How to ID Milkweed vs Dogbane (but it didn't turn out quite like I expected!! =)

  • Hi Friends! Well, this was a fun one. I started out trying to do a simple ID video on distinguishing milkweed from dogbane (a little late in the year as the dogbane shoots were pretty tall). However, when I got to a vital part of the ID, I made a very interesting discovery. So this video, although it will lead you to common milkweed, is more a lesson on knowledge, experience, and how it's good to question everything! =)
    Huge thanks to our friend Mads for the music!!!

    Awesome video! Such an intimate approach to plant ID. And it goes to show that we can’t just rely on what we hear from others without diving deep into our own experience. One of the most challenging parts of plant identification in my opinion, is that the plants in one area can be so different than what we see in books and videos. It really takes a lot of inspecting plants over and over and speaking with local foragers. The burdock in my area is so different looking than yours. Or at least what I have found and been shown. Thank you for helping me understand how to better identify 2 plants today 😀

      I totally agree! The more I explore wild foods, the more I've been impressed with the variations encountered, even from plant to plant. Dandelion is a great one for that -- out here in the fields we'll find leaves that are deeply toothed, and some with leaves that are almost rounded and untoothed. Eventually, though, one gets a feel for "dandelion". I'm going to be searching for more dogbane, as this one doesn't meet two of the usual criteria -- the leaves are spaced a bit too closely together as they ladder up the stem, and obviously the surprising lack of bitterness. Sam also noted that he's only tasted them when younger -- perhaps they lose bitterness as they get older, as they are here? Unfortunately I won't get to check that possibility out until next year =)

    I love experiments! So I had to check out my known milkweed. I had moved the plants a few weeks ago and they looked quite stressed. I'm almost sure they had green stems before the move. Now the stems were dark red with some of the top leaves turning yellow and even brown. The leaves that were still in pretty good shape were fuzzy on the bottom and those stems were definitely square. I did not know that before. I had nibbled some of the flower buds last summer and they were yummy so a little piece of a leaf got nibbled. Not great but not bad. Definitely not bitter.
    So off to check out the dog bane patch! Pretty green stems. No flats. A light rub revealed a very shiny smooth round bright green stem. No fuzz on underside of leaves. So now for a taste test. Not much taste to a tiny droplet of sap. So the leaf was a different texture than the milkweed and not immediately spit it out bitter but definitely somewhat bitter and seemed to get stronger. So I spit it out and the aftertaste that lingered several minutes was worse than chewing on the leaf. Not likely to try it again. :)

      @ReWildUniversity  2 роки тому +1

      So interesting! Okay, so we're learning a few things from your observations. There seems to be a correlation with the milkweeds being stressed and them getting reddish stems? The ones I've seen with red stems are in poor soil along the side of a building where it gets VERY hot -- I'm assuming that it's not an optimal environment for them. And you did a taste test! Sounds like your dogbane is definitely either having a different taste than ours, or there is some variation in how we perceive the tastes. Plus your dogbane, it sounds like, didn't have red in the stems! Fascinating! To me, the mostly likely thing is that we're seeing genetic variation or growth variations based on environment. And it seems that dogbane has a lot of ability to have those variations! Hopefully some other people will weigh in with their experiences. Thanks my friend!!!!

      @@ReWildUniversity there are 4 little milkweeds growing where I dug up the large one and so far they have green stems. Runs in mind (I need to check them out) that the dogbane gets redder stems a bit later in the season as it gets hotter.

    I've never heard of these plants before. "Dogbane" not occurred here at all; "Milkweed" ("Klejicha" in my language) is an invasive species, luckily with relatively rare occurance. (I did wikipedia research :) Too special for me this time, I guess, but it's interesting and pleasure to watch.

    • @ReWildUniversity
      @ReWildUniversity  2 роки тому +1

      Hi Martin!
      Yes, I think dogbane is native over in the US and not present in Europe, and I've heard from others that the common milkweed is over there, but as you say it's considered invasive and actively controlled. So probably not easy to find . . .

    I have a patch I have been protecting in yard that I'm almost sure is dog bane. Some butterflies,bees and flies appreciate it. I'm going to go look it over using your suggestions. Not sure I will taste but who knows? If I do I will post a comment with my findings. Many Blessings to you all.

    thanks for sharing your experience on foraging, I never tried milkweed even though we have some here, I thought it was toxic.
    do they have great nutritional value like stinging neetle for example?

      We love cherries too! So delicious! You know, I'm not actually sure about the nutritional content. My "intuition" is that it's nutritious, but not at nettle levels =) I don't have any experience with what species you have over in Europe -- the species I'm referencing here is Asclepias syriaca. It would be neat to hear what species you're seeing over there!

      we have I think 2 different species of milkweed in France, asclepiade syriasca and asclepiade tuberosa.
      they are forbidden to sell on our territory by law since 2018 due to their invasive nature. it's not forbidden to have some in your garden but you can't buy or sell some..
      there's maybe other species have that I am not aware of.

      Hmmm. I suppose that depends on the definition. Fast food? No. Things like Hostess offerings? No. A pint of Ben and Jerry's once in a while? Yes. Dark chocolate? Yes. Trying to think of the junky-est thing I have eaten recently. I guess that would be some Ben and Jerry's Phish Food we had shared as a family three weeks ago. I think you may have it -- I heard from a friend that it's in France, at least. It seems that it's considered an invasive over there, so it may be difficult to find as people may be trying to eradicate it.
