    OMG my name is Shameka during my elementary years and Middle School I went to a predominantly white school and I was always told how beautiful and unique my name was fast forward to 10th grade my first time going to an all-black School,they would let me know how ghetto my name was (even though most of them had names that rhyme with my name like Tamika shaniqua etc
    . my mom said she named me that because it means Lord. My first job I was working at a chicken fast food restaurant the manager asked me what my name was I told her and she said "oh okay so you're going to have an attitude I can already tell because of your name"I could not believe she said that and I was actually really embarrassed. I don't really go by my first name anymore only people that call me that are family members and close friends because of this exact reason smh

    Sharkeisha is actually 😂 a real name...I'm not kidding. But truth be told, many companies do or at least did until recently; screen resumes for "ethnic " sounding names. 😂😂😂

    Interesting. There have been studies done where black sounding names get less callbacks for jobs. There is an association between names and class in America. I think this is more class oriented than race.

  • @AprilHarmony9

    Ok, so I have two middle names, one is "blk sounding" and the other "latino sounding", in the south, its was fine, no one said a word about my name. However, here in the northwest, I was made fun of and told to change it if I wanted a high earning job in "wht society". And due to hpw i talk, I constantly get "you don't talk like your name sounds". Ok..... Here's the thing. If WE don't respect our own unique names, then "wht society" won't either. Its cognitive despondency thats get under my skin

    • @ExoticalsUnited
      @ExoticalsUnited  3 місяці тому +9

      yup its 100% cognitive dissonance. if you dislike your own culture, of course other people are going to look down upon it 😂

    Absolutely Black people love to make fun of black names. So as an Angolan( central African) my African names were diminished. Zolele means want or desire and people looked down on it. Now I grew up in South Africa and its different there. Any white sounding name is ridiculed. To clown South Africas Queen B ( Bonang Mateba) people on twitter called her by her second name Dorothy.
    All in all saying that black names will hold us back or that anything black is holding us back is putting curses on ourselves.

    I get more mocking of my name from white people vs black. They will ask me how to pronounce my name and then will purposefully pronounce it wrong . I’ve even had yt people asked me what made my parents give me the name or if I’m African . So now I’m gonna go by a shorter nickname . It’s gotten so bad that I marked out my full name on my name tag and put a shorter nickname over it .

    • @ExoticalsUnited

    In school when I was going to a mostly urban black school I had people tell me my name was ghetto because my mom added I in front of “Keirah”. I had people tell me that I wouldn’t get jobs because they’d flip right past my application just because of me name…🤦🏽‍♀️

      Sadly, there is statistical evidence that resumes are judged on names.
      I have a white male friend (he's blunt) said he wouldn't hire me based on my name on my resume. I have always had trouble getting jobs. And my name is a Serbian orgin.

    5:03 oh 100%. one night i was getting my hair braided for my graduation at this lady‘s house and her teenage daughter came downstairs and started going off about “the c****s at the beauty supply store”
    then proceeded to say something along the lines of “it’s okay bc we know how they treat black people” implying that all of them are racist so she’s justified to call them a slur for no reason, like WHAT???
