  • Normal flight over a park near Dayton, Ohio when things went wrong. Sent drone out about 900 feet and executed a return to home. Traveled back about 400 feet, lost gps and home position and rapidly ascended by itself. I Was able to regain control, take some neighborhood video and started descending to bring home, all was going well until motors took over and rapidly ascended the drone and then without warning, the motors just stopped. The drone plunged over 300 feet reaching speeds of almost 70 Mph on its fall. It fell safely into a field and I was able to retrieve it. Amazingly, after a power cycle, it flew again but the gimbal was broken. Sent back to DJI for a warranty replacement.

    We are sorry for what happened with the drone. Please take note that, if the unit is within the standard warranty period, we can forward an investigation request, and data analysis can be applied to determine its cause. After which, an offer depending on the results will be sent to you. Rest assured that this will be taken care of and handled accordingly. We appreciate your understanding and support.

      I appreciate the response. I did have DJI care on it and I filed a claim and sent the drone in. I know DJI does quality work and that this is probably just a fluke. Lookin forward to flying my replacement very soon.

    Ok I think I may have an idea 💡 what may have happened...
    First thing, when you first loose video feed, before it goes into auto RTH, you do realise you still have stick control and your drone will react to your stick inputs!
    If you play back the flight I think you can put the stick overlays on the display to check, you may have hit up and also the gimbal was all over the place!
    Also there is a Combination Stick Command to stop the motors in an emergency, I'm just wondering if you panicked and inadvertently activated both sticks in and down or in and out?🤔

      I have the flight log with the stick inputs overlay turned on. I’m trying to find a program that will allow me to overlay that video in to the actual flight video. Will upload as soon as I figure it out.

    The downward sensors failed, it thought its was close to the ground, tried to gain height and stopped the motors as a safety measure, if you catch it when landing it can happen too, the sensor recognizes your hand as the ground and tries to fly up at full speed

    Glad you got it back it is a shame about the gimbal. I am curious when it dropped was that the maximum altitude you had set? Or did you have your max altitude set lower then that and the drone carried on climbing? It is also nice to see DJI support replied in the comment section below. Keep us posted on what DJI informs you about the cause of the malfunction.

    • @andman433
      @andman433  5 місяців тому

      Maximum legal altitude is 400 ft so that’s what I had it set for. I still don’t understand how or why is climbed as fast as it did and was unresponsive to my controls. A Facebook post I made mentioned something about an updraft, so I guess that’s a possibility, but not sure.

      Sounds more like it had a disconnection from the controller or gps, but if set right, it should have returned to home in that scenario hopefully you can be in the air again soon dji will look at the flight logs to see what went wrong and get you sorted 👍

    Can't think what happened to loose control, unless there was some microwave transmission nearby. But was wondering if you had a small chip of magnetic material that jammed in between the armature and stator, causing one motor to lock up. This would cause a flip and shut the other motors off. Luckily it was a mini with the weight of a pack of Doritos. Wonder if DJI's investigation will highlight anything. I had a small chip in my mini3pro that was a devil to extract as it just kept reattaching. All the Best Dave

      Do you use airdata uav as that would give you an idea what had happened. Kp index might of been too high or Mist could of been at fault messing with your belly sensors on drone. I was flying my mini 4 pro and in the same conditions and all of a sudden I could see the Mist drawing in and my sensors on the rc2 was going nuts at about 80 meters in hight and had to drop altitude quickly. Could of been a bird strike on your drone, with the way it moved and flipped upside down

    There is a setting for what it’s supposed to do in an auto return or signal loss. In that setting, you can specify what you want to return to home to be so, I have a feeling when it lost signal it defaulted to that return to home height and in that panic you put both sticks down and in which turned off the motors. If you go back and look at the flight in the DJI Fly or DJI Go app, you can also look and see what the sticks were doing during the whole flight. Trust me, it happens to the best of us! I had my Spark, in 2019, lose connection and it ran into a water tower lol 😂. I had to get a guy to climb the water tower to get it.

      I’ve looked at my whole flight on the log, and the peculiar thing is once it lost its return to home GPS lock, it also lost its ability to know what its altitude was when I was bringing it down. The altitude started at zero, and then, as I was descending it, the altitude actually went into the negatives.

    You pointed out that you had your thumbs down, trying to regain control........in normal flight this would mean the drone would be flying backwards, which in this instance would have meant it was flying backwards and down away from you, which isnt whats seen in the video. Also, the emergency motor shut off positions are both thumbs down, and to the right or left. Im thinking that you accidentally held the shut off position long enough for the motors to shut off.

    • @andman433
      @andman433  4 місяці тому

      The drone was holding position and I had the left thumb stick down descending the drone. Right thumb was off the stick totally. The drone started rapidly ascending while I had the thumb stick down. That’s what perplexes me so much.

    • @mrbrent62
      @mrbrent62 3 місяці тому

      I was thinking that too. That emergency shutdown was accidentally initiated. I don't have that enabled for that reason. I have watched a video where an older Phantom 2 lost control and was flying off... but the guy managed to gain control and bring it back.

    Sorry for the loss of your drone but it looks like a possible case of pilot error. In the excitement you possibly held both control knobs in down position which shut the motors off as it is designed to do. Should have RTH immediately at first sign of signal loss.

    • @rjbishop12
      @rjbishop12 4 місяці тому +1

      Strongly disagree... you must have both sticks down and inward to disarm the motors. He clearly did not have the sticks in that position, otherwise the drone would have been yawing and rolling all simultaneously.

    Hard to assess what your drone was doing without the screenshot not present. I'm thinking pilot-error because you should have attempted to land the moment the trouble started. Good luck with your next drone. If your app crashes or your drone disconnects, there is usually something wrong. Usually, drones rise to a set altitude when RTH is initiated. If you had pressed down on the down stick, the drone should have descended. Hmm?

    • @andman433
      @andman433  4 місяці тому

      Once it lost its home point, it rapidly ascended. I had hands off the remote when it was doing its RTH but once it lost that, I took back control. I scanned the horizon and continued bringing it back down manually until it ignored my commands and rapidly ascended and flipped over.
