A greedy corporation covered up dangerous conditions and paid off experts? Statutes of limitations used to protect the corporation? Local authorities ignoring the dangers because of jobs? I'm shocked.
My grandmother painted radium dials in Germany about 100 years ago. The girls were cautioned not to put the brush tips in their mouth, but many did anyway. It was the only way to get a fine point. She was sick in the hospital for a while, but recovered and found a different job. She went on to marry, move to the States and have 5 children.
I already knew about radium and the jaw-rot girls. But this was suggested to me and this was a great story of these poor, unfortunate ladies. I feel deeply horrible for what they went through.
In Englewood, a suburb of Denver, there is a square block in a residential neighborhood covered by a mound of dirt. It was a former radium factory which was covered over. The dirt and cap are deteriorating and leaking but they can remove it for fear of kicking up radioactive dust.
The location of the the building is not at the triangle in picture at the end , but it was within about 3 blocks west. The location in the video is a multi story apartment complex for older adults, built on the site of a grade school ,Columbus school, which was torn down after many years of non use. I played basketball in the play ground and had a relative who lived two doors away. I'd heard about this when I lived in Ottawa.
I can remember seeing The Radium Girls Story being told on one of the Discovery Channels on Sky TV, now after seeing this I'd like to see the film. What a waste of life for many of these young girls and women and shocking to think this happened in our recent history.
I worked in Glen Cove, NY for a number of years and had heard from some old-timers that there were Radium Girls there too. Same exact story without the lawsuit, never heard that part. A company called Li Tungsten was there, don't remember if that was where the RGs were or not. There were "evaporative pools" where un-regulated "waste chemicals" were pumped to "evaporate". These places were on Glen Cove Creek and utilized barges in their day. an attempt to dredge the creek in the '90s was halted because they pulled up some HOT materials, I heard ingots of something I guess were dropped on an off-load. Either way between that, Konica Imaging being across the street causing all kinds of havoc too and an un-regulated public dump up the road created one of the largest Super Fund Sites in the east I believe, 33 acres I seem to remember. I was around for a lot of the clean-up as I worked at the end of that road. It was much worse then they projected. I've been gone from there 15 years now, luckily no problems (so far).

Mostly when women suffer something they say: it's psychological. But because this was obviously physical they found something new: syphilis.
If the suffering is not physically apparent, it is not illogical to think of psychologically induced suffering. This is the same with men. Gender has nothing to do with it.
Of course it doesn't matter if its women or men.
Their gender did have a part in it, but the main problem was the rich/powerful trying to cover it up. Their gender helped in covering it up b/c women at the time didn't have the same respect/rights they do now and we're easily discredited. We have to look at what was happening in their time period to fully understand it.

I produced a video for a company doing "Our Shining Lives" ...its weird how this was normal in the 1920s...
