    My 93 year old mom was reminiscing yesterday about riding this train from LA to Chicago and on to Philadelphia when she was under ten. She used recounted loving the "choo choo choo" sound, and how her mom told her one year that there would be no more "choo choo choo" sounds because of the introduction of the streamliner. So great to have this video the day after hearing her story.

    Interesting mix of F3's,and FT's in passenger service,and throw in,the 3750's,and other passenger engines,real nice mix!! Note,the engineers on the Santa Fe,had a super touch on the throttles,as you literally could not tell when you were moving! Had that experience,on the Super Chief,pre-Amtrak!! Thank you for your diligence and persistence!! 😇!

    I believe the first two sequences capture the arrival of Train #19, the all-Pullman "Chief," which had been streamlined in 1938 but which was not Dieselized until 1947. At this time the Chief arrived early in the morning, rather than late in the evening as it did during the 1960s. Also, the train full of Navy personnel is utilizing unpowered interurban cars, leased from the US Maritime Commission (though lettered for Santa Fe), and used to transport service personnel to and from San Diego or Camp Pendleton.

      That is correct I believe. This footage is phenomenal for those of us modelling the train. Of particular interest to me is the placement in 2 separate locations of the consist of the pool service Pullmans. Other pictures i have have these as a single cut of 3.

      "For profit"? Back in the days when travel on railroads was popular....before airlines?

    A lot of fun watching the old Santa Fe passenger trains. Santa Fe would not allow Amtrak to use the Super Chief name because they did not trust them to maintain the high standard of service. I understand that the Hollywood elite used to get off the train at the Pasadena station to avoid crowds of fans and others. They would then be driven to their homes from Pasadena. The station is still there but is now a restaurant. The Santa Fe right of way is now a light rail commuter line that goes through Union Station in Los Angeles.

    Wonderful video & I really like the scoring! It's interesting to see the switches on 6 & 7, that lead into the escape track, are staggered. I had them even with each other on my layout & they emptied into a "Y" switch. Oh well! That area of the train layout was the ex's & she's been gone 3 years. So it was remodeled into a steel mill in Chicago. Regards & keep 'em rollin'!

      The ex-Southern Pacific suburban electric cars were "trailers", with no motors or control systems. Many of the powered cars did go to Pacific Electric, who bought them from the Maritime Commission (long story) after the war, refurbished them and used them until the last Red Cars ran in 1961. The trailers that ran on the Santa Fe were probably scrapped in the late 1940s.

    On my only visit to LA rode Amtrak in and out of LAUPT a couple of times. Walked the platforms, station and took tons of photos. Drove my wife and kids crazy 🤪 but they put up with it.

    0:49 and 1:09 A pair of cars possibly running through from another (Eastern) railroad, or more likely (in my opinion) "borrowed" from another line to meet service requirements. The second car's name, "Salt River Valley", supports the latter. Given this is shot in black-and-white can't see the actual color scheme: Any experts out there who recognize the car name and, hence, the line to which Pullman originally assigned it?

    • @blackwatchaudio5630
      @blackwatchaudio5630 2 роки тому +2

      Thought the same about through cars from the east, but the scheme doesn't match NYC or PRR, so probably assigned from the Pullman fleet. Maybe Illinois Central, not sure.

      Did a search on the web and the Salt River Valley was built in 1942 for the AT&SF. Originally painted in a two-tone grey scheme, they were later given a silver-shadow paint job in order to blend in better with the stainless-steel cars.

    • @michaela.chmieloski3196

      @@SpeedGraphicFilmVideo Your web searching is better than mine, Speed Graphic. I tried several different prime-word combinations and drew complete blanks each time. Two-tone grey for the Santa Fe? I always think olive green during the steam era or stainless steel mated with Warbonnet Diesel-electrics. That's what I get for not paying more attention to the AT&SF, one of this nation's truly great railways. Now the car's name makes perfect sense given Salt River Valley's location in Arizona. Well done, Speed Graphic, both the video and the research.

      @@blackwatchaudio5630 The Central is what immediately popped into my mind, as well, but the shading in the black-and-white film didn't fit, it was reversed.
