- CTEV, or Congenital Talipes Equinovarus, is a condition where a baby is born with one or both feet turned inward and downward. Treatment typically involves a combination of non-surgical and surgical methods, and it's important to consult with a orthopedic surgeon for an individualized treatment plan. Here are some common approaches:
Casting and Splinting: Gentle manipulation of the foot followed by casting or splinting can help gradually correct the position of the foot. This is often started in the first week of life and may continue for 2-3 months.
Physical Therapy: Physical therapy recommended to help maintain range of motion and strength in the affected limb.
Ponseti Method: The Ponseti method is a specific casting and manipulation technique that's often used for CTEV. It usually involves a series of casts and may be followed by a small procedure(Tenotomy) to lengthen the Achilles tendon.
Surgery: In some cases, surgical intervention may be necessary, especially if non-surgical methods are not successful or if the condition is severe. Surgery may involve soft tissue releases, bone realignment, or a combination of procedures.
Bracing: After treatment, a foot abduction brace is often used to maintain the correction and prevent relapse. The brace is usually worn full-time initially and then at night.
The specific treatment plan will depend on the age of the child, the severity of the deformity, and the preference of the medical team. Early intervention is important to achieve the best results. Please consult a orthopedic specialist for a comprehensive evaluation and personalized treatment plan.
