2:17 A word of caution: red and green are complimentary colors, but red-green color blindness is the most common type of color blindness. Make sure that color blind viewers can see your text.
I remember in the old days of UA-cam, you could ONLY choose from the three default thumbnails. Sometimes you got screwed with the three choices so creators would reupload their videos but at different lengths (like with filler added to the end) so that UA-cam would generate a different set of three thumbnails to use. Only established UA-cam channels could upload custom thumbnails. I think you had to get 10k or 100k subscribers to reach that status.
So true, I remember people would make a custom thumbnail and put it at the end of their video for like 3 minutes to guarantee it popped up in the generated thumbnails. Imagine what that would do to watch-time retention today lolol
I love that his recommendations are so specific and aren’t the EXACT SAME things every other “How to grow on UA-cam” channel is saying. They usually all say the same stuff!
You honestly have truly inspired me with your tips, some of the tips i had not even thought about, alot of people in my content type make the mistakes, so im hoping this can give me an edge, thank you!
I truly mean no disrespect, but friend you’ve been uploading regularly for years and have 404 subs. Perhaps you need to change your content to something more marketable
Seriously, you are absolutely brilliant. This is one of the most intelligent and practical channels I have come across. It is really making me think about my channel. These videos on thumbnails are great. I hadn’t really considered the point about search vs browse thumbnails, but it now makes perfect sense. As a new channel, and given my field, I really wanted to focus on search. Familiar themes that stand out for someone who knows what they want. But I am now getting a lot of browse and the thumbnails might not mean as much to a more casual viewer.
Took us a long time to realise that taking photos for thumbnails is so much better than taking a still from a video. It looks better and the editing is much easier!
This is a smoking hot video. Another thing you can do has to do with what you said about reading text left to right. If you can imagine a Z shape on your thumbnail, place important things along the Z lines. Like you said, it's how we read, but many people miss out on the diagonal line on the Z. You can place important things along that diagonal line to help make the thumbnail be more aesthetically pleasing. It's even better if you use 'Gaze Motion' on that line. Hope this makes sense. It is one of the fundamentals of design theory. Many people use it in their thumbnails with out noticing.
I'm always thinking about getting the different elements of my thumbnails to stand out. I've never considered using the color wheel before, so I think you just showed me my new favorite tool!
I find the way that you break down the topics of your videos so in depth and helpful. Going into micro - categories of topics and also talking about "who" this knowledge is good for in "what" situations is a lot more valuable to me than generalized broad information. Thank you for this.

I may be different than other people but I hate too agressive thumbnails with stupid faces or "shouting" text. And I never click on them. Yours are OK cos they are quite simple and clear.
Your videos are freaking awesome, i took so many notes. Only thing i would like is if the ending is longer, keep the recommended vids longer so i can click on them LOL
I agree! Ed take your own advice on reading comments Ed! I hate not clicking your next vid in time and my auto play begins the next vid in my “watch later” list.
One thing I always wondered about thumbnails CTR is, does the view count of your video make more people want to click on that thumbnail? On my channel, for videos that have a lot of views, the CTR is really high (despite the fact the thumbnail isn't that good). I've put this down to the view count and how that impacts CTR.
Ok, I've watched enough of your videos now... you are definitely worth following! Great Advice and Nicely Delivered - hope people say the same about mine occasionally! All the Best, Alexander
Great tips, but I disagree that you must use a photo over video as the basis for a thumbnail. I found that recording a thumbnail specific video (4K) allows me to vogue lots of different facial expressions and make slight movements of the whisky bottle or other items in my thumbnail. Then I can use FCPX to scrub through the video, set markers, and give myself 3 or 4 options for still frames. If I was using Photoshop to isolate my headshot, I’m sure a still photograph would be better. Cheers!
OK… After watching some of your videos, I’ve just spend my Sunday afternoon editing all my thumbnails and I’m ready to wake up to 1000 new subscribers tomorrow morning! Thanks! 😉
Thanks man. Top notch content. I've hit a rut with my photogrpahy tutorial based channel and your videos and insights are really helping me to rethink things. Luvin ya work! 😍👍
This is a great video loaded with tips. Thank you. Do you or any one here have any tips for a newer channel using a dog? Should I be using him in the thumbnails?
Thank you so much for your videos, and I can see I have a lot learn about those thumbnails, but in my next video I want to use as many of your tricks as possible :)
I am sooooo bad about actually taking photos for my thumbnails. I'm always finishing editing, then deciding I don't wanna mess with taking a photo for whatever reason, and settling for a still even though I know better. lol
small UA-cam channels can be tricky. This video will give show you how to make better UA-cam thumbnails and help you get these basics right for higher click through rates and views .. that's awesome
Why not repeat the same opinion ... excellent video as ever. Always re-working on the thumbnails and it is hard to be sure what works in different area. As I do Photoshop tutorials don't think it looks plain weird having a photo of me in front of Photoshop etc I agree text should be minimal. Good strong color contrast. The thing I always forget is the bottom right and not having there as the timestamp is over that. Simple is always best !! (not that I ever get that right). Be great if UA-cam added a basic YT thumbnail editor or at least offer more than three examples from the videos as they generally always suck.

Amazing advice. Appreciate you, Adam!
Thanks. Indeed.
Yeah I’m colourblind. Putting red text over saturated green makes the red blend in

I have just found your channel and love, love, love it - just the boost I needed as a growing art channel x
I love the "3 subscribers left" comment, laughed a lot - thanks for sharing a failure! 😂
if I smile in my videos i lose 20
The thumbnail tip(lower right corner) saved me xD I had to move my "success" up on my image because of this haha Thanks! great video!

Yes mate! Been looking forward to this one dropping... notepad at the ready!

@@FilmBooth I have a question is 16.6% ctr good enough?

Agree! Many large UA-camrs have crappy thumbnails. 😩
Thank you for saying it. Thank God you mentioned that these bigger channels have crap thumbnails.

Okay, the whole blue steel or fish face...was pretty funny. Great tips on thumbnails.
This is the best channel for channels on UA-cam
Yup dude! You are right 💯

Great video, learned a lot and I will keep the colors wheel in mind when I do borders around my thumbnails.
Oh yea that might work, have a play and maybe try a few different combos then see which one you think works best
You manage to slap me with helpful knowledge with every video. Luv ya work!!
Everything about your channel and content I’m digging and finding super helpful. Thanks!!!

A nice thumbnail doesn’t necessarily make it clickable. It needs to fit what the audience expects and either make them curious or intrigued by it.
Thanks i forgot to comment first 😁😁,,
I wish there would be a place where u can rate our thumbnails😂😂😂 ,,
Thats actually going to be my next live!! I'll be posting info about it on the community wall next week

What are the rules when it comes to what images you can use on your thumbnails?
I always find it weird how this guy does exactly what he tells us to do to get us to watch him👍😂
Great tips 👍
You give the best advice! I should've found you earlier
Where did you get the lights in the background?
When you said to take a photo instead of use an image, does that apply to every channel? Animation channels don’t really have the luxury to take a photo of their subject
Well no that wouldn't apply unless you wanted to feature in the thumbnail
so if you're a gamer channel what should u do then??
Are you using a teleprompter?
