BBC pitched breakfast television perfectly back then. Their competitor on ITV TV-am which would launch a month later pitched it all wrong. This was why 1983-1984 BBC Breakfast Time was No. 1 with 2 to 3 million watching per day, TV-am had barely 100,000 to 200,000 watching per day during 1983.

TV-AM had to hurriedly bring forward their launch because the BBC started broadcasting Breakfast Time much sooner than they thought they would. Ironically, ITV pitched a more serious format because they though that's what the BBC would do. They got it wrong and had to drastically change tack later on that year.

@@argyess You see, the problem I have is why did TV-am think they had to copy BBC in the first place? If they thought BBC would be doing "Newsnight with cornflakes" style of breakfast show, why then offer the same?? A very British, snobby, high brow, elite attitude. If TV-am suspected this, they should have offered a lighter fare. If TV-am had have launched, with a schedule of theirs from 1984, they would have done well, and probably even beaten BBC quicker and not go down the financial mess they did, which was only recovered from by late 1986.

It wasn't anything to do with jealousy. He left because he was offered a high profile primetime evening slot doing the Wogan chat show 3 times a week on BBC One, undoubtedly much better paid than his Radio 2 gig.
