M7100 165mm crank + garbaruk Dm chainring has been my go to for years now on gravel bikes. 2mm difference in chainline but works nice and a wider q factor is a bonus.
Just noticed your t-shirt! I haven't seen Poway referenced in a long time. I lived their twice in my life! Interesting crank, I like that there's even a 2x spider option on their site as well.
Nice install video! I've been running their mtb crank mounted to a Wolf Tooth Spider/Chainring on my Anthem for a season (paired with their 11sp mtb cassette), I dont notice a diffence between that and the RF turbine it replaced, but its a super clean/great looking crankset and lighter/cheaper than RF carbon options. I too had the same spacer issues as you - instructions said no spacer, but i had to run 2mm driveside to to get proper clearance.
38t is perfect for my 1x gravel bike paired to my 11-46. I may upgrade my 11spd GRX derailer with the Garbaruk cage but I’m more interested in getting those XC cranks for one of my Mtn bikes. As you know Garbaruk offers them in many different color combinations.
My lightest bike is 22 lb and I’ve been perfectly happy with it as is, but pointing out that it’s possible to remove whole pounds off a build like mine hits home. The flip side is dollars per ounce of course. Nice to have options if I ever want to go there.
Going from 22lb to 17lb isn’t going to make you that much faster, if at all. It’s definitely a different experience riding a light bike though. Fun, but not necessary
Just an FYI. Specialized frames from the factory are not compatible with a 30mm axle. This is because the frame is only faced to 41mm at the BB. 30mm axles require BSA30 BB which is usually 45mm in diameter. I had to face my Tarmac SL8 with a Park Tool facer which has a 46mm diameter. Watch this video clip for more details on this issue. ua-cam.com/video/g4KPv6kTID0/v-deo.htmlsi=v7ITk3cG0TgVLthp&t=573
Shame shimano doesn’t do the 800 series cranks in 165mm. I too am running 600 series for this reason. I don’t see a reason to switch to anything lighter - I actually run garbaruk GRX 38t chainring on mine and they are excellent!
I mentioned that it was 7075-T651 alloy which implies aluminum. If you're curious, there's no such thing as 7075 steel, Ti, or magnesium alloy. Cheers!
For sure. There’s a ton of that in cycling. We still call it a bottom bracket when it has nothing to do with a bracket. We call them braze-ons for carbon bikes, which isn’t a thing either. We call it a thru axle, when we really mean thru axle skewer, etc.
More aggressive than diverge for sure. Much stiffer too. I wouldn’t say it’s a comfortable ride, especially coming from the steel ritchey outback. Cruz is built for stiffness and speed
Can we install this new crankset on a road bike? Also, is it possible to install the older GRX crankset on a road bike which has Shimano 105 components?
GRX cranksets have a 3.5mm wider chainline than Shimano road cranksets. A 105 front derailleur may not have the lateral adjustment range to accommodate it.
Garbaruk has a 10-52 11-speed cassette for GRX? I have their 11-50 Shimano compatible cassette for my 11-speed GRX, but if they have a 10-52 cassette for GRX, then I'm all for it. Can I just install the 12-speed Garbaruk cassette on my 11-speed GRX Di2 with Garbaruk long cage and just mess with the limit screws?
@@TheBikeSauce The Garbaruk website only lists--for 11-speed--an 11-50 cassette for Shimano free hub and a 10-50 cassette for Sram free hub. The 11-52 cassette is listed under 12-speed at the Garbaruk website. 😞
Two halves of 7075 aluminum bonded together…hmm…can we say Magic Motorcycle crank from the 90s? Didn't that suffer from bonding issues? Come to think of it, didn't Shimano also suffer from bonding issues with their Hollowtech cranks? I guess time will tell if Garbaruk does any better.
The GRX is also a Hollowtech crank. Haven’t heard complaints about it. Hollowtech has been around since the 1990’s. On the whole, they have been some of Shimano’s best cranks. The DuraAce cranks with issues had way too many seams and not enough qc on required tolerances.
@@petesjk Most of the Shimano ones have been welded. They did have issues when they moved to bonding on the DA9000, but looking at the inner portion it's not surprising, the finish and clearances on the interfacing portions of the failed units were sub optimal. On the other side, Cannondale has had very very few issues with their bonded cranks, and they've made orders of magnitude more than Alex Pong ever did including both his time independent and under C'dale. Adhesives have changed a lot since 92.

This uses the same as Cannondale. But they make their own ring for this crank because it's designed around using external BBs so it has to offset the other way to compensate for correct chainline.

1:50 looks good even without considering weight
FSA's Energy Modular Hollow Forged crank arms are $100 on Amazon, 500g, 38t DM chainring from PASS QUEST, 78g for $48, $1/gram weight saving.

@@TheBikeSauce Thanks, I appreciate that. 🙂 Elegant build, well done.
just an advise, put the bike on the ground when you're putting down torque on the crankarms. just to pull the stress away from your seatpost
Had the same thought. I was far less worried about the crank arms than I was about the post and frame being torqued on.
Good call, but I was applying a counter torque to the other arm. Didn’t feel much load on the frame
Riding the bike on the saddle will provide more force anyways.
Really no sense in doing that for this scenario. Its worth doing for threaded bbs though.

Definitely 😆. But that’s harder to do, so we pay for lighter components

100g of weight savings is pretty good. If you can find 7 places to reduce 100g that's 2 lbs. Not bad.
your math's a bit off. 1lb is 454g, so more like 9 places.
If you want to shave another 150g off the build, can't go wrong with Tufo (Swampero) tyres
