- Airbus Considers Possibility of Reviving A380 Production
The return of the Airbus A380 production line is not entirely ruled out, according to the head of Airbus' civil aircraft division. Despite the aircraft's issues with capacity, limited routes, and high fuel consumption, there are signs of continued interest and potential demand.
Global Airlines, a UK-based airline, plans to utilize second-hand A380s, demonstrating confidence in the aircraft. Production of the A380 ceased with the last delivery to Emirates in December 2021. However, as air travel rebounds post-pandemic, airlines like Lufthansa and Etihad Airways have reintroduced the A380.
Christian Scherer of Airbus stated that while the chance of resuming production is low, it is not impossible. The market currently favors twin-engine jets, making the return of the four-engine A380 unlikely. As of now, 145 A380s remain in active service across ten airlines.
Key issues that led to the cessation of A380 production include its excessive capacity, limited route suitability, and high fuel consumption. However, the emergence of a second-hand market and airlines like Global Airlines show a continuing interest in the aircraft.
Global Airlines aims to start its A380 operations in 2025, signaling potential future demand. Some suggest that advancements in aerodynamics, lighter structures, and newer, quieter engines could address the A380's past issues, making it a viable option once again.
The possibility of an A380neo or a smaller double-decker jet like an A390 has been floated as potential solutions to future air travel demands. Despite the challenges, the A380 remains a favorite among passengers for its comfort and stability, keeping the door slightly ajar for its return.
The a380 is the most comfortable and quiet airliner flying
yep even in economy the experience was not shit , and when your traveling anything that isnt said given shit is greatly desired . Ive always said Id pay $100 more to fly on the a380 over any other plane on long haul , and with inflation probably $200 more
@@chlyon just fly Lufthansa. You'll always get great service and great pilots.
@@NisseOhlsen YMMV. Lufthansa Economy experience for me was terrible. Poor service, inconsiderate staff, plane overstuffed with pax, poor food. I will never fly Lufthansa again. The Lufthansa flight from Frankfurt to Barcelona was also unpleasant with no leg room and seats like rocks to cram in more pax. My experience of the A380 on Malaysian was worlds apart - better - but sadly, Malaysian have given up their A380s.
@@theharper1 sad to hear, I don't fly that much these days, so it must have gotten i rapid decline...
@@NisseOhlsen Haha, one of the shittiest in Europe
Just travelled from Abu Dhabi to London with the A380. What an epic ride, this thing is a beast. Soft and comfortable!
Happy to hear this. The A380 is definitely an aircraft I wanted to fly for the longest, but then the news of the A380 being discontinued during the pandemic was a blow to those chance. Definitely will take a flight on it now!
The A380 is the best aircraft I have ever flown with. Amazing comfort and stability. On longhaul, my aircraft of choice!
I just flew Emirates 380, absolutely wonderful air craft, roomy, quiet, comfortable. Will happily do it gain!
The real benefit of the A380 design was its low noise and short take off so it cleared the area around airports quickly unlike the 747 which took so long to get airborne. Airbus put a lot of research into the A380 which whilst the plane might have been a loss maker, the innovations went into the A350 at little/no cost. And it will be airport congestion that may well lead to the A380 becoming viable. LHR will struggle to get a 3rd runway Changi suffers stacking now and Indian cities are likely to see huge growth in air travel. a 600 seater with first and business class at the same comfort level may well be the answer. And airlines know that folks are happy to pay a premium to fly the A380 which tips the economics.
The A380’s short take off run is due to the fact the wing & engines were set up for the larger -900. So the wings produce a lot more lift at lower speeds on the -800.
However, Airbus approached Boeing years ago about building a NLA - looking a lot like the 380 but Boeing weren’t interested - bet they’re regretting that decision now!
Only reason the 380 never cracked the US market was their failure to look beyond Boeing - a situation that’s now putting US airlines at risk of falling behind counterparts that are happily using much more comfortable fleet. Indeed, why are Delta - the second US airline switching to an all Airbus fleet and even United are taking the 321NX!!
@@leathomas9983 The American Airlines were too engaged with frequent flights at lower capacity on the basis that folks flying LA to NY etc would rather have a choice of times. They also were misguided about the loading times of the A380. Good organisation at the gate, and using all the doors could have seen an A380 in 2 class configurations loading 600 passengers as quickly as a single door 200-250 passenger plane. Though North American passengers insist on not checking bags and overloading overhead bins! And yes, not built here was a totem they carry to their grief. Such a shame because the A380 would have given the public a much better experience and one for airlines to have to reach too, forcing a better experience for everybody.
@@briangriffiths1285 my most enjoyable flight in the US was on an MD11 (sadly they are now retired). There is a place for wide-body jets on domestic routes.
It was nice to BA was the first major airline to commit to flying their full fleet of A380s post pandemic
The 380 is hands down the most comfortably plane i have ever flew (tourist-class). Boeings Dreamliner is not even close.
This I have to agree
even 747 isn’t close
I have ever 'flown'.
I've flown both back to back, this is airline-dependent. Airlines that operate both aircraft outfit both aircraft the same. Makes me think you've never actually been on ether.
@@jhmcd2 What are you talking about?
Yeah! Please bring back A380! Super comfortable & sturdy!
These are by far the best plane for long haul. I went on the Boeing equivalent and nearly had my fillings shaken out, I also had to wear ear plugs all the way due to the high noise level. When I fly on the A380 I fall asleep instantly it’s incredibly quiet and comfortable.
There is something romantic with that plane, the bar, the vast space, the maximum service, just fly in it is enough to tell story
Airbus engineers absolutely nailed this aircraft, its an absolute engineering marvel. Its the best plane ever to fly in! So quiet and comfortable to fly in! Shame production was discontinued.
If I had a dollar for every rumour that circulated in aviation, I'd be a rich man.
In my experience, a380 is the best.
My favourite aircraft A380
Love the A380, flown it many times, it needs to live!
13% lower fuel burn from revised winglets? That’s not right- 1.3% maybe
Nonsense that the 380 will restart production
In the end, it comes down to demand.
Can you imagine all the Suppliers attempting to ramp production back up? Lead time on some forgings are as far out as 2 years. Might be a minimum 5 years to get a first flight. Likely the same amount of time required for an all new design.
@@mrm7058 Absolutely, much can be achieved with throwing a crapload of cash at the problem. Assuming there are hard orders.
Yeah, it ain’t going to happen. It would be like Boeing restarting production of the Stratocruiser.
But something like the A380 (possibly just a neo) probably will
I have to admit that it was the most quiet plane I have ever travelled on. It was also so big it did not even feel like I was on a plane. More like that, I was inside a building!!
I flew business and it was just like lying in my room watching TV. Amazing plane. I also flew economy on Emirates which was not so great in terms of comfort.
I flew with Emirates from Hamburg to Bali via Dubai. Triple broke my ankle there. So my insurance gave me a business class upgrade. Flying in Emirates BC from Denpasar to Dubai on an A380 was my best flight ever.
Don’t forget to mention the hot water Boeing is currently in due to all the problems they’ve been having. They’ve lost a tremendous amount of customer trust because of it
I've seen this pop up on some message boards: "If it's a Boeing, I ain't going!"
ouch.
As a very occasional long haul passenger, I love the A380. So much quieter and more spacious and more comfortable than the 747.
Will cost far more to restart production (i.e resourcing materials, production lines and staffing allocations) than any amount of realistic future sales would ever generate. The report I have seen is from (Airbus, 2024) themselves dismissing they will consider restarting production.
Critique: What "big edge" would an A390 "shorter double decker" have over the A330neo or dhe A350? None that would justify an all-new design.
Especially with Airbus having no spare capacity to develop and later produce this at all.
Makes no sense at all I would think.
For us, studying airplane types is fun, but for Airbus it would cost bilions when they've got good offerings in the 400 seat category already.
More efficient engines for the real A380 are what's needed.
Ohhh stop it click bait, just cause Airbus mentioned the door was not completely closed on production they still said very unlikely. The A380 is back in service mainly due to a shortage or delays in production of new jets.
At least they mean something else with "the door was not completely closed" than Boeing.
I do not believe airbus would risk bringing this giant back into production unless at least 800 to 1000 pcs are in order.... such a beast in the sky....
Had the joy of flying on 380 Manchester to Dubai - real decent economy travel.
Great Aircraft …I will always choose A380 over other aircraft
Been on 4 Emirates 380s 2 months ago. Very comfortable and loved it. Don't think Airbus 380 production line coming back as a few of them have already been scrapped.
Airbus A380, emperor of the skies🥰😍❤️
I love the A380. ❤
everyone loves the A380
Best for comfort and just so smooth.
How much more would you be prepared to pay for a seat on the A380 compared tp the nasty cramped alternatives being used on long haul routes today? $200 per seat might pay for the half the fuel.
@@imagseer Im so sorry. I don't understand your question. If English isn't your first language, then post your initial reply in your native

Absolutely misleading
No way will Airbus start production of the 380 again.
The space used for manufacturing of the 380 is now being used for production of other models.
same can be said for his "reporting??" on Global Airlines. We'll be lucky to see that fly even a few charters the way Hi Fly did. He makes it sound like they offered scheduled service. It filled in for Norwegian a few times.
I don't think the A380 ever made a penny of profit. Doesn't matter how popular it is now, the prospect of ever making a profit is virtually zero.
I'm pretty sure I read somewhere it didn't make a profit, but can't find the info. As much as people like the plane, it was still a failure for airbus and the companies that purchased it, with the exception of emirates, which based its operations in a hub model.
The 747 was designed from day 1 to be converted to a freighter when it reached middle age and finished flying passengers. The A380 was never designed with that conversion in mind and even if you did convert one, you would have lots of empty cargo space left after you fill it with what it could carry. It also needs different gates and wider taxiways, so you just cant point it at any airport with a long runway. The production line is also closed and in use for other airbus products. For whatever reason Airbus chose to build a passenger only A380 and once it has done that it is game over. They wont build anymore because there is no market for them.
It is like flying in a cathedral.
A380 is an epic aircraft! Would be very exciting if they came back!
Best airplane I fly with ❤
I flew from Frankfurt to New York and back on this beauty! I did not feel one shake or turbulence.
I love the A380.
Me too! In case Airbus A380 don't return. My most Favorite plane of all time is A350! Seen many airlines operating the A350. You can't believe Lufthansa became the 10th A350 operator back in 2017!
I will soon fly a380 from dubai to auckland.
First time a380 for me. And also the longt a380 flight. 16h.
I am excited.
I just flew on an A380 last week for the first time and it’s the smoothest, stable and quietest plane I have ever flown on. As much as I love the 747 it was a superior experience on the A380.
its also 30-40 years newer tech.. it better be
Click bait. Trust me Airbus will NOT build anymore A380s because the JLL FAL has been converted for A320s and partially the A350.
Thats right. Airbus has huge problems dealing with demand now and the whole A380 manufacturing facilities have been turned over to other aircraft. And it's only Emerites who were slightly interested in a new A380 anyway.
this guy also has no clue about cockpit commonality between all the airbus planes that came since A320
@@k9killer221 The way I see it is that Boeing have only more chance. They have managed, by the skin of their teeth, been able to worm their way out of real US Government wrath one more time, but I doubt very much that it will happen again. The 'too big to fail' is not a guarantee of success and yet another major scandal pertaining to safety from Boeing and airliners all around the world are going to shun them in droves. So far, there have been under the breath grumblings and mumblings but not much more. The long and the short is that demand for Airbus would in that scenario be astronomical and just because they have converted current manufacturing facilities to other aircraft production, it doesn't mean that they cannot convert them back if they feel it economically viable. They could even build new facilities elsewhere and it is worth noting that Airbus, unlike Boeing, is a cross-border collaborative enterprise. That makes them more nimble and flexible than the corrupt American Boeing.
A380 is my preferred option, it's just more specious than other air crafts on long hauls.
The most beautiful aircraft and so quiet and comfortable.
Flown on A380's of Singapore Airlines, British Airways, Air France, Qatar Airlines, Qantas, and Malaysia Airlines, love them, built the Engines and worked on them at Airbus in Toulouse, bring them back in production please
Global airlines!!! i would not hold my breath !!!
Airbus can definitley not build AnymoreA380's as all the facilities have been converted for A320/ A321 production.
The best aircraft ever made. Tragically, it was both too late and too early for the required demand. Too late for hub and spinner and too early for the capacity constraints of pilot shortages and on trans-Eurasian routes.
If we flying geeks could decide all aircrafts would be A380's or a new B747 but thats not going to happened. Selling 100 aircrafts is nothing compared to the thousands of orders both Boeing and Airbus have on other "next gen" aircrafts. A380 gives other challenges on support and maintenance, you can't just park this beast in any hangar, you can't even land it everywhere or reach any gate.
I think finding facilities for assembly can be done but you would need a quite large order book to even consider this. I would also like to see a new double decker but dont think its going to happen.
yes yes A380 the best
Production is essentially impossible because the production line is removed and it's machinery destroyed. There may be a refitt if interest is high but that's about it. A new double decker would be unlikely to have a chance because while airlines are begging for planes, the 380 volume class is not one of them.
You don't need music in the background while you are talking!
The A380 has no production line available.
Looking at probably a couple YEARS at least to get the supply chains back in operation AND get an assembly line for it built.
I love the a380, it's the best plane I've ever flown on but let's be serious, Airbus aren't going to restart production, ever.
No. But Emirates would absolutely love a NEO version though.
Please bring the king back… we love him ❤❤❤❤
I traveled on the 747 and A380 and found the A380 much more quieter and a better flight
I would say that the passengers are obsessed by this plane.
Agreed. Airlines not so much.
Unfortunately, I highly doubt it. There are about 5000 airlines in the world. I believe only 16 purchased it, and pretty much one airline owns most of them. Things need to change a lot for this to happen.
Uhm and those 16 airlines own over 65% of the non American market
No the A 380 will not come back, its build facility has been reworked for Airbus A 320 which are much in demand, and the cost of restarting production would be prohibitive : Supplier lead times are very long. Further a neo version would have to replace the current variant which would be hugely costly.
Well, if airlines decide they want A380's, they don't need to restart production, there are many of them in deep storage. Over a hundred last time I looked. Hence this story is nonsense.
Down to only around 30 in storage now, many reactivated.
Very interesting. It would be interesting to find out if they have all of the A380 Jigs.
I worked on the wing design team on the A380 in the early 2000s
Jigs are scraped…. So no chance..
Re. the re-introduction of the A380, you're making this up as you go. Entertaining though
Loved the Emirates flight to Japan with A380
A useful update. We used Emirates and the A380 on March/April 2024 for our journey from UK-DXB-AKL, home from CHC-SYD and MEL-DXB-UK. Also 7:15 around 250 aircraft were built - we flew on the last one during one of the flights in March/April
Flown with them on emirates in both business and economy. Enjoyable experience.
I think there is demand but its the supply side which doesnt make sense. They would have to reconstitute assembly lines to restart production possibly replacing scrapped jigs which would be very costly and it would still be a 20 year old design. They could update it with advances from the A350 and A320 NEO bringing composites into the fuselage, different wing design and the upcoming generation of engines but they would still have to recertify it like a brand new aircraft, not even a minor stretch which again would be extremely costly for a limited number of orders. Finally the airports issue, not a huge number of airports went through the cost of redesigning their apron and gate operations to support its vast size, if you built an even larger aircraft you would have to go through that process again. On the plus side there is a lot of spare lift capacity built into the A380 wings meaning you could stretch the fuselage slightly without requiring wing changes or build a substantially shorter fuselage with the same wings and fit only twin engines (Though could lose some cruising speed).
Good news for an Europen project
Lufthansa wants the Jumbo Jet 747, not the A380.
I’ve been fortunate enough to travel on the A380 on a regular basis. Amazing aircraft
On the other hand, I've been on a transcontinental trip lately (Munich - Detroit - Seattle - Paris - Munich), and I have not seen a single four-engine passenger jet, only some in freight livery.
Depends on schedules, just because you didn't see any doesnt mean they dont fly there!
If Emirates wants the A380 so bad they can put their money where their mouth is, by building a line in the Emirates somewhere. This airbus satellite could "install plugs" in existing frames on the A380 and reengine them and other improvements. If enough demand exists, they could new build A380s in the UAE.
Emirates A380 still the ultimate for commercial air travel!
Considering the A380 FAL has been converted to A320 production, new-builds are not going to be an option.
The 777X finally has FAA TIA so it can now actually be certified and start deliveries within 12-18 months.
But I think Airbus always had an eye that the former A380 production line might be converted back to A380 production in the longer term, especially now with international air travel growing again.
Also the A380 program failed catastrofic and gave Airbus a huge financial loss.
Airbus like Boeing has problems enough to revisit old projects (A380, B757)
Spirit who makes parts and fuselages for both is a serious headache.
The A220 program is still not profitable and every unit is sold with a loss.
A severe shortage of skilled aircraft builders, engineers.
The next generation of aircraft engines/ renewable fuels f.e. the unducted turbo fan 2.0 is in the testfase.
So no "old" airliners are being developed onlu upgrades and later with the new engines new fuselages.
@@Sacto1654 Its like an older model car, when the specific tooling is changed to another model its insane expensive to retool back the entire assembly line.
Most people don't know that setting up a production line and constructing special tooling is one of the most expensive parts
The chances that Hell freezes over is bigger then new A380's roll of the production line again
A380 failed to modernise because of the unique engine provider and the hand of USA over, do you think really that UK (RR) with the hand of the USA allow developping new engines ???
A380 is dead, for ever, let's work on a new air plane concept ... better use of the money
Trouble with 777x is that it’s not big enough. Airlines that are filling A380s today would take a revenue cut replacing them with 777x. The demand for an eventual or even near term A380-like aircraft is definitely there, hence all the refurbs going on.
A large plane and the pressure on staff at airports for quick return around on these aircraft , can take its toll on the staff involved.
It will never come back once the reality of cost sets in.
They view different, our view different...
Should be plenty of spare A380 around to fill needs!
They will need 100's of orders!
With a reskin of modern composite, and as a RR ultra fan twinjet. Yes I could see this as a winner.
Like many commented, my fav aircraft ever. I was shoked when I flew to Dubai by the number of A380 Emirates has.
Glad if the airbus A380 can make a come back.
It has lots to offer..
New engines coming out soon can power the new aircraft and can make make the Airbus A380 more emotional.
RR are developing the Ultra Fan. But can't really see Airbus building such an aircraft. Great proposal though.
Airbus cut the whole supply line for the A380 and the facility for assembly is now used for A320s.
There is noway the will restart the production.
Talk or play crappy music but not both at same time. STOP IT.
Emirates save the A380
Wow, there is a lot of false and bad information in this video. There are 10 airlines in the world that fly the A380, and none of them are bigger us airlines. If not one US airline wants anything to do with the A380 how can you say that airlines are “obsessed“ with this plane? On top of that airlines that do fly, the A380 aren’t all in love with it, for example Qatar airways Akbar Al-Baka said the A380 was their biggest mistake. Emirates is the only airline I know of that has been asking and wanting for a new version of the A380
Comeback, it never went away, not as far as BA, Lufthansa,Emirates,Qantas,Etihad , ANA etc are concerned. I doubt the production will start up again, there are enough in storage to fill demand. Weigh the time to restart manufacture and produce an airframe, versus recommissioning one from storage, airlines will probably prefer the latter to get an airliner into revenue earning service. Another consideration is that ALL these airframes are owned by banks / leasing companies!
Took Business Class upper deck on BA…DFW-LHR-DFW last year, LAX-LHR-LAX this year…love the plane, service, cabin crew…
I understand why airlines don't want to operate this aircraft. It's very inefficient, and it's very slow. There's definitely a need right now for a big aircraft that can carry alot of people with a really low operating cost. If Airbus can redesign it to make it more efficient like the a350 that would be awesome
Clickbait. Airbus is not going to restart production of the A380. The former A380 FAL at Jean-Luc Lagardère - Toulouse has switched to making A320s last year. There is no capacity at Hambourg to produce a A380.
After the critique ("A390 shorter double decker as described will not be built"):
An A380-neo, though not around the corner, might become interesting for Asian customers. Just look at the masses of people, the new Asian middle class, that will want to fly! India & Co will see a rapidly growing demand for passenger seats like you wouldn't believe - long haul, short haul, everywhere!
A380 to the fore! Every existing A380 airframe will be worth its weight in gold (... not quite ...) and airlines may be craving for more A380 sized planes than do exist....
”nobody wants to sit in economy for so long flights”
I don’t agree. Price is important, I rather spend my money at the destination. Also it’s likewise boring no matter how much you paid for the ticket. I would pay more to have a standing seat for start & landing while having an onboard bar.
If the A380 made such a massive comeback, do you think the passenger 747 might come back too, depsite the existence of the 777X ? And particularly the 747-8.
Of Course!
The 747 had lived a really long life bowing is ready to move on with the 777x and regardless with the situation they are in it would be a bold move to bring back production of the 747
@@Shyobe But what if airlines want the 747 again, just like the A380 ?
@@ChristIsKing4ever-l9w that’s what if
@@ChristIsKing4ever-l9wUnlike 747, probably No Airlines would want A380. If Emirates does not want its new A380 because of its Boeing 777X, then Airbus will not reinstate its programme and would focus on other twinjets like the A350 and A320Neo family
I cannot see any more A380's being made although I hope that all of the planes mothballed will fly again soon. Just read the comments and you will see that the A380 is by far the most comfortable and silent aircraft and customers love it. I will only fly a route that uses the A380.
Split the difference and do tri engine
I was lucky enough to do two trips in the A380 in May, in Biz class. Emirates. Oh my word. Fantastic, I wish I could afford to fly it every week.
One thing to remember: when the airline market had this massive resurgence in passengers, almost every airline that had an A380 had to rush to their storage facilities to bring them back into service. They were not all prepped and on standby on the tarmac. British Airways brought theirs to my airport (DFW) several times. It draws crowds so the airport security have to run out and push people back. I don't get why they want to be so close to the runway. People are nuts, LOL. Those Rolls-Royce engines put out 280,000 lbs of thrust altogether! I wouldn't want to be within 500' of that thing when it lands!
PS: I'm surprised to hear about Korean Air. I never knew they owned one!
Nah the A380 lines were converted into other planes lines. Airbus is all in with the A350 but can't satisfy all the huge demand at the moment. This is why the A380 is making a come back.
