Dude! I am very impressed with your build. You did everything right in my opinion. The motors mounted high up to avoid damage, and it adds to air cooling. Great wheels also ,for smooth travel on all terrain. We are alike in the fact that I am 63 and still playing! I still surf and play music ,skate,bike , and whatever else I want to do. Great job! Damn you could be right in there with the rest of the e-board builders. The fiberglass cover ,very cool.Congrats, wish I had one lol. Peace bro...
Thanks man! Mainly built the eboard due to hip surgery. I was unable to kiteboard for 6 months as I recovered. My esk8 kept me sain and tuned in while I recovered plus it's tons of fun to ride. You've got me by a few years but kudos to you for doing what you love! Hope to be there when I'm 63. Lol. Cheers!

Very Nice Build. I have built so many RC Cars and buggies and this is exactly the same thing. A decade ago, battery tech wouldn't allow you to use a skateboard sized arrangement. Now we a boom of boards! SO COOL. NOW I WANT TO BUILD ONE. =)

Hey Jeff, Thanks and glad to help. Important: Make sure all the electrical connections match, it will make things much easier. If you order the mechanical kit from Scramboards make sure the inside diameter of the motor gear is the same as motor shaft as they come in different sizes. Also, Scramboard motor mounts didn't fit the MBS trucks I had so had to use Trampa Infinity trucks which worked well with the motor mounts. Check around for the best prices, eBay, amazon etc. Links below are a good place to start.

how did you get the lead acid battery tester to work with lipo battery?

Have you got the parts list please.
You said your were having trouble with your connectors lining up. That is because they can melt a little bit and shift while soldering. What I do is I plug in the connector to another one before soldering. That keeps them aligned.
t0ny747 Thanks for the tip my friend! What I meant by the connectors not lining up is there are so many different styles and sizes of connectors that I would often have to alter the original to fit or line up with other connectors. Btw I assume you are a pilot? Very cool vintage planes on your videos!
@@foilsurf I am just talking about connectors of the same type like XT60 or Deans. If the connetors melt and get out of alignment it can be hard to plug and unplug them.
I am not a pilot yet but I have recently started work on getting my private pilot license. I am a volunteer at the Warhawk Air Museum.
I'm just imagine having one it would make traveling into town more easily

Great video! Best tutorial I've seen so far. You did a great job...I'm currently researching to build one for my self...just don't know if I should go regular longboard or mountain board with pneumatic tyres. I will be mainly cruising around the street.

Aaron Janzen Turnigy 6374 192kv. Got them from HobbyKing. I think they were around $70 each at that time but not sure exactly.

Hi I really like your build. The simplicity of it is great. I had a few questions. 1)Why did you use a lipo vs the 18650 batteries that everyone seems to use? 2)How is your range? 3)Would you change anything? Great build!
Richard Rhinehart I believe the 18650 lithium-ion batteries are less expensive so that's probably why they are more popular. The lipo batteries, from what I understand, provide more power so that's why I went with them. No, I wouldn't change to 18650. My range is approximately 9 miles.
great build. can you detail exactly how you made the enclosure please, what products you used exactly, how many layers of resin and cloth, etc...
i would love to make an enclosure as well.
Hi Genis, I used polyester resin and fiberglass cloth. About 10 layers total of 4 and 6oz cloth but you can also use fiberglass mat or epoxy resin also. Just keep piling up layers wetting each layer with resin, rolling and squeegeeing out the bubbles as you go. If you mess up just add more glass and resin and lots of sanding. Look at my kiteboard repair video ua-cam.com/video/Lu8fnOLxcaw/v-deo.html and adapt that technique to the mold. Have lots of acetone on hand to clean up the mess and trim excess glass with utility knife/razor when the resin sets up slightly but not totally cured. There will be much less sanding. Then paint the enclosure with water based arts/craft paint then put one more layer of 4oz cloth and resin over that to protect the paint from chipping.
One other thing. Polyester resins will dissolve some types of styrofoam so test it first. If it does use epoxy resin instead.

Shane F Thanks man! First I would check out eSk8. www.electric-skateboard.builders/ Just about every question that has been asked has been answered on that forum. That community is extremely helpful and will answer all your questions. Then decide how much you are willing to spend. You will find a wide range of parts at different price points. Go with the highest quality you can afford. Many electric skate companies sell complete kits. That may be the way to go for you. Although it may be more expensive , it takes the guess work out of what works and what doesn't. Good luck!

Awesome Warren! Yes I changed only the rear truck to Trampa infinity truck because the motor mounts I used didn't fit the MBS truck. Love the board. Ride it nearly every day.... when there is no wind of course ;) Good luck on your build

Hi Paul, I made the board a while ago so component costs have increased since then. I would guess it would cost $500-$600 or more just for the electronics and mechanical parts. You should easily be able to build it yourself and customize as desired. There are many videos and parts suppliers online to help you. Lmk how it goes.

I noticed you had a battery percentage indicator on the board. How did you go about achieving this? Is is simply programmed to read the voltage directly from the battery and display the percentage accordingly, or did use a BMS (battery management system) with your batteries?
Hi Will, The battery capacity indicator has a setting where you select your battery type. There is a button on the back you hold down before connecting battery. Connect battery then toggle thru settings. Check out the pics in the link. Where did you get the wheels from? I'm looking from some quality all terrain wheels and haven't been able to find many. And did you get the gears that are attached to the wheels from somewhere as well or are they custom made?
The wheels are Trampa wheels but I got all mechanical parts, wheels, pulleys, belts, motor brackets from Scramboards. You can buy it from them as a kit. www.scramboards.com/conversion-kits/kit-4-mechanical-drive-train-brackets-parts-kit.html8
Really great job there!! great to see somebody using fibreglass too, such an underused product, whats the range on those batteries, looks like you could use a little more battery?
knoxieman Thanks man! I get a range of around 8-9 miles on flat terrain/pavement. Less distance off-road. Yeah could probably bump up the batteries to 2/6s=12s total but keeping costs reasonable was one of the reasons I went with the two 5s=10s total. But I'm satisfied with the performance as is.

So I went to home depot and I was looking at this fiberglass because of your video and the guy there told me to buy both the Cloth and the Mat - He said if i did the mat first and then the cloth it would make it stronger... the mat just looked like the cloth except it was just randomly woven and intertwined - not sure if that is legit but he was like ya look it up on UA-cam lol - so here I am again trying to decide if I need to buy both looking at videos on UA-cam although yours looks just fine to me - have you found that it is pretty bullet proof? I have kydex too - I was just looking at doing this because I didn't get my oven element for a non food oven until just now. Thanks for making this video :) and responding to so many of us!

Big Kids Hi, Yes you can use fiberglass mat and cloth. It's actually easier to build up thickness using the mat then, if you do a color or design, cover it with one final layer of 4oz fiberglass cloth to protect the design from getting beat up. I used all cloth because I have quite a bit left over from my surfboard building days. Cloth is probably a little harder to work with. Both methods are plenty strong as there is not much force on the enclosure. Just be sure to build up a number of layers as I show in the vid. So yes the HD guy gave good advice.

Hey flysurf! Awesome build! I just came across your video and instantly knew I was about to make my own. I haven't seen any new comments so I've spent a couple of months looking thru tutorials and finally made my way back to yours. I see comments like "do your research" so Ive been hesitant asking your opinion. But after seeing the thousand different ways to make these id rather know if you would do anything differently. What parts last and what parts are headaches? And do you still enjoy it? Hope you still ck these comments and thank you for your time!
JJ FURGERSON Hey JJ, Awesome I could be of help. Wouldn't change much. There are some new technology ESC's so that would be something I'd look at. Still riding. Only problem I had was a defective VESC which I replaced. Adding a battery charger port would also be something that would be cool to have. My build requires removing the batteries and connecting them to a charger, so you can see the benefit of a charging port. Good luck on your build!
Hey! Glad to hear from you. Those turnigy motors had me a lil concerned, (these motors are currently out of stock) good to know you're still happy with them. I saw some builds with an electric scooter charger and port. I believe they had lithium ion batteries. Would you recommend using those over the lipos? It looks like taking batteries out to charge and balance charge would be a huge hassle. Thx again!
JJ FURGERSON Each battery has its advantages. Lithium ion probably less expensive, lipos last longer and I believe are suppose to be safer, less chance of a fire. Either way stick with higher quality batteries.
Will do. I see Jenns etox site using chains alot. What's your take on the chain drives vs a belt drive? In my research it seems that chain components are easier to get.. Still difficult tho. Lol
JJ FURGERSON Personally I like belts. Lighter, quieter, inexpensive easy to adjust and easy to come by.
wanna get a kit but can't find anything only for a full setup of battery motor with controller want to get a board with a style i like instead of tsome of the per put to gether one i have been seeing if some one could help me out with this it would be awesome.

88Nikoli Gear ratio is 6-1. 12 teeth on small gear, 72 teeth on large gear. For dimensions on the belt I'm using just google this HTD415-5M

Hey Flysurf, love the design thanks for sharing! If I were to use 2 8,000mAh batteries instead of the 5,000's you're using how much more distance do you think I could achieve?
Ben Seward Wow! That's a lot of juice! I would just be guessing because so many factors involved but if it were on my board I'd guess 12-14 miles? I'm sure there is a formula to figure that out.
Why not add an eternal port for a backpack array. You could easily put 4 to 8 of those same LiPos in a backpack and have a lead with a breakaway connection from the backpack to the power system on the board for 40 mile rides...
i think 40miles on such a board would be pretty exhausting, and this is about fun after all :)

I already owned the mountainboard so if you need a board that would be additional $$ depending on the board you will be using. As far as distance, I can go around 9 miles on pavement. A few miles less if off-roading.

Karthik Onteddu i disconnect the batteries from my board and connect to an iMax B6 AC V2 balance charger with a parallel charging board. If you're not familiar with these just google search them. The parallel charging board allows me to charge all batteries simultaneously. Caution: there are a lot of cheap knockoff chargers out there. They could be dangerous and start a fire so stick with the original.

Mark Myers Thanks Mark! Wouldn't really change much. Just little tweaks here and there. An actual batter pack vs the individual lipo batteries I'm using would be nice but I was trying to keep the cost reasonable. The battery packs cost substantially more. Yes I've ridden both style boards. Both are super fun depending on how you like to ride. I like to just cruise around on the street with the option of off-road so that's why I went with the mountainboard.

Hi, I noticed you have the yellow dampers on the rear springs - did you use the same on the front? Are the yellows enough to keep it stable at higher speeds? I have a generic, non-DIY electric mountainboard with no dampers and it is hard to keep steady over 12mph. I thought about buying the reds or even blues.
Mark Myers Hi Mark, I had to use Trampa Infinity trucks on the rear because the MBS trucks that came with my board did not work with the Scramboard motor mounts I used. I kept the original MBS trucks on the front. The Trampa trucks work awesome. I've gone close to 20mph and they are rock steady. The looseness of the trucks are adjustable so if you need a more stable ride it's easy to tighten them up. I have them set at a medium ride.

Curious question about that controller. Does the throttle trim work? I just purchased 1 and am hoping it will. I've read good reviews on them that braking and throttle response is better. I've got no problem with my thumb throttle but wanna give that one a shot. Thanks in advance. Great setup!
Matthew McClain Hey Matthew, Thanks! Yes the throttle trim works perfectly. I found a setting that works for me so I just set it and leave it but the trim works well.
What Motors did you use? Have you had any issues with the VESC's burning out? If you have the means and the time we would appreciate a parts list.
David Weshenfelder Hey David, The motors are Turnigy 192kv- 6374. I did have a problem with one of the VESC. I was getting a DVR8302 error on the VESC chip. Without going into too much detail, it's a common error which causes the chip to burn out. I believe it was a faulty chip. Either way the company I purchased from would not warranty it so I purchased another VESC from a different vendor and have had no problems with it. I believe I was originally sold a refurbished VESC so be careful and make sure you purchase from a reputable company that guarantees their products. It was an expensive lesson. As far as a parts list, if you go thru the comment I pinned at the top you will find a complete parts list. There are a few other comments where I also posted parts lists.

Hello, I live in the mountains and have many hills to worry about. Would you suggest using brakes or will using motor brake be enough?
Eddie Malooly Hi, If you're using a VESC with two motors you might be able to program them to brake pretty hard going downhill but on flats it might not be so safe. Would probably throw u off if it brakes too hard. So I would guess the manual brake would be a better choice.
Question for you sir. I'm thinking about buying the Turnigy Aerosky 6374 motors I saw on your board for one of my builds. Wanted to get your opinion of those motors. Are they still working good for you? Would you recommend those motors? Thanks in advance.

How well can it start from standstill without sensored motors?
Martin K. Schröder Hi Martin, The gear ratio and adjustment on the wireless remote make it possible to get a smooth acceleration from a stop. I usually push off a time or two to get going but just to lessen the torque on the drive belt. But the sensorless motors work fine.
How much batteria you have and how long you can go on a charge? Mine does 900w peak with a single NTM 50-60 270kv .... However I believe it runs around 360w ,480w on average steady speed

isn't 2 motors overkill? seems like all i ever hear is people saying that one motor is sufficient because the motors don't bog down or somesuch
Caerbanog Interrupted One motor is fine to use. I prefer 2 motors because they control both wheels when accelerating, turning and braking. Makes it a safer ride. There is no excessive pull one way or the other. Imagine a car that had only one wheel that braked and accelerated. I don't think it would be as efficient.
Those are actually two 3 cell batteries. The 5.0 is the amps

Hey there, great video! I've got both a voltage indicator and a similar battery capacity indicator like yours. Do you find that the % from the capacity indicator is as accurate as the voltage alarm? Love your board!

Big Kids Hi Neil, The battery capacity indicator is fairly accurate. I compared it to the voltage indicator on my charger which is very accurate and although not exact it's close enough to give me an indication as to how much power I have remaining.

Hey Gary, I use an IMAX B6AC V2 balanced charger and a Parallel Charging Board so I can charge multiple batteries simultaneously. Hi, I use IMAX B6 AC charger with a parallel adapter which allows you to charge multiple battery packs simultaneously.
Does the dual vesc set up give you varying modes like eco, normal, and boost that are selectable by the remote?
Max Break Kind of. You can make the trigger remote control more sensitive on the fly which will make the board react faster/slower. But, all the motor output limits/adjustments are set when you program the VESC. You can alter how the motor will run there.

How far can u go on a charge and have taken it off roading uphills
salas random videos Hey man! I can go approximately 9 miles on flat pavement. Off-roading (hard packed dirt and grass) around 6-7 miles. Haven't tested it much on hills because I live in So Fla and it's pretty flat except for a few sloped bridges which it easily cruises up. If you want to go farther just use a couple 6s batteries instead of the 5s batteries I used and if you're in an area with hilly terrain you can always program your VESC to provide more climbing power. The VESC provides many options to customize it to your terrain.
