Vodafone Idea said late adoption of the fifth-generation or 5G will help it deploy the technology cost-efficiently. Vi, the country’s third-largest telco, said in its latest investor presentation filed on the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE). Vi added that it has completed its 5G minimum rollout obligation (MRO) in four circles with four vendors.
Vi said 90% of its TDD (time division duplex) radios are 5G-ready while all the new basebands are 5G-capable. “For 5G, the target (is) to cover 40% of revenues in the first 24 to 30 months,” Vi said in the investor presentation. This implies the telco will target 5G coverage in roughly the top 100 cities/towns that generate 40% of Vi’s current revenues, a company spokeswoman said. The joint venture between Aditya Birla Group and UK’s Vodafone Group Plc is the only telco that has yet to launch its latest generation network commercially.
As per the presentation, Vi has deployed new roadmap architectures of virtualised Radio Access Network (vRAN), and Open Radio Access Network (Open RAN), and has tested the Vi AirFiber home broadband solution with multiple partners.
“Pan-India 5G NSA capable Core network deployed to handle high throughput enhanced mobile broadband, data, voice, and enterprise services,” the telco said in its presentation.
Vi said it has sufficient spectrum to support migrating the entire 4G subscriber base to a 5G network.
