Dutch expression for drinking coffee as a consolation or for comfort when you're feeling down, bitter, tired or less pleased than you usually are: "Ik ga een bakkie troost nemen", literally meaning "I'm gonna have myself a cuppa consolation".
Generally people in Netherlands, Belgium, France... don't use all those sweet flavoured creamers. My BFF that's from the US and lives here in Belgium was bummed out in the beginning that she lived here that she couldn't find any flavoured creamers. But now she's gotten used to pure coffee that isn't overly sweet. Here in Belgium most people who drink lots of coffee per day usually make pretty weak coffee. And we mostly drink Arabica that is smooth. I only drink coffee once in a while when i go eat breakfast with my dad or go shopping with a friend. I like my coffee superstrong with just a little milk.
I didn't know hazelnut creamer was a thing. I don't add sugar but I add hazelnut syrup, it's kind of the consistency of honey but the flavor isn't that overpowering
I worked at the Douwe Egberts coffee factory for a while. Each hour I had a 15-minute coffee break, so that's two whole hours in total, plus a half-hour meal break. I could drink as many free cups of coffee as I wanted. When I left that job, I quit drinking coffee FOREVER!
because of the thee and coffee business in the past we the Dutch drink it allot . I always drink it when I went to work to stay awake or be awake after long hours the a coffee just gives u a big boost also because of the weather when its rainy or cold instead of warm Choco people take the coffee more regular. Also we have our own special ESE Coffee pads from Douwe Egberst and it is what u already said an nice silky Coffee most popular coffee in the Netherlands it has a lot of different variations like Mokka, vanilla, Choco etc.
2:30 I use a mug about that size, 3 is what I drink in the morning. With instant coffee it will be constantly filled throughout the day, if I have actual coffee (no it is not the same thing and I will die on that hill if so needed) it might be between 9 and 12 mugs depending on what I am doing. "Nobody mentions hazelnut creamer" ... well duh... this is the Netherlands, not America where everything needs extra flavors or wetted nutdust. I won't say nobody uses that stuff but if people do they tend to fall into certain groups like Vegetarians/Vegans and the "tiktok/influencer generation" and of course those that are lactose intolerant. Remember the Dutch Motto " Act normal and you will act crazy enough". From the older generations (probably most millenials down to Boomers) most will stick with the normal dairy creamer if they add milk to their coffee. Thinks like hazelnut and oatmilk are simply not a thing yet here. It is on the rise but compared to just normal milk/creamer it is hardly a dimple next to a mountain. Tea mixed with coffee? Sir... I would keep that to yourself if you want entry permission to the Netherlands...... I mean.... wtaf.
Big coffee drinking culture over here. The term "op de koffie komen" means visiting someone - but it literally translates to coming on/to "the coffee" - like the coffee was an event that was happening anyway (and coffee was happening, tbf) The older the people are, the more they seem to drink. Boomers especially will drink from morning to night.
It's now 10:29 PM Thursday evening, It is quite a coincidence that I am now also having coffee, a nice cup of cappuccino I made myself with 3 sweeteners in it, I like to drink coffee with milk in it, my stomach can tolerate this better than black coffee like I drank it before.
For me it's my gall bladder 😅 I used to drink my coffee black, no sugar. Now I need to put milk or creamer in it. Don't really like it, so I also add sugar and then it tastes fine. Still miss my black no sugar coffee though 🤗
I live in Perú (I'm Dutch) and once I invited a local friend for a coffee and I made it Dutch style... in 5 minutes the guy ran to the toilet hehe. I drink coffee all day long (at least 6 mugs) and I love it strong. But I'm planning to quit drinking coffee soon, because coffee has too much influence on my nerves.
Sorry that i have to say this, my partner visited the US many times and the coffee had little taste , just like dishwater. We mainly drink Douwe Egberts coffee and Nespresso at home. It is much stronger and tastes like real coffee.
When i wake up the first thing is Coffee. And now im watching your video at 23.55 so alot of coffee at a day . And im not going to bed yet . I gues about 15 cups a day 😅 i drink my coffee black. And strong
Hi Charlie, I start my day with espresso, hot and super strong no sugar and no milk added. My espresso machine grinds the beans for every separate cup and here you got numbers on the coffee package that will tell how strong the flavor is. Most times I have 9 up to 12, and that's a lot of coffee flavor 😂
I used to drink coffee all day every day with milk and sugar. I started to let out the sugar because i drank so much coffee, so also a lot of suger 😉. Nowadays i drink about 3 or 4 cups only with milk. At work Douwe Egberts, at home Dolge Gusto 👌🏼
Charlie, only a few countries in the world can make a decent cup of coffee. Whenever i am abroad i will spend most mornings finding Italians or Turks to get a proper "cup" of coffee.
I only drink one cup of coffee in the morning and one mug of tea in the afternoon. Rarely one extra mug of tea in the evening... XD Both coffee and tea I drink with just one sugar, no milk or anything else.
im a mecanich in The Netherlands, and the only way i was allpwed to drink koffie in the work shop was black or no koffie. they always sayd if you dont like koffie dont drink it. it did work tho. im still drinking koffie to this day🤣
At home I usually drink coffee with a bit of fresh milk, mornings when getting up about half a liter and after dinner like half a liter as well. At work if I have a little afternoon dip I'll have a cup of coffee there as well. I'm from the Netherlands and both a social coffee drinker but also because I need or crave for some caffeine specially in the mornings to get me going.
While working, I'll drink about 6 to 8 cups a day, in the evening only one, after diner. But I had days I drunk about 12 cups ore more. But to be honest, the coffee I drunk nowadays is fresh, never instant. Charlie, instant coffee.... uugghh... that is not coffee! We now have a machine thats grinds the coffee and makes it as strong as we want. No, not the coffee beans you'll buy at the supermarket, but a better one (we order online). We (my wife and me) like strong coffee with a good taste. In the video one men said thatv Dutch drink mostly cappuccino... that is not correct. We sometimes do, but at home, only the real coffee! BTW, Douwe Egberts has different variaties in coffee, so I don't know which one you had, but their coffee is oke.
Ah in front of Utrecht Central Station a small part our working area as I work for the city of Utrecht. Cafeine is the most used drug in the world. Yes a drug because that is what cafeine basically is. It does not give you energy. Only the sugar in it, if you drink it with sugar this will give you some energy as the glycemic index of coffee itself is 0. Cafeine binds itself at the receptors in your brain that let you feel tired. If you get up and need coffee it is your brain telling you this because most people of in fact overtired. You can kick this habbit but it will take you some weeks before youre completely off the cafeine dependency. And once youre no longer dependent on it you will wake up feeling how you should feel fresh and fit or tired because youre still tired. Having this said Im also back on cafeine again due to irregular shifts at work including night shift. I cant deny the social aspect of drinking coffee with people. But Im planning to try to stop again because study shows that people that are addicted to coffee perform less that none cafeine addicts in many different subjects. It was an English Univeristy that did this study but I dont recall which one.
No we are simple folks.. we dont drink our coffee as fancy as american do.. I like my coffee black, and i love the stronge the better... especially with good bean, so it doent have the sour after tast
I drink a lot of coffee i guess, pretty much a cup every 1.5 hour from the moment i wake up till the moment i go to bed, i guess i might be a bit too well used to caffeine because it has no impact on my sleep at all, but it does still sorta help waking up in the morning hehehe.
Sorry Charlie, but with instant coffee you are not drinking coffee that stuff tastes disgusting for everyone who loves good coffee. My favorite is "Schümli" swiss café crema mild roast (two beans) ad a bit of 3.5% milk and it´s perfect, but also delicous without milk. The swiss really know what excellent coffee is just like the turks, what they call coffee you´re going to drop a ball and your jaw when you drink it the firt time.
incorrect. Every study puts the Netherlands in 5th place and Belgium in 8th. Finland, Norway, Iceland and Sweden make the top 4. Netherlands 5th with 8.4kg/year/person, Belgium 8th with 6.8kg/year/person

Yeah a good wording for it 👍"lekker een bak leut" hehehe
Works surprisingly well as an English expression too
what ?? i just drink it because i like it .... bakkie troost ..nooit van gehoord ! lekker bakkie doen hoor ik elke dag .
Nice translation of the unique Dutch word "gezelligheid": sociability
Dear charlie i am glad that you are a american who wants to learn and wants to see the world outside of the us ps i am dutch

Honey works better in tea imo 🤗

Hey Charlie, if you drink instant coffee, try Nescafé Gold. It's strong but dilicious and keeps you awake.
OK if I see it at the end store I will try it, I've had that brand before but not that specific option
