Thank You for posting this with the actual year it hit the air waves though I believe it's actually older than 1987. Maybe only 1-2 years before 1987 but not much. This was a DJ fave at parties in the mid 1980's that could only be found in certain record stores around the NYC but you had to know where to go to find it. I think some obscure record stores that sold only to DJs in lower Manhattan carried M/A/R/R/S. This record NEVER sold to Tower Records or HMV or any other commercial record store. I only know this because my friend's brother had a DJ biz as a side hustle, as many people did then to make ends meet and help pay for college tuition --Thank You Pres. Reagan!!. I remember him telling me that this release could only be found at select stores and you had to be a DJ in order to get into the store; The first time I heard "Pump Up The Volume" was at their house party in the early to mid 80's because it was BEFORE I graduated HS [in 1986]. Another time I heard it was most likely at my sister's Sweet 16 in 1985. I know because I requested it be included on the play list for the night. My sister absolutely LOVED that song. My friend's brother and his cousin were the DJs that night. What a great memory!! Cheers from NYC!!!
Can't possibly convey how critical, transformative and pervasive this track (all permutations) was in clubs worldwide back in '87. Nod to Eric B & Rakim's 'Paid In Full', of course! Without either (oh, Coldcut, whither thou?), De La Soul's meisterwerk 3ft High & Rising would have been unthinkable. Ditto the Human League's re-imagined version of Dare as the League Unlimited Orchestra. Seminal. Library of Congress, where y'all at?
Grandmaster Flash was first I think, although in the UK we'd had alot of Hooked on Classics and megamixes going on in the early 80s. Non Stop Ecstatic Dancing by Soft Cell was released a month before Love and Dancing, dunno if that makes it the first pop remix album tho but I cant think of others before.

Yep! This is the way! I had this on a variety cassette with other early hip-hop classics like Rakim and LL Cool J. Wish I could find it. It was back in 1991.
Ahhh, the breakdown at 3:53. I will *never* tire of it! I'd forgotten they also sampled din da da in here too. I'm sure the redone version was after rhe lawyers from all those they sampled from got through with it. 🙄
Never heard the Original version before. But still remember hearing it! Loved it! It was the perfect dance song way back when. :) still is! Now I use it for art development.:)
This and Salt n Pepper - Push It. Truly epic dance classics from opposite sides of the same coin. If neither of these songs don't make you want to get up and dance then maybe you don't have the "dance gene" in your body. JK. 🕺🕺🕺🕺🎶🎶🎶🎶
This was on the soundtrack to bright lights big city with michael j fox. I used to have the red cassette single with the remix on the b side. wish I could find it today. this my favorite song ever. I will never get tired of hearing it, or the multiple remixes, I've even made my own remixes of it. dope as hell
5:26-5:30... the voice you heard during this mark was Tommy Kirk. The quote "Mars Needs Women" is from the 1968 movie with the same name ("Mars Needs Women").
I was born in 1987 and Im just listening to it looks like me as neo like found the yellow red music pill on UA-cam and I hope other born at the same year find this tune also 😮😅❤
The herald of a new kind of music in 1987. Listening to it I'd place it rather some 3 or 4 years later. Groundbreaking. Genious. The blueprint of an era to come.
This is the US 12" record mix [7 min, 10 sec]. It lacks the fake "Wolfman Jack" sample from Lovebug Starski and The Harlem World Crew's song _Positive Life_ , found only on the UK 12" record mix [ 5 min, 07 sec] and _UK Radio Remix_ [4 min, 06 sec.]. The UK version was used in the original video.
@SevelRomanov You're correct! Very first version out I had as a kid. It was different-and better! If you find it-letme know. If I find it at my parents house-I'll upload.

First heard this on WSGR FM 91.3 operated by St. Clair County Community College (now WRSX FM.) while enrolled in a broadcasting audit.
Ofra Haza is the cherry on top of this classic!
Always loved this version more than any others.

I was 11 at the time, but even then this tune felt like a line drawn in the sand to the rest of music, "what you got for me now?" LOVE IT

Crrrazy good song. We clubbed to it in the 80s.

BACK IN LATE 1987 DJ MARLEY MARL FROM WBLS FM IN NEW YORK USED TO MIX THE HELL OUT OF THIS JAM ON HIS MIDDAY SHOW TITLED IN THE MIX.

So close to the record I use to have. Been searching and searching for the version I grew up on.

It should be credited as the US version, but hey, it still changed my life back then, so…

There is a song with female vocals that uses this track as base , anyone knows the name of that track?

Salt'n'Peppa? ... 😂

You're right. the original contains a sample from "Roadbloack" by Stock-Aitken-Waterman at 3:40
well it is the original version if you listen closely to the samples such as "Roadbloack" by Stock-Aitken-Waterman for example.
