I love watching dave work on different guitars because he's a no nonsense or bullshit kinda guy and says what he thinks. Most of all though his videos are very informative and the repetitive nature of the work that he does is proof that guitars are relatively simple machines but require experience and a real knowledge of how everything works together to get one to play just right. Even though they're a relatively simple concept there are alot of variables. I've learned alot watching you dave, I've watched for like almost 5 years now and I never get bored...I'd actually ship you one of my guitars from Vancouver just to have you work on it and hopefully see it on a video!...and some folks might not know this about the man but alot of the work he does, especially for young and struggling musicians, he does as a favor to them because as he said in one video he remembers what it was like to be young and broke....you're a good man dave...
I played fretless in college, we had a jazz workshop (NY) got to meet and play with some real heavyweights! Then I got offered a job in a rock band and had to SING HARMONY!! Goodbye fretless! Now I'm retired, no more band, just jammin'. Hello fretless again! I just love the nuance of tone. And Dave, I concur, Bill Lawrence pickups are 'da kind!!
The Pow Pharaoh fingerboard looks alright with the three color sunburst. Kinda reddish, but that's ok. I'm thinking of getting a Player Jazz fretless, which would look a lot like this. I'd have to replace the white pick guard that comes on it with a tortoise shell, like this one.
Swell job Dave!!! I'm looking to do the same thing to my same Bass. I'm looking for the real guy to do the work like you, expertise like you. But I live here in Largo, Florida
The Gooch of Christmas past must have stepped in and adjusted stuff ... Stay tuned for new tuna's :-) Are you going to do some more cooking vids Dave? I not stopped using my air fryer since you demonstrated crispy chicken wings.
Did you save the section of the movie that shows how you set the neck angle correctly? It looks like a pitch to get just right. We would love to see it!
So you didn't oil and clean the new neck fretboard, and after setting the actions and nut you didn;t reset the intonation that will be out of adjustment.... Nice....
Pretty sure that he did oil it (off camera) there is a distinct color change from the first look at the neck to when he shows it with the tuners installed.
He clearly said he would do the instonation off camera because we have seen it before. He clearly said the board was dry. Did you comment without watching the whole video?

Hello. Did you put a thin object between the neck and body to compansate the string height diffrence that caused by fret height? Or did you just assembled the neck straight on body?
I’m sorry I haven’t finished watching the video so maybe Dave mentioned; and maybe this is a stupid question, but why would someone buy a neck without frets instead of removing the existing frets out of the current neck and filling the holes in with resin?
I bought 2 squire basses, a jazz & a precision with intent of doing the jaco route. Yanking the frets & epoxy fill. Guitarist friends talked me out of it citing it'd mess with the truss rod. Glad I didn't and lucked into a fretless the month covid hit. I just learned how to shim the neck from Dave, so I can get the action lower. I've been playing well for 30 yrs. Thought I'd ace it. It's a bitch to learn, even with the fret marks & dots LOL. Really struggling with it.
Yes ,but there is some genuine physics here ,or is it geometry ? A fret creates a clean 'break' angle so nothing hampers the free vibes downrange to the bridge . Just finger stopping lessens that to almost nothing so damping /rubbing the string down range from the stop is a reality . I adjust Double Basses which have gone muddy --all due to insufficient break angle from the finger stop and zero neck relief . Same for Precision/Jazz jobbies . Try it . Peace Yes and I do work hard -only watching silliness on UTUBE during tea breaks . Jonny
Why adjust the bridge before filing down the nut slots? Did you just forget? Oh, those nut-height doo-dahs look useful, but what if it's a rounded fingerboard? Do they tie-over and stay bent?
Dave, I love your videos but here lately you have started to jump cut so much that we miss almost all the work you are doing. You may assume that we have seen something hundreds of times and that may be true but with your commentary, ever action is unique. I really enjoy your older stuff with the step by step fixes. I know you are doing the work so just let the camera run and entertain us with your jokes.
He could of gotten an Warmoth Neck very close to the same price and with a nut and dirlled for the existing tuners... Amazing how a little research can be beneficial...
Fretless basses need more string relief and height than the fretted to prevent muddy and dull notes . Really thought you would have know that .Maybe you don't . This bass might play ok now but in a month will sound like a pile of crap . Fun times ahead . Peace

This is a procedure that should be common if only a fretless jazz neck was an option for precision basses.
sdushdiu you can put a fretless j neck on a p
@@jonmuir13 I know you can. But, as noted in the video, it is not a simple exchange as Fender could make it if they standardized the bolt arrangement.
@@jonmuir13 Similarly, Squier could make the fretless Jazz neck available for the P bass or simply offer it as an option - neither of which they do.
A luthier should be able to pull the frets and inlay some wood to fill the gap if a fretless replacement isn't available.
