Both Sonic and Amy have grown up and matured over the years. Amy never faltered with her infatuation with Sonic, but finally realized she needed to respect him and like him first. Sonic, being the older of the two, finally noticed Amy's perseverance and growth, seeing her as less of an annoyance and more of an actual person who has more in common with him than he previously thought. I can totally see a real relationship blossom between these two in actual Sonic canon.
