Watching this from New Zealand:
We've let ourselves lose a lot of our railways also. But we never lost an entire multi-platform terminus! Now I hear that they've had to replace the river bridge that crosses into Hobart, but that it's only going to be a road bridge with no provision for railways. So no trains of any kind into Hobart and its still considerable port unless somebody splashes-out for a dedicated railway bridge (fat chance of that).
What a disaster. This must be a conspiracy from the road transport lobby and/or extreme stupidity from the Tasmanian government.
Great days at Second River Tramway..great to see Ralf Proctor driving the litte Krauss down to North Lalla station. Get out along the line,dig out some old sleepers, replace them and down to the workshop for morning tea where Jack Shannon had the tea pot ready and the wood stove on. Back up to drill the sleepers using a 32 volt drill and power from the turbo on the krauss. Back to the workshop for lunch and savaloys and chat...back up the track line and surface ..packing sleepers..wonderful relaxing fun days out in the paddock along the track.

When this was made we were about a decade away from losing our branch line between St Marys and Fingal .. At the time logs , coal and mixed freight saw 18 track workers , four at the station fully employed ...After it shut we lost so much and the heavy trucks needed to haul the same stuff has impacted to this day the local highway ..happens everywhere...

Bill Hollingsworth a terrific way to spend the day on a train , I can't see why the derwent valley railway line can't be used , the longer it sits the smaller the chance of it happening, who needs mona when you have tasmanias scenary
Yeah I can not see why Derwent Valley railway can run it just need a bit of track to get started

Parattah Station and tudor style building behind is the hotel. Both buildings mostly intact today which is unusual for tas rail heritage. Apologies for commenting on a 10 mth old comment

Heritage is strong in Tasmania and I believe the trains will return to cater for the vast numbers of cruise ship passengers that visit our shores.They (the gov) are starting to realise this.
IDEA: create a retro soundtrack....With today's technology we could chip in if we recognise a visual... mention the position on the clip on the red bar....and we are away with the start of a script, some clever research and a professional announcer type and you have a winning....heritage video.....YES?
What a shame ,other states run tourist trains ,good old Tassie chuck out our heritage what a boring lifeless place we live in .
Only a very small carbon footprint.
