- In this video I restore and colour a very faded 130 year old photograph of a Victorian woman posing with her bicycle.
I talk about restoration and colouring process for this photo and also talk about the important role that bicycles had in changing women's fashion forever!

Great history lesson as well, with the discussion of the role of technology in changing people's lives. Of course, technology can be good, bad, or mixed (and I truly believe that every engineer or person working in a technical profession should do at least one course on the role of ethics in technology), but for women and the working classes, bikes were simply good. Good for giving them independent mobility, exercise, even a trade that often expanded into different kinds of mechanical work as technology grew rapidly.
We can still see those kinds of benefits in many countries around the world without many cars, where workers in remote agricultural communities or even cities have much greater ability to get around, and transport manufactured goods and produce to and from local markets, etc
Thank you for your very thoughtful comment! I 100% agree on how important ethics should be as part of a technical education of the type you mention. My uni degree made ethics in art creation a big part of the course and I think art tends to effect peoples files in a far more overt way. And yes, you're correct that while I framed this as being in the past, these kinds of technological benefits are still providing mobility, in lots of ways, to people around the world. :)

Lovely social history commentary to accompany another wonderful restoration. It's nice how you acknowledge how confining women's wear really was. As for colorisation, I just did my first and I'm reasonably satisfied, but there are things you do I still don't know how to do myself. I'd love your advice!

Great video! Here in Denmark we have had a number of archive- and museum experts complaining of the term "Restoration" with this type of images and videos, meaning that you actually do a bit more than simply "restore" (guessing color f.i). Don't know what the concept would be, thou' ...

What did you do to the brick? Looks like you sampled a color from your reference image, then made lines in each brick, then smudged or blurred. Is that close? That worked really well.
Hey James. I'm a huge fan of your work. May I ask you to make masterclass on colouring environment such as grass, trees, building walls, earth, wooden staff ect.?
Thank you! I'm certainly considering doing more in depth focused tutorials in the future so I'll keep your comment in mind. Broadly speaking I used the same techniques which I showed in my Photoshop tutorial for every part of the image but I could certainly cover it in more detail in a follow up, thank you for the suggestion! :)

for your reference photos, do you just pull them off Google?
Broadly speaking yes. Occasionally I've looked on Ebay if I'm looking for old product images, such as branding on tins and such. Also some archives, such as the Library of Congress, don't always show up that well in Google Image searches, so if i'm looking for something they might have, for example, i'll have a quick double check on their website. but 99% is Google, at least as an entry point.
Do you do this for fun or do you get paid?
It's primarily a hobby at this point in time but I do paid commissions also.
@@JBColourisation so ur gaining something from it that's nice I know what's it like to spend hours even days editing a video or a photo I have spent 6 days to make a video lmao (not trying to promote here)
Yeah it's frustrating when you can't upload as often as you'd like :S And to be thinking "That would be a cool video" and adding it to a future pile for when you have time!
