I was anti gun right up until the moment I tried to stop 2 crooks from breaking into my Bicycle Shop.
Both turned and opened up on me. I dived behind my Nissan pickup truck and started thinking about what gun I would buy tomorrow, if I lived through tonight as bullets pinged through the Nissan and broken glass rained down.
My wife, my son and myself ALL have conceal carry permits.
We own multiple handguns and a Shotgun my father left me.

you don't get 'desensitized' to guns. if anything you become more aware of them and the responsibility of their usage. BUT you DO become more confident in their usage as you get used to being around them. as you train more you learn how to handle them properly, how to care for them (cleaning and stuff), how to properly store them, how to learn when it's legal to use them, and what advantages and disadvantages each model has for given situations. it's a tool, similar to a car, or table saw, or volt meter... the more you know how it operates and how to properly use it, the better you become at it's use. how did you feel the first time you got behind the wheel of a car, or the first time you picked up a circular saw, ect.? being nervous and scared when you're inexperienced is normal. that changes over time when you gain experience.
just an fyi: more people are killed in car wreaks then ALL gun deaths combined... should we now ban all vehicles?? and once you take out gun violence committed by criminals (like gang shootings or illegal guns used in robberies) and self-deletions with guns, there is almost no gun violence per capita... so all the fear mongering is completely unfounded...
Additionally, getting rid of guns in a country doesn't mean getting rid of all violence in that country... In the UK alone, you are having a KNIFE violence epidemic... are you going to start banning knives now?? no one is allowed to own a knife anymore unless you can prove to the government that you won't use it in violence and have to have a special license... like only chefs at 3 star (and up) restaurants... how stupid that sounds. when people misuse a tool for violence, you punish the person that misused the tool, not take the tool away from the rest of society.
and as far as letting children use guns. you teach a child how to properly use a tool with supervision. you don't ban children from learning how to drive a car until they are 21 then just throw them out on the streets in a car and say "good luck"... you teach them how to drive with an adult and give them chances to gain experience as they grow. same with guns. you teach them and give them changes to use that tool in a supervised environment so that they gain experience. then once they become an adult, they have the experience to properly use that tool.
now, saying all that, EVERY death of an innocent person (for ANY reason) due to violence is horrible. BUT stats show that when a law abiding citizen who is armed is VERY effective of stopping or quickly ending a criminal shooting people. AND there are MANY MORE times that an armed citizen PREVENTED violence (any kind) from happening each year. Even MORE than the amount of violent events that actually happen each year... so there would possibly be more than TWICE as many events of violence happening if it weren't for armed citizens....
one more fact. surveys of gun owners show that regular citizens that own guns train just as much each year as police, so why would people feel 'safe' around armed police and 'unsafe' around armed citizens when they train similar amounts each year???

Yeah the details of the definition matter. Just being emotionally sensitive to the subject is not a useful thing at all. But it is very useful to be sensitive to the potential of the machine [and user] and the need for proper handling to provide multiple layers of hazard mitigation. @MrJest2 7 місяців тому +6

Violence is very much a cultural phenomenon. If I waved my magic wand and transported every firearm in the US to Japan, neither nation's murder rate would appreciably change. In the US, firearm suicides would necessarily drop, but the overall _rate_ of suicide would remain stable. Likewise, in Japan there would be a slight uptick in accidents, and the "suicide by firearm" would increase - but again, the overall _rate_ of suicides in general wouldn't budge much at all (I point out "suicide", because for most of the history of firearms the majority of "firearm deaths" are suicides. This has been the case since the matchlock era of firearm development - a pretty consistent rate hovering around 60% of overall fatalities).
In the US, despite the "if it bleeds it leads" media focus and hysteria, as long as you remain out of certain situations and, to a certain extent, small isolated regions of major cities, it's generally safer here than most European countries. Outside of "criminal-on-criminal" homicides, the second most common cause of a murder is an abusive romantic/family relationship. Random violence - lethal or not - is extremely rare.
Fun fact - The "four rules to avoid being murdered", from most impactful to least, are:
      1) Don't be a criminal, or associate with criminals
      2) Don't use illegal substances, or associate with those who do
      3) Don't tolerate an abusive relationship of any kind and leave _immediately_ if *any* violence occurs
      4) Be aware of your surroundings and avoid "the bad parts of town".
Number four is way, way down in terms of odds, and is just common sense. It's also the least important factor by far.

No machine guns in this video. In some states, what is shown in the video might be classified as an "assault rifle." The definitions of which vary state by state. However, in some US jurisdictions, you can legally buy a machine gun. It requires a LOT of money and an application process through the federal Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco Firearms and Explosives. And actual military grade machine guns on the used market (which tend to be older obsolete ones) will run easily into the $30,000 range at the low end. Due to many states locally outlawing their possession, the federal requirements to obtain one and the cost prohibitive nature of buying one, they are extremely uncommon in private hands - but not completely unheard of.

One of my biggest regrets is not finishing boy scouts. So I left to focus on my studies and myself. My younger brother made me proud when he finished it completely.
If your able to as a kid its a great experience that will teach you sooo much. I miss the camping and cooking over a nice warm fire pit. Learning various skills like how to navigate a map or use a compass, what poison ivy looks like, what berries to eat or not, how to whittle with a carving knife, how to set up a tent, how to start a campfire, how to track animals, what to do if a wild bear comes through your camp at night, how to tie knots, how to canoe or kyak, how to swim, how to turn river water into clean drinking water, how to do 1st aid, among many more cool survival skills. Its also just a great way to stay in shape and appreciate the outdoors. I was never a big fan of hiking but going out with my cub scout troop to do it was fun.

Actually, hearing it often inspires others throughout the area to do a little target shooting themselves… no gun range required outside if the city limits. It’s also Fall hunting season right now so many of the locals are in gun mode.😆

One thing I gotta say is indoor ranges kind of suck, especially for new shooters, because of the louder noise. I think the best experience for a first-time shooter is to take them to a private outdoor range with just the shooter and the instructor present. It's a lower stress environment with less distractions.
Edit: I realize that's not available everywhere, but if you guys do want to handle and fire some guns on a trip out to the US, I'd recommend trying to set something like that up rather than going to a potentially busy and noisy public range. I'm a bit bothered by that very first clip. As someone who has always had guns in my life, I would never have a person who is not comfortable/somewhat experience with shooting, shoot a gun using only one hand. The person who is there is not instructing them on the proper way to hold the gun. You don't hold your arm with the other hand your other hand should be under the gun, so you are holding the gun with two hands. I would always tell new shooters to use a two hand grip until they are comfortable with the "kick" of whatever weapon they are shooting. Yeah I know it's a small thing.. but guns are deadly weapons not toys and they should ALWAYS be treated as such, even when your "just" shooting in a range. There are several rules for handling guns and they should never ever be ignored for any reason.

Now, this was reinterpreted by the courts (about a century ago) to still apply to American citizens, despite the militias being dissolved and absorbed into the National Guard... But it was the original reasoning behind the amendment.
EDIT: There was a point to this, and yes, it was a bit facetious. I'm a supporter of the Second Amendment. Private gun ownership, throughout most of America's history, was not an assured right. At all. That came much later. I think some people fear that acknowledging that fact might impact the tenor of discussions about unlicensed gun ownership in the U.S. I don't think it would, as it's still based on a reasonable legal theory. At the gun show I'm sure the people who said that they "hoped" someone would enter the building and attempt to commit a gun crime were being facetious. In other words, they were saying anybody would be a fool going in there because everybody is armed and capable of shooting back. They weren't literally saying oh boy oh boy my chance to get in some live action tactical training. 🙄 I'm confident that Shaun understood this, but deceptively misconstrued what those people meant. Also, "desensitized"?? What he REALLY meant was, gun owners are a bunch of murderer wannabes and the very act of shooting a gun is synonymous with devaluing human life. Thanks a lot, Shaun, you just slandered damn near half the country as violent criminals. Keep in mind that we have been teaching our children in most states since we were colonies for both hunting and protection. When my family moved from New York to New Jersey, one of the first things my father did was get his gun license because just to buy a BB gun you needed that license. Well it came and a short time after, he bought a pistol then he bought a BB gun and set up a small range in our basement. My father taught me to shoot there, but he wasn't giving me big targets to aim at. He gave me soda cans and pencils.
I got to college and was recruited to join the rifle team. Eventually, I enlisted in the army where I held a expert grade with most of the weapons I was given.
Going shooting is alot of fun when you're with the right people.

I've been around guns since I was little. Hell, I had my "own" (technically my parents owned it, but it was MY gun) .22LR single shot rifle when I was 5. And even now, I have a decent personal collection, just recently added a reproduction 1847 Colt Walker black powder revolver to my collection. And from that young age, I had it pounded into my head the necessary safety do's and donts, as well as just what it is I am handling and what it can do if used incorrectly. It's because of this that I have developed a healthy respect for them and what they are. But one thing I have never become is "desensitized" to them as he said. I have the utmost respect for them for what they are and what they can be used for. But they are inanimate objects, a tool. It is the person wielding it that decides what it will be used to do. A gun can be used to protect, or just plink at paper targets, but it can also be used to cause malicious harm. Just as a hammer can be used to smack in a nail, it can just as easily be turned to being used to attack someone. The guy in the video seemed to go into it with a set mindset that "guns are bad and will always be bad" and it negatively impacted his experience. Plus, the range officer there should have properly coached him on proper form. First time shooter, shooting a large handgun one handed? There's no control there, and it's just asking for a bad experience.
I carry a handgun on me, and have it close by at all times. Not because I want to use it, in fact if I never have to use it on another person in my lifetime I will die happy. But, I'd rather have it and never need to use it, than to need it and die/get severely injured wishing I'd had it. It's a given just for the fact of being alive, to have the right of self preservation.
I will say that if you are ever interested in shooting a gun of any kind, start out small, like a .22LR because it's small, light, and has very little kick. It's a perfect caliber to get the basics of safe handling down. Also, try not to go do a busy indoor range. Being indoors makes things extremely loud and cramped feeling, and will add to your anxiousness. Try to set it up to be a controlled environment where you are able to just take a second to gather your thoughts, believe me it will make your experience better.
But hey, that's just my American point of view on the matter. Sorry for the rant.

See, when I was a child in Texas, my dad made a point to teach me and my siblings about gun safety. We had a rifle in the house, and knew where it was and how to get at it if we ever needed it, but also were taught from as early as I can remember to NEVER touch it, if we were not at a shooting range or in a life-and-death situation. And every time there was a story about someone being irresponsible with a gun and shooting themselves or a friend, my dad would bring my brothers and I into the living room, and read the article to us. Then he'd say, "That is why you do not play with guns. Guns are not toys. Always treat them like they're loaded. Never point them at someone unless you're meaning to shoot them, and never shoot at someone unless you mean to kill them." Because of that, my siblings and I have never even THOUGHT about playing with guns. Oh, we might go to the shooting range on occasion, and shooting our guns down range is fun, but we always remember gun safety. If someone is ahead of the line of fire, even if they're way off to the side? Safety goes on, finger moves away from the trigger, and the gun gets pointed down and at an angle. You never hold the gun in a direction where the barrel could pass by someone, even if the safety is on, the clip is out, and you "know" there's no bullet in the chamber. And those are just the basics.
The point of teaching people about guns is not to make it so that they are no longer worried about what their gun can do. It is to make them aware of what it can do, so that they treat it with as much respect as possible, and don't accidentally take a life with a gun.

Others have said it, but I'll repeat it for emphasis: A gun is a tool, nothing more, but nothing less. If you're using one at a range, it is no more dangerous than a chainsaw or table saw. Treat it with respect, not fear, and grasp it firmly, as you would a drill. If it's a rifle, seat the stock snugly against your shoulder, and lean slightly into it. Leaning back out of nervousness won't end well, so commit to taking the shot, don't half-ass it, the way most Euros are inclined to do.
Start with something in the .22 to .32 range, if you want to dip your toes, but a 9mm isn't hard to control, and once you're used to it, shooting a .45 isn't particularly difficult. Skip shotguns, unless it's a .410, though, they can punch your shoulder some, especially if you don't snug that stock up proper. They're tools, not the mechanical equivalent of Taz from Loony Tunes.

When asked why a person needs a gun, the best answer is this..."When seconds count, the cops are minutes away [at best]." People who are not used to guns for whatever reason always have this idea or notion that guns are only used for bad intentions...like murder, and stuff like that, right? Well, most law-abiding gun owners know for a fact they only use their guns for the protection of themselves, family, friends, and their property. And if someone would say that you, the gun owner, values their own stuff more than the life of the thief, to that I woukd say, no, the thief values my stuff more than he values his own life. So basically guns, when used the right way, are to protect life and property. Without property rights, you might as well be living in a Communist shithole.

If we hear gun shots in rural areas, we think nothing of it. We think, "Oh, John's son must be shooting the new 22 he got for Xmas", or "Sounds like somebody is doing some squirrel hunting." or "Joe and his wife are target practicing." We never give it a second thought, because it isn't a tragedy, it's safe handling of guns. That's why a lot of us hate others telling us how to live. You wrote, "Besides, guns are used WAY MORE MANY times to stop a violent crime such as rape or murder than they are to harm someone. FACT." (way more many?).... Except that's not factual at all, and statistics actually show that it's the exact opposite. Well over half of gun deaths are people accidentally shooting themselves, or a friend or family member, accidentally. Guns stopping crimes is extremely rare. While we hear about the ones that are successful (where they kill or disable the attacker), this doesn't happen very often. Like, at all. And there are several examples of the would-be defender accidentally hitting civilians, instead of the attacker. Which, in a state of panic, sort of makes sense. Most people carrying around a gun are not ultra-practiced, like some are, but gun enthusiasts who go to range like once a year.

It's actually a little more common than we realize. I knew that the Czechs, though it's overly complex practicality wise, are being allowed to buy guns for self defense. Germans can also own guns, the Swedes and others. No one ever mentions them, but their laws and restrictions are kind of weird and much of it is unnecessary. But, it's their country, not ours.

My hubby has 3 guns...locked in gun safe.. But now government is trying to stop pur 2nd amendment rights with very high ammunition costs and lots of stuff put on the manufacturers of ammunition. They are NOT toys.. but neither is a car. Folks in the pulse would have had a chance if anyone inside had a gun.

Firearms are tools. Just like tools they can be dangerous if used improperly.

Firearms are not tools. They are weapons with only one purpose, to kill.

@@reindeer7752 that's really not correct. shotguns can be used to fire flares for instance. in general, guns can be used to strike a target at a distance for whatever purpose that might be such as shooting out a light creating a diversion making a loud noise so a rescue party can find you breaching a locked door in an emergency situation like fire rescue etc. and of course these uses leave to one side shooting for recreation and decoration (gun collectors who put rare firearms on display, for instance).

Starter guns, 22 blank firing guns, signal guns, rope launching guns, grappling hook guns, disposing of boom from a safe distance - and those are the ones off the top of my head and not one of them is to kill. Hence my saying you don't know firearms.@@reindeer7752

My wife and I went to a fully automatic indoor shooting range while on vacation for her birthday a couple of years ago and shot a full auto H&K MP5, it was great fun, and a great way to blow $175 in 15 minutes, which included rental of the MP5 and 120 rounds of ammo. The place had a selection of various fully automatic guns with rental rates starting at $75 for a beat up old AK47, ranging up to over $200 for a classic Thompson submachinegun, as I recall the MP5 was about $115, plus extra ammo. Note fully automatic machine guns are highly regulated in the US, anyone without a criminal background can buy a semi automatic version of something like an AK47 for under $1,000 (maybe under $500 used), but a fully automatic model will cost upwards of $15,000, have a $700 federal tax stamp and require a special federal license that often takes over 6 months to process, includes a background check, and requires a letter of recommendation from a local head law enforcement officer (Sheriff, Chief of Police, etc.), and even after all that can only be legally fired at a licensed full automatic gun range.

I learned to shoot in the Boy Scouts. I was probably 11 years old, and earned the Merit Badge I was going after.
Like most comments have mentioned, it comes down to respecting the firearm as the dangerous tool it is; ALWAYS being aware of the responsibilities you accept by picking one up; and practicing enough to not be more of a danger to yourself than to any threat you face.

My dad learned to shoot at an early age but mostly for hunting and he was in the National Guards when he and my mom were first married. I've shot guns my daughter was in ROTC in highschool and her uncle taught her to shoot. Her I wouldn't want to make her mad cause she's a great shot. Guns don't kill it's the person behind the gun wether it's an accident or someone with bad intentions.
