- Join Roger Mooney in this insightful presentation as he explores a unique set of Hungarian stamps from the Soviet-style republic established in Hungary after World War I. The first half of the presentation provides a comprehensive review of Hungarian stamps from the monarchy period, setting the stage for the geopolitical aftermath of World War I and the emergence of these distinctive stamps. At the 20:30 minute mark, Roger explains how to distinguish between engraved and lithograph stamps. He then shifts focus to the primary subject of this presentation: their singular cartoonish style of design, contrasting them with the subsequent stamp issues under conservative Admiral Horthy. He also discusses the 1949 reprint of this set, commemorating nearly five decades of communist rule. Roger concludes by comparing the stamps to Gene Ahern's cartoon character Major Hoople and proposes a new stamp idea for the set. This presentation is a compeling mix of Hungarian philatelic history and comedic artistry.
Great presentation, very informative.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thank you again! Going through some inherited collection material just the other night, I ran across this set and remembered this thumbnail. Great background info. At first I thought they were some 1950s Soviet style grotesquery. Then realized I was reviewing a 1939 standard Scott worldwide album. Ha ha.
We love that you remembered Roger's presentation and went back to learn more about them. Those designs are wild for the 1930s, aren't they? Stamp collecting is full of these unexpected nuggets!
Great presentation! Wow, Hungary, like so many other East European countries had such a complicated and interesting history. I really enjoyed this interesting video, and I loved those "caricature" stamps. Thanks!
Thanks, @GreatStampAdventure! We're glad you enjoyed the presentation. Hungary's history is fascinating and we appreciate Roger drawing our attention to these truly distinctive set. Something to keep an eye out for. That’s part of the fun with stamps - there is always something to keep an eye out for. The fun is in the search!

Thanks for another informative video 😊. I’ve got tons of Hungarian stamps, but I don’t think I have those. I’ll have to keep my eyes peeled at the next stamp show. They are a lot more interesting than the prior ones.
We're glad you found the video informative. These Hungarian stamps certainly are distinctive. Best of luck tracking them down at your next stamp show! Happy hunting!
