    In my graduation , i did this experiment for Compound Semi Qualitative Analysis. This Lead Iodide golden crystals gave the confirmation of presence of Lead in given compound. I filtered out the crystals and dried them.I loved that experiment.

    You can avoid having to use lead(ii) nitrate by using tin(ii) nitrate instead. The results are almost the same, except that tin(ii) iodide is reddish-orange, as opposed to gold-yellow.

    • @lorez201
      @lorez201 9 років тому

      ***** Is what tin(II) nitrate or iodide?

    • @lorez201
      @lorez201 9 років тому

      ***** So what you want to know is if there is another metal nitrate that can be used that will yield an iodide with the same color as lead(II) iodide? If that's what you're asking, I don't know anything off the top of my head. If that's not what you're asking, then clarify.

    • @lorez201
      @lorez201 9 років тому +1

      ***** The reaction shown in the video starts with potassium iodide and lead(II) nitrate as reagents, forming the target compound of lead(II) iodide. In my original comment, I made the statement that, to avoid using toxic, soluble lead(II) nitrate as a reagent, one could instead use tin(II) nitrate in an analogous reaction, and form the target compound of tin(II) iodide.

    If the solution of potassium iodide and lead nitrate are already in liquid form (already prepared since a long time)?
    Should we pour hot water in each: potassium iodide (aqueous) and lead nitrate (aqueous)..Then merge the two solutions in a beaker.
    The Golden crystals will be appearing??

    i tried this in class, the reaction just looked powdery. since we were using a very small container, it was cooling quickly, so i thought adding more water to it and heating it will improve the formation of big crystals, but as soon as i added more water to the solution, the yellow color disspeared . after that, i hought about heatig it, but i didnt see any change. Can somebody tell me what did i do wrong?

      Your problem is that your solution is no longer supersaturated at room temperature because of the increased amount of solvent(H2O). Either add more reagents or evaporate water from the solution(notice his mixture ratios for a larger example, or use an oil-bath for a slow steady cooling)
