In the original Broadway production, the 16th of 19 numbers was a reprise of this tune as a specialty tap dance by a 16 y.o. kid getting her first break in a book show. She was singled out by reviewers and went on to rapid success before Hollywood snapped her up. Her name was Eleanor Powell.
Jack Haley was already a polished singer and dancer on the stage before this, but most will remember his 1939 classic performance as the Tin Man in "The Wizard of Oz". The song is truly a standard, and Jack knows when to keep his hands to himself.
I wouldn’t have know he was the tin man either but I can certainly see it now! I love to imagine living in this era. I had no idea how many people sang this song or how old it was.
A window into the past. This was thought to be a lost film, just very recently found. But at the time, these songs were the bees knees, the technicolor state of the art, and top singers like Annette Hanshaw were covering these songs and selling tons of them. And today so many people don't even recognize how great this is or even know who these people are. Now think of the garbage being spewed out today, the "top" stars, and wonder where THEY will be in 90 years...
Wow! I didn't know this film survives. I love these two and especially the dancing exit, so "Broadwayish" and typical of many numbers in the first talkie period. Thanks for posting!
I didn't realise it was first sung as a duet, but that makes sense: the line "wear your flannel underwear when you climb a tree" is meant to be addressed to a woman.
@@bertmustin He still looked 20 something at 41. Why the hell am I back here all of a sudden? I want Karen Prell content. I'm steering well clear of Jack because my sister found out I liked him.

Jack Haley also starred in The Wonder Show on radio.
This is beautiful and sweet and I listen to it quite often. Thank you for posting this, it's given me a lot of joy :)
Never start an argument, with a bumble bee.

They were both in the original Broadway cast. Just wonderful!
They don't write em like that these days!
Amo este video.
I love this song!
This is delightful - Thanks! I've only known the song from Ruth Etting's recording.
Best version by far! ❤
Who'd ever think that the Tin Woodman was "darling" in his youth. That's what my lady Lynn says, anyway....
He was indeed darling!
If you must know, the Tin Woodman's real name is Nick Chopper, not... Boq... 😒
Youth is a stretch. He's about 33 years old in this clip.

Ruth Buzzy before there was Ruth Buzzy!
Was this colorized or actually two-strip Technicolor?
It was two-strip technicolour!
@@EtchC-ji1xy Thanks

The Tin Man!
The best character in Oz!
whoo as a bonzo's fan
Who sang this song originally, her or Ruth?
These guys did. This is the original song from the broadway production
Helen Kane may have sung it first, 1927.
The Tin Man from the Wizard of Oz.......later, Liza Minelli married his son......absolutely loved this.
Jack Haley, the Tin Man in the Wizard of Oz...
@@RoyHowellMusic oh I didn’t know this about his son and Liza Minnelli !

Well I guess this was the 30s .
Is she trying to sound like Annette Hanshaw impersonating Helen Kane?
Leif Vejby; As Zelma was the one who introduced the song, I'd say it's the other way around.
UwU
Hmmm.
It's Jack, isn't it?
As usual, Helen did better than Zelma
Well if her man wears that much makeup then she's got worse problems.
