This is my AOTY right now. But I also like literally all Katatonia albums so that shouldn't be too surprising for me. I say that it's the most I enjoyed Katatonia's record since Dead End Kings, which was lowkey my favourite record from them
Still haven't heard it yet but i'm confident that it'll leave a lasting impression on me. I love all the Katatonia albums. There's times i feel nostalgic for their Doom phase but i understand their need to evolve and search new sounds. And that evolution gave us Last Fair Deal Gone Down, my favorite album from them.
Really digging this record, more so than City Burials IMO. I find it more consistent, more concise, and more emotional. Jonas still has one of my favorite singing voices in metal music. Listening to this record while driving at night felt pretty special. I enjoyed hearing your thoughts on this record as well haha :)
Welp honestly as someone whose had a hard time getting into them... I needed this! 4/5 leaning towards a 4.5/5! They heard the last couple Soen albums and the latest Tool and Porcupine Tree releases and said let's do that on top of what we did with our previous works and boom there ya go!
Speaking of melancholic. Speaking of Doom. Tribunal and their debut: The Weight of Remembrance is an underground record with a lot going for it. I would highly recommend you check it out!
Dude, seriously good and well articulated summation of this album, along with how they have made their way here. Great review and nice work. You're right, Birds is absolutely bombastic in all the right ways, but yes, a little more extreme "pepper" would not have hurt the album. Still, love being "invited into Katatonia's world"...!
I've been listening to this all weekend, and for me its easily a 4/5. I need to live with it longer to see where it sits in their discography, but I'm pretty confident it'll be in the top 5 for me...I'm surprised nobody has picked up on how the main riff in Birds is pure Paradise Lost worship!..Not that im complaing lol,cos its one of my favourites on the whole record!...Nice review again mate, glad you dug it.
I started with the Great Cold Distance at a time I was in more extreme stuff. And loved that album. Checked out their more extreme early stuff. Didn't like it so I am happy they didn't went back that way but if they would do it now it would probably a lot better. And this album is once again a solid one. But still... going a bit extreme.... I am curious about how it would sound tho.
I think those death/doom vibes would work really well with the current sound and the production of "Sky Void Of Stars". But, cest la vie, I understand if Katatonia doesn't wanna go down that road.
@@themetalmeltdownofficial It’s also because Jonas damaged his voice in the past. That is the reason why Mikael Akerfeldt from Opeth did the growls on Brave Murder Day.
Great review, definitely better than City Burials. Part of me wishes they’d go more proggy again like FoH but still a great release. Nit: 2:42 I think you said Johan accidentally
Just listened to it today, I agree it sounded like a best of katatonia compilation but not in any way that felt repetitive or uninspired it is trim to the bone with everything you could want I don’t. Hear this band talked about hardly at all and as a supporter of the group 3.5 to 4 out 5 I 100% agree with its a damn good record to kick off the year
I heard this new record yesterday, and upon my first listen, I liked it! It’s like a combination of the electronic influences from City Burials with the metal influence from the older albums. The only problem with this band is that I often forget they exist, so when I do year end videos I always forget that they released an album whatever year I am doing it on. The same thing happened with the Portuguese black metal band Gaerea and their album from last year.
Katatonia is a great band, Anders has another amazing band it's an avant garde black metal band called Diabolical Masquerade. I listen to both bands a lot also keep up the good work.
I’m gonna have to listen to the rest of their albums cause I was surprised at how much I liked this as a first time listener. It almost kinda reminded me of Dark Tranquillity’s Construct which I enjoyed. I’d give this a 4/5 honestly.
Honestly Katatonia is a band that has never really disappointed me. They definitely have some albums or eras (Would love for them to incorporate more elements from albums like Dance of December Souls or Brave Murder Day, love those records I agree with you there)I prefer over others and some albums. Think even the weakest album is pretty solid, and some of their best albums are some of the best music I’ve heard. Sky Void of Stars proving again why Katatonia are one of my favorite bands 4/5.
This album is beautiful, definitely my favourite album of the year so far, of course that is very much likely going to change. It's such a nice listen, better than City Burials (though I loved that one too). Not as good as The Fall of Hearts IMO but an amazing album, Katatonia don't really miss.
I feel this is one of the weaker Kataonia albums of recent times. I haven’t been able to get past the first few tracks. Maybe I will like it more next week. I’m still listening to Obituary often.. must be in a death mindset.

My score is 100/10. But I have loved all their albums since da fukin 2006 :)
I love the album, I'd give it a solid 4/5! I believe the more time we get with it, the better it will be

I love Katatonia. One of my ten favourite bands. I think this has the potential of being my favourite album of theirs ever.

Great review! I’ve only heard the 4 singles so far .. good stuff!
The fall of Hearts is one of my all time fav albums
This album was absolutely fucking on point...my favorite of theirs since great cold distance
Great review, this album finds me in a mood for Katatonia - don't know if that's the reason why I feel that 's their best since 2009
Imo the Fall of Hearts is excellent as well.
I've been listening to this all weekend, and for me its easily a 4/5.

I'd be down for more prog stuff, "The Fall Of Hearts" was such a great album
Birds is a banger! My favorite Katatonia song in years.
I love this album........🤘🎸🤘
Was thoroughly impressed with this one. Super strong record.
Just listened to it today, I agree it sounded like a best of katatonia compilation but not in any way that felt repetitive or uninspired it is trim to the bone with everything you could want I don’t. I kinda feel that. That new Gaerea album really was fantastic.
I love the reprisal chorus's - makes it catchy
Great review never heard of the band I'll have to check them out
Start with their album The Great Cold Distance (10th Anniversary edition). Then work your way to their other albums.
New album is fantastic for me. Wait for next week live gig here in Budapest, Hungary!
4/5 i just heard it this morning and it never disappointed me
I absolutely adore this record, there's a pretty decent chance this ends up in my Top 10 come December, but only time shall tell...
Waaaaay too early to say that, but we'll see.
Katatonia is a great band, Anders has another amazing band it's an avant garde black metal band called Diabolical Masquerade. I listen to both bands a lot also keep up the good work.
Yoooo I haven't thought about them in a while. Need to check them out again.
I’m gonna have to listen to the rest of their albums cause I was surprised at how much I liked this as a first time listener. It almost kinda reminded me of Dark Tranquillity’s Construct which I enjoyed. I’d give this a 4/5 honestly.

The songs now are so much complex and have much more depth than those first albums which seem rather mudane in comparison, IMO
Robert! I love the Nails shirt, homie!

Interesting album
And thus we continue “Silly Goofy Doomy Boy Month”.
Finally, silly goofy doomy boy month.
You should review Re-Buried's album Repulsive Nature next
Honestly an album like that would get more attention in an ALBUMS I MISSED video as opposed to a full album review.
Too modern.... But Tribunal nailed it. Listen to Tribunal 😀
That Tribunal album do be really really good
BOOYA! 😂
It's good by Katatonia sounds kinda samey for the past few records.
Considering this band have never released a bad album . . .
This album is good, but not as good as the new Riverside album that was released on the same day. Love both bands though.
new Riverside is solid
I need to listen to it thanks dude for reminding me i just listened to Katatonia Ahab and Twilight Force
I feel this is one of the weaker Kataonia albums of recent times. I haven’t been able to get past the first few tracks. Maybe I will like it more next week. I’m still listening to Obituary often.. must be in a death mindset.
@OgiMetalHead I haven’t really gone back to it. Will give it another shot.
City Burials was a complete dud!
I really want to see what everyone else is seeing here. This one was a colossal bore for me and this band is starting to show their age big time.
You are DEFINITELY in the minority on that bud lmao
