I remember putting on cd hearing the title track and thinking WOW this kicks some major ass they are BACK with a vengeance only to be disappointed as the album progressed .

Circus solidified the phoniness of Gene n Paul for me...but,96 Tiger Stadium renuinon,back in Makeup..was awesome
Into the Void by Ace is by far the best song. Wish he and Peter got to play on the entire album. A heartbreak.
“We are one” and “ Journey of 1000 years” are excellent.

Loved it then, love it now. I received an advance CD back then and premiered it with a friend while playing my KISS Bally pinball machine. Magical times ! Then the Halloween events with Milennium, MAD TV, the stadium show, the 3D stuff...... WOW !!! I was completely unaware of all the behind the scenes drama but even now.... it still sounds like KISS.
Am I the only one who loves the psycho circus album?
I don't love it; but I kinda like it. Remember how bad rock music was in the 1990's! Psycho Circus was pretty damn good compared to what else was being released.

I’m gonna look at this album from when I was released. We didn’t know we thought there was the original four. And at the time kiss made it seem like this is the album for the fans. Like we are one no pun intended. The album was intended to make you feel like you are a part of kiss in my opinion. I do like the song psycho Circus. And Into the void, Within. You have to remember there was no UA-cam or smart phones in 1998. We were never supposed to find out the truth.
When this album was released, I was 29 and it was the second coming for me. I was so into them just like I was in the 70s and early 80s..
We Are One is not only my favorite song from this album, it's also one of my absolute favorite KISS songs from the catalog!!

It’s a bad song
I can understand the absence of Ace on Creatures and Peter on Dynasty, but this was supposed to be a, "reunion" album, but Gene and Pawl Thtanly pulled the wool over our eyes once again. I got a bit suspicious when I heard, "Within" because it sounds like it belonged on Carnival of Souls.
the start of within is a complete rip off of a billy squier song called hand me downs
I love that album. I’ve been iffy with Peter criss song. I actually enjoyed that album although my all time favorite kiss album would be revenge
First off. I knew as soon as I heard within off Psycho Circus, it wasn't the original KISS. It sounded like a leftover track from Carnival of Souls. Secondly, I saw KISS on the Psycho Circus tour in Nashville, Tennessee. The 3-D show was on point that night, and it was awesome. I ran into Tom Keifer from Cinderella before the show. At the time, I had no idea he lived in Nashville?
Psycho Circus should have been straight up the original four members of KISS and Eddie Kramer. Only the original four writing and recording. Eddie Kramer giving KISS the Rock And Roll Over/Ace's solo album/Alive II side four 70's KISS sound everybody loves. Just straight up rock and roll songs about girls, rock and roll and being rock stars.
KISS should have filmed the entire process for the fans to see when it was over. But, like the final show in NYC, they dropped the ball and screwed the fans.
I loved the reunion tour. As close as I ever got to seeing 70's era Kiss. As for Psycho Circus, I also was duped at the time thinking it was all of them playing on it. It was probably more of a money thing than a talent thing. Gene and Paul didn't want Ace and Peter getting as much royalty $$ as they were. Anyone remember the Psycho Circus video game that came with the CD? It was better than the album but still kind of sucked.

Can’t for the life of me understand all the love for “We Are One”. The lyrics are sappy and it doesn’t rock hard at all.
they just didnt want Ace or Peter on that record, because they didnt want to pay them..... It was a money issue nothing else
Unpopular opinion/taste here: I love this album, I really don't care if the originals didn't play in all tracks. I don't compare it to other KISS albums like most people do. It is what it is.
I also feel it has a loose "concept", possible hint would be the fanfare coda in "Journey Of 1000 Years", having the same melody as "Psycho Circus" solo, among other things.
Loved the Song Psycho Circus and that was about it.
I would say the album could have been better. But there was some decent songs on there. it’s a little unusual for bands that old to right great new songs any ways.
I generally understand the decisions Paul and Gene make with regards to Kiss, but i think recording Psycho Circus without Peter and Ace was a mistake. I doubt there would have been any drop in quality, and the album would have gotten more cache with fans
I bought the album when it first came out just on the strength of the single, never got into the rest of the album 😑 Last time I spent a cent on Kiss

Its a good album, but not great.I was psyched when it came out, but after listening to it, I wished it was more classic Kiss sounding. I still enjoy it for what it is. My favorite songs are Within and We Are One.

I grew up in the late 80s, so that’s my era. I love the BK/EC era. Don’t get me wrong, I love the Ace and Peter stuff too. But musically, I’d rather listen to HITS, Crazy Nights, Revenge, LIU.
It’s interesting that most of the drums are performed on the album by Kevin Valentine who was on some of Hot in the Shade.
It's also interesting that Kevin Valentine said that Peter needed very little help to get back in shape for the Reunion tour, and that there was no KISS song he couldn't play.
The album was the biggest disappointment of all KISS albums followed by the lamest tour ever. I'm up here in Portland, ME and Paul Thtanley of KITH shouts out after the opening number, "HELLO, PROVIDENCE!". What a fucking clown. The only high point was Ace playing 2000 Man. I went to grab a hot dog when Gene did that lame Within song. Peter looked like he was just going through the motions. Lame and unmemorable all the way around. You didn't miss anything IMO. It was made doubly disappointing by the fact that the last time I had seen them on the reunion tour in '96 THEY FUCKING ROCKED!!! So sad how quickly everything went to shit again.
Yeah, this pisses me off how they all 4 didn't play on all of the tunes.
Dreamin is a good track.
I'd say Psycho Circus is a B/B-.
I really like the title track, Within, Into the Void, I Pledge Allegiance, You wanted the Best.
I don't have much use for anything else on it.
It's WAY better than Monster or Sonic Boom.
I like Revenge and a couple tunes on CoS. But other than Revenge, PC was the best Kiss album since Lick it Up.
I was really looking forward to it, and I think I was going to like it no matter what.
Do you think Gene really wrote "We are one?" It's my favorite on the album also. I went to the Dodger Stadium, Halloween show...the 3D was ok...but they had the wall up and you couldn't get close to the stage. Also, it was cold outside that night. Unusually cold for Los Angeles. What is Schmackamagob backwards? Have you said it into protools yet and reversed the wave?

Psycho circus was a pretty awesome video game though...
That album was such a disappointment. The only tracks worth a damn were Into the Void and the bonus track In Your Face, both Ace songs. The fact all 4 original members only played on Into the Void is pathetic. What kind of “Reunion Album ” is that? And why they didn’t include It’s My Life is beyond me. It was recorded for the album, features all 4 original members and sounds great. It was also a song that had been kicking around the KISS universe for decades, so it has history.

I've been a fan since 1974..it bothers me that most of their albums they don't play on them...dang it..a real band play their instruments...but no...i never understood that

Only song I know is"Psycho Circus". Ok song but I've never felt inclined to listen to the album.

I too was highly disappointed with that album. I still liked a few tunes but there was nothing that I felt was reunion worthy.
But I was stoked to see them back together again.
This was a bigger disappointment that the aborted DLR/VH reunion attempt in 1996-97.

I bought the album when it was new. My opinion has never changed, I like the album a lot. I like 7 out of the 10 songs. Psycho Circus, Within and Into the Void are my favorites.
I bought the album shortly after it came out, without high expectations. It's ok. I'd rank it around the middle of the catalogue, ahead of Crazy Nights, Dynasty and Unmasked for sure. The songs I like most are Psycho Circus and Journey of 1,000 Years.
Honestly, it's one of my favorite Kiss albums. In many ways, it's an extension of Carnival of Souls, just with happier lyrics. Dreamers is one of the biggest slept on Kiss songs (yeah yeah I'm Eighteen) but it's so atmospheric. Speaking of, Journey of 1,000 years was the icing on the cake. Very underrated album.
initially I was excited like everyone..But over the years I fell out of love with it.and haven't thought revisiting. I may now but good chance I'll just play Asylum instead. ;)

They ( Paul Thtanley ) were attempting a blueprint formula for success, looking for a new “ Destroyer” success story.
Especially since they tried to give Peter a new Beth type song. The songs on the album sounded more like 80s glam rock and I too enjoyed “ We Are One” but overall-

Does Paul ever take responsibility for crappy Kiss albums? He blamed Ace and Peter even though the barely played on it and even blamed Bruce Fairbairn. Then he goes and produces even crappier albums like Sonic Boom and Monster.
I was super excited to hear a new KISS album by the 4 original members!!!
But was pretty disappointed. Only 3 songs I really liked. Plus it wasn't even played by all of them . 😡😤
When it 1st came out I thought it was just "ok" down the road yrs later liked it more. Especially the last two tracks.

KISS have always been about what they are selling at that moment.
Maybe not the worst, but certainly the most disappointing album of their career imo.....Bob Ezrin maybe would have made it better, but still, I agree only half is good, so you can't really polish a turd, They tried to appeal to their 70s fans and Revenge fans with a few heavier tracks, but it just doesn't work imo.

I blame Bob Ezrin for getting them into session musicians/ghost players and outside songwriters in the first place. I love Ezrin but Destroyer was the first to have this and Ezrin was into this more than say, Jack Douglas was
The reunion clouded their judgement. The corporation of KISS was kick-starting backup again and they had dollar signs in their eyes. Each member had their lawyers and were pushing for legal footing on their cut. What? You want us to sit in a rehearsal room like tortured artists and write songs? Pfft Ha! Hey Doc, let's hire this out! Oh and remember don't tell Peter that he's getting paid less than everyone else, shhhh on that. Doc: Yea A-Okay, you got it!👍
I also thought it was the people in the band playing the songs on the album. It sucks you didn't get to see that show. I was born in Denver and the Super bowl was a Broncos victory and my favorite band as a kid playing. It's a bitch they always screw people for their own benefit. Damn good KISS WEDNESDAY.
Psycho in my opinion is their best album...yes I know not everyone played on every song but still like it. I put Sonic Boom on high hopes of being a worthing follow up...however feel it is like Psycho part 2 the inferior sequel.
I was really disappointed in this album. The news had already filtered-out that Ace & Peter didn’t play on-it very much, or have any creative-input.

I wish they would explain why they recorded with studio musicians and didn’t give Ace and Peter a little more input. Ace and Peter were hired employees at that point . I sure don’t blame them for not making them equal partners again. But I don’t really see the point in doing it the way they did. Unless Ace and Peter were just asking for to much to do it.
Ace and Peter never asked to be "equal partners" in KISS. The fact is, KISS were Paul and Gene; Ace and Peter were hired employees. And the hired employees did not have an album in their contracts. Paul and Gene - seeing the massive success of the Reunion tour - figured that a Reunion album would also be massive, and they didn't want Ace and Peter to make any money off of it.

I think there’s probably more to it than that. It really wouldn’t matter if Ace and Peter made money off the album if it did well. Gene and Paul has final say on what material goes on the album and royalties can be negotiated .
@@timg185Yes, royalties can be negotiated. But Paul and Gene wanted ALL of the royalties. That is why they paid session musicians a flat rate for their parts on the album and Ace and Peter were paid a small sum for the little work they did on the album.

All I’m saying is they could have probably paid Ace and Peter the same as the studio musicians if they wanted to. I think Ace got royalties for Into the Void.
Paul was dedicated to KISS his entire life . He has somewhat of an eccentric personality . If I had to bet I would say he was reluctant to give up creative control . Assuming that the album was successful , they were going to make money regardless. Ace and Peter were hired employees at that point . Allowing them more creative control might cause a change in the dynamics of power in the band . Peter held his success with Beth over their heads forever.

Psycho Circus doesn’t suck. It’s not an awesome album by any means, but there are some good tunes in it. I was disappointed when I found out they didn’t all play on every song. But looking back now, I shouldn’t have been surprised. I’d put Psycho Circus in the lower bracket of KISS albums, but I can think of at least three that are worse. I’d actually put it with Unmasked, The Elder and…yes, Love Gun. All albums that have good songs, but overall, not “great” albums.
The only song on that record that sounds like KISS is into the void I believe Ace said himself that he wrote that on the spot I wish Paul would’ve put his greed to the side and paid Ace and Peter the money they wanted to play on that whole record the drums was just mediocre average anyway I thought a few of those songs was corny I think they only played maybe two or three songs off that record live when I saw them I think they had poison on the road with them in 98
The only song Peter played on. The production is so much better than the rest. Story is Ace hated Fairbairn's production and said I'll do it myself with Peter. The whole album could've been great, but no...

"Early days?" I don't think so. I think Ace had *one* guitar solo that was replaced by a session player in 1976. I don't think Peter ever had a "ringer" until 1979, when he was recovering from a car accident that injured his hands.
It's a ok album but it should have been all for original members playing like deep purple did perfect strangers album.but u know Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons ran kiss
Ace’s Trouble Walkin is by far a better album than PC.
Never matters if the 4 of them play on the album or not. The whole songwriting is simply horrendous, except for the title track, which is massive rock anthem with a f**cking hook. They should have released a 2 track EP instead and saved us the earache of listening to this abomination.

Psycho Circus is one of the worst Kiss Albums period.
PC has a handful of good songs. But don’t get it twisted! let’s cut the deck! That album was a massive disappointment. The album had no direction and was completely devoid of the spirit of the original line up
I've always liked this album. The only songs I don't like are "Finally Found My Way" and "Dreamin". Yes the politics and behind the scenes are idiotic, but I judge music by the music. I don't know why people can't do that

Kevin Valentine playec drums on this album.... He's an excellent drummer, I really believe that they asked him to dumb it down to sound like Peter. On the album came out, I was sold hook line and sinker on the concept that Jason Peter played on this....... And I believed it! My only slight suspicion was at the fill that the drums play just before the guitar solo of psycho circus... It was simple, but it was a flam that I've never heard Peter do.... And he hasn't been all that innovative in 20 years at that point..... So that Phil seemed completely out of his wheelhouse... But I remember interviews with Peter and modern drummer at the time and he was selling it so well...... What a deception.
But despite the deception, I love the production and I think there are some great songs on that album..... And a couple of real duds. LOL
What makes you "really believe" that Kevin Valentine was asked to "dumb down" to sound like Peter?
@@Tricky2002 in recent years, I've discovered Kevin Valentine's original band from the early 80s..... Donnie Iris and the Cruisers. Abduct deep into their catalog, and have been a huge fan.... That's besides the point, but hearing Kevin Valentine in a different context lead me to believe that his drumming for psycho circus was a little more simplified intentionally.

@@RealitySuite I think Kevin played to the KISS songs he was given. Kevin Valentine was the drummer who worked with Peter to help get him on point for the Reunion tour. He said that he only had to work with Peter 4-5 hours a day for about a week and Peter was ready. He said there wasn't a single KISS song that Peter couldn't play. He even said he "didn't know" why Peter wasn't used on Psycho Circus, because he could have played those parts. And he was right; Peter played those parts just fine on the tour.

This isn't an argument..... As a drummer, I hear an absolute different feel between Kevin's playing and Peter's playing on psycho circus. It is what it is.
@@RealitySuite "Didn't" isn't the same as "couldn't." Peter probably played different because he wanted to play the song the way HE would have. Peter's playing was often different live compared to his studio recordings in the 1970s as well.

Sonic Dud is a worse album than Psycho Circus. I hate that album.
I liked it a lot back in the first few years after it was released. Now I just don’t think the songs were good enough to last for me.

I hate this album. There are some good songs, but this record is padded. The one track the original band plays on... their chemistry is so off, it's not compelling. Peter being made to sing the absolute worst ballad in the KISS catalog is unconscionable. Shame on Paul for screwing us out of a decent rocker track in that slot. And fuck Hootie and the Blowkiss...err, We Are One. Just a precipitation of the 2nd downfall of the original KISS.

You Wanted The Best was a steaming turd, but the rest of the album is alright… definitely not anywhere close to their best.
Psycho Circus isn’t that good. It’s kind of all over the place, musically. The song writing is lacking.
I like Psycho Circus. Within and We Are One, the rest is crap.

I don't have a lot to say about Psycho Curcus except it's embarrassing and cringey. You Wanted the Best could nor be more ironicalky titled because it's worse than When You Wish Upon a Star. Rock bottom...not the song, but where I'd place You Wanted the "Best".
As soon as i saw the number of tacks on the disc i was thoroughly massively disappointed as i was expecting 14 or 15 tracks with Peter and Ace getting at least 3 tracks each but nooooo!!! The dysfunction REIGNED!!!!
