- Belarus has been an ally of Russia in its war in Ukraine. Belarus shares a border with Ukraine and has been used by Russian troops as a staging post for the invasion.
But some Belarusians who oppose the government have gone to Ukraine to fight against the Russian invasion. The BBC spoke to some of these Belarusian fighters.

Belarusians are a great nation with a great history. They are already acting like heroes - since the beginning of the war, they have been sabotaging the plans for their troops to enter Ukraine and many have joined the Ukrainian army. @@rayn1728 I'm a Belarusian, but I live in Poland and I can say that polish government and people are very supportive in every aspect. Even teenage guys from my group in university are donating money and clothes to Ukranians
@@rayn1728 Currently, most people in Poland are focused on helping refugees. Everyone I know is involved in helping - some take refugees to their homes, some organize collections, others buy some stuff for reception centers or even make sandwiches and pancakes for refugees who arrive everyday at railway stations. Even my children had a toy collection for refugees in kindergarten. Everyone is very concerned about this whole situation and beginning of the war was a really big shock for us.
Ukraine and belarus have been neighbors for most their history the white rus and Ruthenians. The Mongol muscovites were just some militaristic tribe in the backwoods with no culture.

This is another unintended consequence. Putin didn't see this coming either.
I didn’t see any of this coming. I was sure Russia would just steamroll in and take the whole country in days before anything could be done about it.
Of course I’m glad to have been wrong about that. And I both admire and respect the Ukrainians for taking the weapons and equipment that the West gives them and has fought the Russians to a stalemate.
But I can’t help but wish that the Russian military leaders would learn the concepts of honour and compassion and use them to stop bombing and shelling civilian targets like that maternity and children’s hospital, or that theatre those people were sheltering in.
I can’t fathom what drives them to order attacks on such places. A maternity hospital isn’t a threat to anyone. Destroying it doesn’t bring Russia any closer to winning the war. All it’ll do is make them more hated and cause the Ukrainian military and rebel groups to dig in and fight harder.
If only they’d all see the futility of it all, go home and tear Putin a new one for wrecking both Ukraine and Russia to feed his ego.

Belarusians like Russia. Their country is literally called "white Russia" . Most of these guys will probably be dead in a day or two and the media is cheering them to the grave. Remember that Ukrainian International Legion and all the UK guys that volunteered......those guys are now dead. They were stationed in barracks on the Western border and started posting on Instagram. The Russians found their location from there and leveled the place with 30 rockets.

I have a friend who used to live in Belarus.
He once told me that Belarus was probably the most dystopian, authoritarian country ever. The whole country is economically collapsing, politically stagnating. Arrests are apparently not that rare in Belarus. It's not unheard of for someones father to go missing. Then their mother, then the rest of the family.
