' not a 'COUNCIL'. A council is group or like a mafioso lawyer. A consigliere. Car was probably slapped together by a Chevy guy.
Wow, my favorite color too…I feel your pain, I had a ‘71 B5 blue Roadrunner back in the day and of course I sold it . But I always wanted to return back to that body style. My ALL TIME most wanted American Muscle car. In my favorite metalic green color. I would buy it in a heartbeat if I had the cash.😊
What a beautiful car!
I was 9 in 1971...and this car IMO...was the coolest...
4000 rpm at 70mph. Not 3.54 gears, more like 4.10.
It would have to be mint for that price
Find one for sale that is any cheaper. There is none

True. Must not be a mopar guy they’re just trying to sell the car typical car salesman
Maybe the coolest mopar ever !
Just so I'm clear on what I'm looking at.. The engine is or isn't numbers matching? Thanks!
Non #'s matching engine, but the trans and rear end are #'s matching.
Sounds like the water pump or fan clutch bearings are going. Really ruff. Couldn't really hear motor or cam over the bearing noise
What fan clutch, it has a direct drive flex fan set up, helps with airflow but robs horse power away from engine
