- In Leonardo da Vinci's painting "The Last Supper," one obvious detail has affected the lives of men and women for generations. Whether or not it was da Vinci's intention, his painting has changed what is acceptable for individuals at the dinner table. Because Judas was the only disciple with his elbow on the table in the painting, it is now considered impolite and rude to sit with your elbows on the table.

That's not why you're not supposed to have your elbows on a table. Back when houses were not exactly flat, nor tables exactly stable, putting one's elbows, or hands or arms, would wobble the table or shift. Also placing elbows occupies space where food and drink would go. Also, accidents occurred like knocking over wine, which is a sin in any time. Party foul!
JIMMY IM GETTING THE BELT LOL
Well now I got a extra reason to put my elbows on the table.
It is rude to put your elbows on the table in the US, but not in France or other countries. I rather doubt this is the reason why.
Beautiful
+M Walton Thank you! :)
the painting is not the source for this... do not follow and believe a guy like this!
What is the source then?
this painting is not the reason why we don't put our elbows on the table
If all are for 1 , there needs to be only one against all
nowUknow, This is nonsense!
In THIS painting, Judas happens to be leaning on the table, pushed there by the actions of Peter.
Elbows on the table were ALREADY considered rude, which may be why Leonardo chose to paint HIM acting in that manner.
Why was it rude?
Because tables were often created from boards laid on trestles, and were disassembled whan not in use. If everyone leant on the table, they could destabilise it, so that it fell over, with the entire meal on it.
You seem to have some funny idea about this painting. You speak about it as if it was a popular movie, distributed world wide. It wasn't. It was in the private dining room of a religious order.
While art lovers might have heard of its repute, very few had seen it. How exactly do you imagine it influence table manners of people outside the monastery at Milan?
There is a baby below on Judas Head... see it??
that ain't the reason, it's because it looks awkward and bummish
