Stunning Elegance: Off-Centered Turned Wood Earrings

- You can view my other turnings here: www.youtube.co.... I did a live demo a few weeks ago for worldwidewoodturners.org. I recorded my side of the demo so that I could share it with my viewers. In this video I will also take two of the items I demonstrated to completion. I used a simple to make DIY eccentric chuck for these turnings. This chuck was inspired by Mr. Jim Duxbury. I turned one of the pieces into a pendant and the other into a set of "nearly" matching earrings. I think they came out great! The pendant was stained with Rustoleum Coral and Vintage Aqua stains and finished with semi-gloss spar urethane. The earrings were finished with gloss water based poly. The earrings are roughly 1 3/4" tall by 3/4" wide.
Materials:
- Wood of your choice
- Lathe
- DIY Eccentric chuck
- Wood chisels
- Sandpaper
- Finish (optional)
1. Choose the type of wood - Softwoods like pine, fir, and cedar are easy to work with, but hardwoods like oak, maple, and cherry produce a finer finish.
2. Cut and prepare the wood - Choose the size and shape of the earrings you want to make. Cut the wood to the appropriate size and thickness and drill a small hole in the center for the lathe's spindle.
3. Mount the wood - Use a spur drive center on one end of the wood and a live center on the other to hold it securely in place on the lathe.
4. Turn the wood - Start the lathe and use various turning tools to shape the wood into the desired earring shape. Be very careful as you approach the final shape, as the thin wood can be easily damaged.
5. Sand and finish - Once the wood is shaped, sand it with progressively finer grits of sandpaper until it is smooth. Then apply a finish of your choice, such as wax or oil, to protect the wood and bring out its natural beauty.
6. Cut and assemble the earrings - Finally, cut the wood into two matching pieces for the earrings and add any desired hardware, like hooks or posts, to complete the project.
