It was a great moment in my life shaking Gary's, and Edd's hand. I play guitar to, but I couldn't play like them if I had 5 hands. Gary gave me 4 picks. I still have them.

"Free Bird" by Lynyrd Skynyrd is a classic rock staple that was once the most requested song on FM radio. BBC Radio 2 considers it a "rock radio staple matched only by 'Stairway to Heaven'". R.I.P. fellows, it was a helluva ride. Glad I got to be a part of it.

Well said. I said almost the exact same thing word for word yesterday after watching a clip of Tom Dowd talking about when he and Ronnie were going fishing and Ronnie had his two Chihuahuas under his arms and had a billy club hanging off his wrist. Tom said when they got down to the water Ronnie starting bopping gators on the head with the billy club and said "These damn things think my dogs are dinner" I could listen to stories about Ronnie and the boys all day long. All those awesome guys are gone for mostly no good reason. Gary sharing these stories is a special thing. Think about it, Skynyrd released Pronounced in 73. Street Survivors in 77 then poof. They weren't even halfway done. These favorite songs that don't exist. Probably 30 more classics. We were so blessed to have them, and robbed of years of memories which pales in comparison to what the families lost. I've never met anyone in Skynyrd but they were at every wedding, barbecue, funeral, and rocked every traffic jam and road trip of my life. I am so grateful they were such a vital part of my life.
i am a huge fan of Lynyrd Skynyrd. more so of Ronnies genius writing ability and how tight this band really was.. them songs are true facts about his life life. how easy we forget, that Skynyrd plane touched down in every state that year of the U.S. tour and every venue was sold out prior to landing from 1974 118 shows, 1975 117 shows, to 1976 125 shows. including opening for the Rolling Stones in the UK. 25 lead changes in a 3 way guitar battle on Free Bird, purest of rock n roll lyrics in southern form.

I am 71. I grew up in west side Jacksonville in same neighborhood same schools, same malls as Gary, Allen and Bob. Gary was my friend. I knew Bob and Allen but not as well. Gary and I would meet before Lake Shore Junior High where we went would open doors and let us in. The group The Mods were all close friends and if alive we are still good friends one, Rick Doeschler, has been my friend since 2cd grade so 65 years. Rick posts guitar playing daily. Rick picks songs learns the guitar part, plays, records posts..
I always found it amazing that in the 50’s and 60’s American kids were listening to British artists and British kids were listening to American artists and out of those polar opposites so many bands were created. Skynyrd and the stones for starters were two of many bands formed.
Cross-pollination, my friend! And mutual admiration societies also formed as a result. Perfect example---Lynyrd Skynyrd loved Paul Rodgers and Paul Rodgers loved Lynyrd Skynyrd!
Sad to hear that Gary Rossington is gone. There's a photo of him somewhere in the 70s Skynyrd days wearing white shoes, and ever since then I've called casual white footwear "Gary Rossington shoes."
That is what was so tremendous about Lynyrd Skynyrd. With them having the three guitarist is what made them to me standout above the rest of any other bands in there time. Just my opinion no one could ever match what they were doing back in the day. So Long Live Lynyrd Skynyrd.
Skynyrd would not be the same without Gary and his awesome guitar playing it's something that he's the last surviving member of the band along with the drummer.
Skynyrd was at the Head of the Altar The Outlaws sat to the right of the father and Marshal Tucker to the left. Nuthin has changed in my musical interests since my older brother turned me onto Southern Rock in 77. I’m 61 one ☝🏾 now and not a day goes bye where Southern Rock ain’t playin out my music box ❤✊🏿🙏🏼
What an amazing 24minutes of treasured southern rock history!! Growing up in Florida, you get that southern rock in your blood and it's there forever. Hearing Gary tell the stories that made it all happen gave me chills. Thanks for the memories!! Freebird is right at the top of the list of great rock songs. Stairway, Dark Side, etc., there's room for everyone, but Freebird does it for me. "Play it pretty for Atlanta!", i hear Ronnie's voice say everytime it comes on. The live album One More From the Road captured them at their best. They had just got started, when all of a sudden, it was over.
In 1972, the band (then comprising Van Zant, Collins, Rossington, Burns, Wilkeson, and Powell) was discovered by musician, songwriter, and producer Al Kooper of Blood, Sweat & Tears, who had attended one of their shows at Funocchio's in Atlanta. Kooper signed them to his Sounds of the South label, which was to be distributed and supported by MCA Records, I used to see them at Funocchio's in ATL and in other clubs in ATL. I went to all 3 nights when they played at the Fox Theatre that ended up being thier double live album One More From The Road. Still have my ticket stubs framed and the original vinyl double album from 1976. Those 3 nights were the best I ever saw and heard them play of the dozens of the times I saw them live. Memories for me never to be forgotten!
I was so glad that they were practicing the way that they did!!!!!"" Because I was born in 1971 and apparently they knew that I was a coming along and made the music for my life!!!! Lol God bless you all today 🙏 Pace out

I'm a native of Atlanta. So are my folks before me. When Lynyrd Skynyrd chose to do a live album they purposely chose Atlanta, Ga. I heard Ronnie Van Zant talking about it in an interview. He said they chose Atlanta purposely and they also chose the historical Fox Theater because of the acoustics. In Freebird he says " playing pretty for Atlanta. " I rarely get to hear that but it gives me goosebumps. I am so thankful. I know that Lynyrd Skynyrd is playing where they are. And it sounds more beautiful than any of us can imagine. But I did hang on to my ticket stub from the show the revamped band did in BR in 92 I believe it was. I was in graduate school at LSU at the time. Worked at the Enterprise-Journal in McComb for a few years; went back to Gillsburg a couple years ago to see the memorial.

11:50 I'm not one bit surprised they rehearsed 12 hours a day....Original LS hands down BEST live band I've ever heard...u think it's a studio recording.
'Who's mother would let you play' hahaha. Classic. My mom allowed my 3 brothers to bring friends over to play as long as rhey were gone before dad got home. I had the privilege to play my accordion down in the old basement as well.. with my brother.. who played awesome drums. And played skynyrd music alot... he actually looked exactly like Gary Rossington.
A Great Video Here, Thanks, I have asked this Question A Hundred Times and Got No Answer, When did Billy Become A Roadie for the Band, And when did he start Playing Keyboards for the Band, Thanks, Cousin Figel
Powell, who went to Bishop Kenny High School, joined Skynyrd in 1972 after working for the Jacksonville band for a couple of years as a roadie. Johnny Van Zant said his brother invited Powell to join the band after he heard him playing piano during a rehearsal of "Free Bird."
Got to see them in 75 and 76, a moment in my life I'll never forget. From the first time I heard them, I thought they were the best group in the world. Seen them in the fall in Kingsport Tn.(2022). You could tell Gary wasn't there, didn't sound the same. That made the 8th time over the years I'd seen'm. Always wanted to go fishing with Ronnie. Ain't hardly a day goes by I don't listen to one of their songs.
Trav Nugara-------> Thank u very much for posting this. I love hearing their stories. I spent my Summer vacations at JAX Beach n 50s-early 60s. It'd suddenly rain cats and dogs nearly every afternoon at 3-4; water would b up to/over hubcaps n streets. This blond haired boy my age on other street side motioned for me to cross over street to where he was....about halfway cross street my left leg suddenly sank into a deep hole.....when I lifted it out, it was cut to the bone....I had fallen into an old city street storm drain with broken crossbars. When that blond haired boy saw my leg, he hauled azz..... decades later, I wondered if he was that little mean azz Van Zant boy, Ronnie....🤔
My parents moved to Switzerland Florida back in the 80s. Up from there was Fruit Cove and on the river side there was a big metal gate with a rebel flag on it and they said it was one of the band members home.

Ed King lit a bottle rocket! I wish that 1970 diary of Ed's was released, somehow. Gary saying they COULDN'T copy each other says a lot.
This is the best thing I've paid total attention to in a while. My sister-in-law who married one of my older brothers turned me on to Skynyrd and I've been southern rocking with em for 40+ years. 💕 n ✌️
There really is a lot of Free Bird stories. Steve Clark (RIP) played Free Bird for his audition into Def Leppard, and he nailed it.
It's amazing the way God put these rednecks in our lives, and blessed us the 🌎 world 🌍 with there 🎸 music 🎼🎶 and how many great people have left us in ✈️🛫🛫✈️ airplane tragic accidents and the way Van zent seen it all coming, I guess besides God being a baseball ⚾⚾ fan he God also loves music I'm pretty sure the song Free Bird was given to Van zent by the almighty Lord and blessed him so he could and would share it with the 🌍🌎 world love this 🎵🎶🎵🎶 music 🎼🎶🎵 forever thank you Jacksonville kids and thanks 🙏 to our LORD.
I nearly fell outta my chair when he said "You're gonna have to shoot me in the ass or the elbows" Real life experiences is what Ronnie wrote about and that's why we love the music so much
11:50 I'm not one bit surprised they rehearsed 12 hours a day....Original LS hands down BEST live band I've ever heard...u think it's a studio recording.
Wowwwww thats the Best Dyyyyyam True Story Ive Heard of Them!!!!! How Damn Awesome!!!!!!!
Gimme back my bullets, hell yeah Johnny boy loves Skynyrd..
This is a great story! I love it!
Thanks so much for posting. They were special...man, they were Saturday Night Special.
R.I.P. All the boys in the band are gone.
Trav...Nice job with the story telling.
Thanks Stan!
When you saw Gary live he looked like the silent type. My god he could talk. But thank god he did, these stories are great.
What I would give for all these boys to be alive today.
Thanks for sharing!
'' BEST BAND EVER ! ''
RIP Gary (03-05-23)
💔😢
A Great Video Here, Thanks, I have asked this Question A Hundred Times and Got No Answer, When did Billy Become A Roadie for the Band, And when did he start Playing Keyboards for the Band, Thanks, Cousin Figel
figured you already knew!! grew up with Ronnie, Don Henley, Alice Cooper& 1st Cuz with Ozzy too...ya should have been a used car salesman...😅
The Alan Collins story is the best.
Saw Skynyrd back in the day a couple times, great memories..this is a great vid
Thanks for sharing bro
My parents moved to Switzerland Florida back in the 80s. Up from there was Fruit Cove and on the river side there was a big metal gate with a rebel flag on it and they said it was one of the band members home.
Just remembered that I was hit between the eyes 👀 with a softball ⚾ lol in school 🏫 myself great video 🎶 thank you for sharing ☺️❣️
Angelic birthday Allen Collins 🤘🏻😭
Incredible stories LS will live on forever , Wonder what the Les Paul goldtop is worth at mark 19:11 ?
Greatest rock band, musicians and writer's, brilliant, was on a bus home from work when I heard about the plane crash, worse day of my life !!!
