Carl Orff - Gassenhauer

- Опубліковано 28 кві 2008
- Classic piece taken from Orff Schulwerk Volume 1: Musica Poetica.
Personally, I believe Gassenhauer to be one of the greatest life pieces ever created and I always feel like taking a really deep breath and running around the world when I listen to it. I hope you all feel similar when you listen to it and please feel free to comment on your feelings when you listen. Enjoy!
I heard it in Badlands and have been hooked ever since. The guy that scored that movie was a genius to put it in. It fit perfectly.
It’s hard to describe, but the best I can do to describe is that it’s serenity.
Great fucking movie!
Martin “Fucking” Sheen.
Sissy “Fucking” Spacek.
Warren “Fucking” Oates.
Directed by Terrence “Fucking” Malick.
I have been in love with this since I first saw Badlands many years ago. I think it is the most beautiful piece of music I have ever heard.
I haven't seen Badlands since the 80's. Such an iconic film and this piece of music is part of it's magic.
Amazing!!
THIS IS THE KIND OF MUSIC THAT MAKES YOU GLAD YOU'RE A HUMAN.
its gotta be those chord changes. especially played on the marimba. like explained on that Pacabel Rant at Penn State 10 yrs ago
It is certainly very lovely. I first heard it in Badlands also. I can't use "most" about any of the arts, but this is ethereal.
This music never fails to reduce me to tears.
You took the words out of my mouth....I was just about to write that. Absolute perfection
you need help
@@petehill8885 I need help because I am moved by beautiful music? What a ignorant comment
I love this piece of music. It doesn't reduce me to tears, unless it tears of joy. It makes me feel like I'm bounding or galloping. It bubbles. I love how it was used in "Finding Forrester" as he rides off into the horizon.
I first came across this piece on the movie Finding Forester. Fell in love as Sean Connery is riding his bicycle to the music, awesome!!
Yep, RIP Sir Sean Connery
I grew up to this movie with my father and I’m sure I will come back to find this comment. I love you dad, I might not show it but I’m going to miss you when you’re gone.
As a musician a lot of my music sounds whimsical like this, this is a song of freedom, just like William Forrester getting out of his cage. I hope I have the courage to get out of my cage
This music is immortal.
I just heard this wafting from a gentle chugging canal boat in Islington, London, during this brilliantly sunny, hot, day. The boat was full of young Spaniards waving and smiling, eating and drinking, and the moment was just *perfect*. It`s a beautiful piece.
I really like this :)
I'm german as Orff and for everyone who isn't familiar with our language a "Gassenhauer" is a word for a easy song sung or played on a street. Just to enjoy the audience for a short while. And I think that little piece achieves that. Orff was a music pedagogue and that song for sure made some kids happy again :)
Well said
Gassenhauer = the alleyway smash hit, which tells it pretty well.
Many “well liked” coments about films (it’s ok), but that is the point. Orff was a great composer and pedagogue.
THE 50 PEOPLE WHO DID NOT LIKE IT OBVIOUSLY HAVE NO SOULS.THIS TUNE LIKE ALL GREAT MUSIC WAKES UP SOMETHING DEEP INSIDE.YUM YUM
Most people know Carl Orff as a one hit wonder. He is far too underappreciated. This piece is glorious! It is beyond words!
as this one hit is another one than this, we already count two. O Fortuna!
OK I admit, having listened to this little gem he's a two-hit wonder. A lot of his other stuff is well......... what he says basically ua-cam.com/video/mcajagqLkWY/v-deo.html
I saw BADLANDS years ago and the first time I heard this I fell in love with this piece. It's addicting. Someone should loop it so it plays for an hour!
Hollie Meyer
Saw the same movie. and loop this whenever I am blue. SUCH A HAPPY PIECE OF MUSIC!!!!!
This piece makes me want to dance. It carries hints of any number of folkloric styles, Andean and Central American in particular. To me it feels gentle, flirtatious, cheerful. It makes me think of sunlit spring festivals, smiles, ruffles flowing through air, green branches and rippling streams. A tune about the sweetness of life.
First heard this when I was 3 or 4. Haunted me ever since. I want it at my funeral
Going to Hans Zimmer's version at my wedding soon.
Me too Anders
I discovered this song in the movie Badlands. Amazing.
It gives me a sense of grandeur as nothing has ever done to me before.
I have heard this song many times. Most recent time was at the end of the movie "Mad God". This is such a happy sounding piece of music with an eerie and soft sad tone. I love it.
I saw that today and my reaction was, “You end THAT with Gassenhauer?!” But, after all the oddities I’d just seen- what else would one expect?
@@jonathancarlson6127 It weridly fits perfectly!
The True Romance theme really did snake this melody....
And made it better
You're So Cool is a homage. Zimmer has always acknowledged this as the template for his piece.
Wow! Used in Finding Forrester's bicycle scene... :)
@Sarah Stocco yep, RIP Sir Sean Connery
just played this for my 4yr old. she absolutely loved it! sent her into a fit of dance. we listened to it over and over. definitely one of our favorites!
Hard to believe this was composed by the same man as O Fortuna.
Ah, just enjoying the apocalypse on this tropical deserted island where absolutely nothing can go wrong.
O fortuna starts Carmina Burana, which is a very lighthearted medieval story collection, sort of a folksy sex ed comedy piece. Nothing to do with apocalypse, much more about the joy of good fucking.
Actually this was NOT composed by Carl Orff, but rather by his assistant in the Orff-Schulwerk, Gunild Keetman.
@@jasonhurd4379 thanks. Someone knows their shit👍
@@rbsk999 🙂
The end of "Finding Forrester" film. Great movie ending with a spectacular song. Thanks to all involved.
Without exaggerating. The best piece of music my ears have ever heard.
I came across this beautiful work of art, at a unique moment in my life, where I had to decide to stay in the city for work or pursue a great love... today I'm with it, it's been a long 20 years🇧🇷
sweet sounds for a dark time.
Doy gracias a DIos por haber conocido esta maravillosa música. Gracias, maestro Orff.
I stopped what I was doing to listen. It was worth the stopping.
This song just makes me feel happy, like everything will be all right.
I had to come all the way from the highway and byways of Tallahassee, Florida to MotorCity, Detroit to find my true love. If you gave me a million years to ponder, I would never have guessed that true romance and Detroit would ever go together.
The amazing music ever over the credits for Terrence Malick's
"Badlands"
I analyzed this years ago for my music class in high school. I feel so happy coming back to it now, it brings up so many emotions. I love this piece so much.
Can't think of a piece of music that is more like nature to me...
I played this in year 3 for the school concert and I still play it today on the piano to my budgies :D
It's one of the soundtracks in Finding Forrester, a great movie
Incredibly haunting & inspiring - an exceptional blend of simple yet complex tones & rythms resulting in a really happy sound
I could easily listen to it all day
Brings back memories of visiting my Aunt, Uncle and cousins near Cleveland OH in the 1970s when this was played on the radio each morning.
One word: beautiful.
It's no wonder this simple but effective piece has made its way into popular films such as Badlands and True Romance. Love it.
This song is pure bliss. I can listen to it over and over. Badlands is an awesome movie too.
"You're so cool " brought me here
Watch the film "Badlands".
There is no good reason to watch badlands.
MrEpeeFencer what the fuck are you talking about?
Please someone respond. Is this song in creative commons so I can use it?
Me too
I've just listened to it once through, and I'll say that I didn't want it to end. I imagine it playing at a busy intersection with pedestrians crossing, and then dancing indefinitely.
when times were simpler and all round better. brings me back to my days as a youth.
The true origin to this number is Ein Alten Gassenhauer ( An Old Street Ditty) made for the Lute by Hans Neusiedler in 1536, would you believe. If nothing else, this is a wellproven hit from the renaissance. One good version is made by Ronn McFarlane on Between two Hearts, Dorian rec (DDOR-90225) ´96...
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hans_Neusidler
So simple yet so beautiful.
Carl Orff also wrote the piece "O Fortuna". Guy was an absolute genius, imagine what he could have composed with today's tools.
O Fortuna is only a very small part of the whole work i.e. 'Carmina Burana'
A work nothing short of genius.
Its so simple but speaks volumes to me on the inside some how. I really love this song.
fantastic comment!!!!! ive been searching for that song for the last 9 years, the search led me 2 this video and u.... WOW =)
Gassenhauer is probably my faviorite piece by Orff.. Our local classical music station in DC played it as the beginning of one of their segments. Gassenhauer is part of his Schulwerk, which is music for children. I think it's a brilliant piece for children.
If you listen carefully, you hear a single note; then additional notes are added until the entire orchestra is playing.
I attend performances of Carmina Burana every time it's performed at the Kennedy Center here in DC... I will never tire of it.
Wunderschön!
Gänsehaut!
Danke 🥳❤️
I am shocked this song is nearly 100 years old, i wouldnt of guessed it was anymore then 20 wow, its ahead of its time i feel.
+Ross stewart Sorry to shock you again, it`s 500 years old. It was composed by Hans Neusiedler in 1540. Carl Orff and Hans Zimmer re-arranged it. Makes no difference, it stays wonderfull!!
Turn the dial all the way to the right and dance. If this not make feel great your dead already! Always puts me in mind of this quote:
“Dance as though no one is watching you,
Love as though you have never been hurt before,
Sing as though no one can hear you,
Live as though heaven is on earth.” ― Souza
I didn t know this peace was from him even if true romance is one of my favorite music. Thanks for posting, great peace.
It feels like when I was younger, I have just saw all my life long listening to this song
This msic touches your soul , i first herd it wen i was about 12 years old in JB wiskey comercial 20 years later it still makes be travel to those days !
Amazing
I'm gonna listen to this when I ride a bike
;)
I’m going to get a bike just to play this over and over. 😃
Careful or you'll find yourself on a cliffside pondering life, miles from home
You're the cyclist now, dog!
this would be the sound of happiness, if happiness could speak. just so wonderful!
mmm... crispy tempura prawns. and at such a great price

😂😂😂
@SH7DOWS It's a reference to for ad for the frozen food company "Iceland". They used this piece in their ads for a few years.
I lol'd.
This one reminds me of the movie "Finding Forrester" it was a soundtrack of it. A beautiful melody and amazing movie.
This is a magic piece of music that lifts the heart when you hear it.
I played this in a performance at my school last year and I couldn't remember the name of the song so now I am really happy! I mean after a year I finally found it!
The simplicity of it, the easiness of it, the way it travels from note to note with the flick of oil on tiles of glass. This piece of happiness and glory I have listened to all my adult life since I heard it on the film "Badlands", since then I have always let it into my heart and my soul by having all around the house and I hope everyone hears it too. This is my national anthem! Wow! It is me to a tee!
this is a very masterpiece! ❤️ ❤️ ❤️ ❤️ ❤️ ❤️ perfection.. genius
That's it man! I was watching the movie "true romance" and i knew I heard the song in the beginning somewhere then searched for "hans zimmer you're so cool cover" then found "Carl Orff - Gassenhauer" this video then saw your comment and riddle solved. Thanks man!
Love it!!! Joyful and yes, I want to run around too!
I just love this music. It is so happy, full of joy. Thank you for uploading this video.
Makes you feel like you can jump over a mountain! Brilliantly uplifting!
It’s June 2020. I’m 47 years old and just watched Badlands. How has this song escaped my existence thus far? In dark times, is this ever the light.
I'm 48 years old, I don't know if it was "into the Badlands" you watched (I did) and knew this work in 1991, I was 19, almost 20 and catched this on the radio. I don't know if I still have the cassette, but also just found this music again! God bless Internet!
GREAT, GREAT, GREAT. I´ll try to do it with my pupils in next months.
It's composed by Hans Neusielder in 1536, Orff just rearranged it in his way. Marimba gives so much of "colonial heat" to that simple melody! :-)
I too fell in love with this peice of work years ago when i first heard it at the beginning of the movie,Badlands with Martin Sheen.hauntingly beautiful.
When I hear this piece I can't help but smile and have my spirits lifted. J
This music never fails to cheer me up!
I agree, most joyful and honest music I've ever heard.
this song gives me goose bumps..is that beautiful...thank you!
feeling happy now :-)

Yes I am and it took me forever to find this. I have to say I love this tune :)
Mad god ❤️
Ive enjoyed this particular piece for many years. It draws me up with its wonderful rhythm and its lively pace. I put my headphones on and let it wash over me.
So relaxing.
It's like the entrance tune to true romance
It is. Hans Zimmer made his own version of it.
Or stealed it 😢
This BRILLIANT melody has to up there in my favourite top 5 music recordings of all time. Im in heaven everytime I listen to it ❤❤❤😍. And Ive listened to this about a good 15 times already this evening. Now Im in lurve for sure!!!! I want this to be played at my funeral. It is just PURE UTTER PERFECTION. It makes me want to skip around and dance in my birthday suit on a hot sandy beach at dusk. Thank you for posting. NJ xx 💋💋💋
oh, this is so lovely - makes me want to dance with it out of the window and into a sunlit sky!
Thank you for posting this makes me feel like dancing as well. Badlands True Romance timeless music.
This is an absolute masterpiece, so beautiful.
Absolutely amazing!
So thrilled to have had a music box made at Christmas using this piece! My favorite thing!😊
I remember first hearing this song in Mad God and I was trying to find the name of the song for a good while. Glad I finally found it.

This song opened the morning show on WFMR in Milwaukee. So glad to have been led to this after all this time! :)
Im glad to find this music. It really has a special energy. Thanks
brilliant .. just brilliant..
Playing this song for a middle School project, and I love it. Amazing song, with enough parts for the 30 of us.
I never forget! Thank you again!
This bright and beautiful song makes me think of tropical beaches, warm breezes, and fruity drinks with umbrellas in them! Takes me right back to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico! LOVE THIS!!!!!
I love this música. I feel so good when I listen it.
First heard this on Finding Forrester in 2008. I was going through a box of stuff, found the movie. I watched it last night and decided to look up the song. Glad I did.
Have been looking for this piece of music for months!!!!+ 😆😆
I've heard this so many times used on TV in ads & films, only found the title by looking for Iceland ad music..... Absolutely brilliant
M e too, I had it in my mind the music was from Walkabout, so that's why I could never find it, thank you Iceland.
