- A tribute to one of my favourite childhood actresses., Margaret Rutherford- first tribute in a series on British eccentrics. When I grow up I want to be just like her. Music by Ron Goodwin has been used before I know but it's such a great tune I couldn't help but use it again.

Ja sie ist in meinem Herzen auch unvergessen ,Miss Marple. Danke für das schöne Vdeo.................
I became a fan of Margaret Rutherford with the
movie "Murder, She Said". She has that old style purity of British Charm. She was a jewel at any age. The Four Miss Marple Films she made,
which I have all four. Agatha Christie wanted no one else to play the part of "Miss Jane Marple, except Margret. I just wish she had made more. She was also great in "The V.I.P's"
I guess, you are mistaken here: Agatha Christie (1890-1976) was absolutely not satisfied with Margaret Rutherford's appearance as Miss Marple which doesn't match the actual character in the books at all. - Beside this, they had a good friendship, Agatha Christie dedicated "The Mirror Crack'd" (1962) to Margaret Rutherford, which was produced for cinema in 1980 with Angela Lansbury (1925-2022) playing Miss Marple. She was much closer to the character presented in the novels.
As far as I read, Agatha Christie once wanted Joan Hickson (1906-1998) to play Miss Marple, after she saw her on stage, what she finally did in the 12 BBC Miss Marple films (1984-1992).
Brilliant thanks for uploading :-)
She was a funny, very good actor

OK. Someone has to say it...Margaret Rutherford kicks ass. She is one of MY favorites, and given half a chance she would be yours, too.
nice. i liked her. thanks
Blithe Spirit
picked up the 4 miss marple dvd`s today & just printed out her filmography, so i can see what films to collect
" Dolly " Rutherford eh ! what a girl she was , always ready for a laugh , a pint and a sing song round the piano .
Did you know that the guy with his hand on her behind (who also dances the twist with her) was her husband in real life? (his name was Stringer Davis.) Did you also know that she went in and out of mental asylums? (manic-depressive. Subjects to electroshocks. And what not.) And still managed to make this wonderful career! (most of it when she had passed 50.) (even got an Oscar. At 70.)
Does anybody know where I can get either the full version of Blithe Spirit, or just the scene of Madame Arcati (Margaret Rutherford) cycling through the village?
movies.vidoevo
you can buy on DVD or BluRay :-)
Its a shame kids today have grandmothers that look like Madonna and Joan Jett, instead of real looking grandmothers like Margaret Rutherford. Just think of all the things you could learn from a woman like her and have a fun time doing it too. Sounds alot more fun than having Madonna teach you how to roll a joint or beat a ticket..
oh i wish she could have been my nan
Anyone know which movies these clips come from, especially the one where R and Stringer Davis are doing the twist?
Murder at the Gallop re: Twist.
@webothlovesoup ... hee hee Margaret played Madame Arcarte... :0)x
bravissima
0:19: Wusste gar nicht, dass Frau Rutherforder mit Erich Honecker gedreht hat ...
@willsandroses ?
@calihartley2010 - Why did Agatha Christie get her title in that sentence and not Dame Rutherford?
@calihartley2010 - I just wondered as a friend of mine received a title as an actor and comes under a lot of criticism if he uses it. People seem to think actors are somehow undeserving.
All her Miss Marple films had scores written by Ron Goodwin. getronknighted at hot mail dot co dot uk is trying to get the composer belatedly honoured. Please support us! And check out Dame Margaret in The Vip's when she won a Best Supporting Actress Oscar over Burton and Taylor.
@mullitboy Try Amazon, or ebay,i got mine from one of them, but i can't remember which.
A great actress, however sadly typecast.
Early part of the 20th century it was of course difficult for women to make their way in the professions or academia, and those who did were often not permitted to marry (eg the marriage bar prevented women teachers from being married until i believe WW2.)
Plus, it was thought to be an educated woman was simply unwomanly.
Thus in popular culture - eg. cinema and literature - it became a cliché that women who were educated and intelligent were always unmarried and .... not very attractive.
So Miss Marple is an elderly spinster, not the young totty. The Professor in _Passport To Pimlico_ is not young slim n sexy but... Margaret Rutherford.
But Rutherford sure did it well🙂
I loved her acting, & yes, some of her typecast roles.
all you said was spot on. I would also say that she had that certain something on screen that many aspire to but very few achieve. No matter what she appeared in be it good or not so good the fact she was in it made it worth watching. I have lost count the amount of times i have seen her play miss Marple. My favourite is murder at the gallop
Tony Benn’s cousin
Yes, I remember I was surprised to learn that fact and the sad background to her early life. Tony Benn was interviewed in her biography.
More English than the Queen, and that's a fact.
