Very nicely done. Turned out really well that’s something to be proud of. I love those old tools. This is the first time I’ve ever seen that configuration on a plum hatchet. Thanks for sharing and have a great week.
hey there toolscouter thanks for stopping by! it's definitely a more scarce plumb hatchet. typically see the crate hatchet with just a single notch. the plumb stamp puts this little guy 80 ish years old?
appreciate the visit! yah, I know the red mahogany is the 'proper' color and Plumb enthusiasts will roll their eyes...but the early American is kinda nice. thanks!
That hatchet came out very nicely. Some people would probably have separated the head from the handle, but I'm glad you didn't. It was solid and secure. Very nice job on a useful tool. The vise you used looks like it has the art deco lines of a vintage Craftsman.
Thanks so much, I really appreciate it! I'm not a fan of ruining something just to rebuild it...that little red vise belonged to my grandfather. it's a Wilton.
Subbed. Full time Resto person here myself. Nice to see casual restorations for the joy and not some massive contest of 5lbs of rust into an all new axe using 20k in tools. lol.
Thank you very much sir! I do my best. I have a love of history and the older I get the more it seems I appreciate and want to 'keep alive' the pieces of it that I can. Simple and honest is the only way I know. I really appreciate you dropping by and also for the kind words!
First-time viewer, now a subscriber. Very nice restoration, Matt. I have a similar hatchet that is great for kindling. I've had good success with Super Blue, but I really don't do much bluing. Lately, I'm trying to remove the rust but leave a little of the patina (Sorry, Scoutcrafter.) I see you're a Penguins fan! -Tom from Pittsburgh
awesome and welcome aboard Tom ( fellow Pittsburgher )! I can definitely see this being my new kindling hatchet. I've used super blue quite often on other projects too. sometimes, like on old firearms you'll get the perfect patina that is almost purplish brown - THAT'S a good look. Scoutcrafter is a good guy ). I need to hang a few steelers/penguins artifacts in the garage. thanks again, really appreciate the visit!

Love the hatchet...now I must find one. Plumb would prefer a maroon handle, but you do you.

That's a really nice little hatchet. Looks great Matt! Nicely done
Thank you! You're always one of the first to spot the new video - appreciate it!! 👍
Cool hatchet! You did a fantastic job with this one I like the finish you achieved with the bluing, burnishing and oiling. 👍
Thanks David, appreciate it! that little axe is just fun, and doesn't look it's age anymore!

@@MattsGarage1791 Not as of yet this morning. I have to go out and bring in my traps and start boiling..

Very nice.

@@MattsGarage1791 Keep it up! We are Rebels aren't we? Doing our tools how we want them. 😁
@@Uwannawatch might have to rename the garage to 'Rebel Restorations' or even 'Rebel Garage'!!
I use super blue a lot on gun parts. works flawlessly.
Agreed, super blue is a great product. I'm also a fan of caustic bluing with peroxide, salt and vinegar. takes longer but produces a smooth finish.
