Welcome to the sixth episode of the Real-World Business Switch Network Build! One of the biggest challenges when folks get started with managing network switches is determining how to get connected and get in to the configuration. Today's episode is all about how to understand and configure real-world switch management interfaces. This includes...
Understanding what a console port or management interface is
Three different styles of management interfaces
    - ‪@CiscoSystems‬ , ‪@UbiquitiInc‬ and HP switch examples
A practical exercise to test your knowledge of this episode!
In this series, we continue where we left off in my 'Real-World Cabling' series, and continue on to building and installing a business switch network.

Luckily Cisco is finally moving to using USB mini for console access. all those USB mini cables will come in handy when configuring the new cisco enterprise equipment. I suspect, like all technology, this will trickle down over time into their complete line of devices.

Great micro nugget... I have a question for you: can you create a video with the process of configuring a ProCurve switch from zero?
We have some of that switches here, and some people told me that they can be configured like Aruba ones, but sadly I don't remember how to setup an Aruba... I will appreciate your help.
    Kind regards.

These videos are surely a stepping stone for student like me who has just started networking career. I got chance in Networking career by chance but I decided to stay in networking only due to the curiosity which you created and your training to make me confident. Thank you so much and If I ever achieve something in this field, its only due to your hand holding and your training sessions

@Douglas Njoku it's bogus. Just portrays and begins as if it's getting hacked. But it's just fake. Finally it displays that it has got the password and asks you to pay $8.
Also, one who is curious.. please open such websites in VM

This video fails for not showing a full picture of how it's all laid out. (The laptop plugged into the switch)

Super. This was a pretty great orientation to what I was struggling to understand.
Now, in the case of the enterprise gear with the Ethernet-type console port, why wouldn’t you just get one USB to Ethernet cable?

    • @peenweinerstein9968
      @peenweinerstein9968 2 роки тому +1

Because it’s not an Ethernet port… it’s a serial port using an rj45 connector. The rollover cables are intended to be used in these ports, either going to a DB9, or USB adapter (both serial)

Hi Jeremy, will you teach us how to access the switch through serial in windows, linux and mac?

    • @tonyoik1012

Apart from (potentially) different cables (in the case of a macbook), the end process will be the same as far as I know. Telnet and SSH are CLIs, which pretty much look like Linux command line, and GUIs are self explanatory, as you will have separate windows and tabs to see what you need to do. In any case, once the first time connection and configuration has been completed (usually with a console cable and stuff), subsequent accesses and connections will be established through the internet, in which case you will either connect to the Telnet/SSH client with an IP, or to the GUI , by typing the switch's IP into your browser (the same way you access your home router).
