      In the case of HKSV, nobody else is watching. End to end encryption & none of your video is shared with Apple. That’s the biggest benefit to HKSV

    Absolutely agreed. After having gone through 4 different cameras and 3 completely different wifi configurations and routers (even different apartments), I keep getting the offline cameras WAY TOO OFTEN. It’s pretty disappointing to realize that there have been no improvements in this regard for two entire years. People will eventually start voting with their feet, and I hope Apple is listening rather than waiting to give up. Great video as always!

    I normally use the native apps BUT use the HKSV for the quick ‘at a glance’ since I have different camera brands. At a glance is nice since I don’t have to jump into each app. I use Homebridge to bring em all together.

    Great video George and all the best for 2024 🎉! Like you, I”m all in on  Homekit, but have held off on the cameras. I have always found Homekit video lacking. I think  needs a local Homekit hub with enough storage and a display to keep data local, get rid of cloud ☁️ storage, resolution limits and have local control which will likely fix all the offline issues. I’m using Eufy’s smart lock video doorbell combo which has been great, but will likely go with Unifi for the rest of my security cameras as I already have a UDM Pro and solid wired network.

    • @GeorgeLangabeer
      @GeorgeLangabeer  8 місяців тому

      A wired NVR system is always the better option (as long as it’s a good one). If I didn’t live in an apartment, I’d ditch WiFi cameras in in exchange for Alibi system in a heartbeat.

    I have tapo WiFi cameras around my house and was bumped by not being able to use it with Apple HomeKit. And I was about to intergrade homebridge and connect it to Apple HomeKit till I saw your video. I think my biggest 2 issues would be 1080p resolution and not allowing 24x7 recording (what the heck it’s 2024). I’m hoping they would fix this by this year. But till then I ain’t changing anything.

    Agreed! I was hoping we'd have a chance to talk about projects we have for this year in the HK Member Chat. This year we are also moving away from HKSV and have a few goals: all outdoor cameras will be PoE, most indoor cameras will be PoE with a couple exceptions that will be Wi-Fi, those must support RTSP. I'm still deciding what I'll use on my server to manage the cameras, in the past I enjoyed BlueIris. I'm looking at some more modern solutions with AI. I have a NAS for storage. Apple needs to get their stuff together. My Alexa smarthome setup combined with Home Assistant is way more capable than my HK with Home Assistant setup.

    The hammer 🔨 laying it down ! I came to your channel because of your starling review. I have a nest doorbell, a OG nest indoor camera, wired google camera and the google nest floodlight camera. My google home nest max acts as a camera too. I also have 3 google home hubs. The hubs come in handy to view the cameras. Like you said starling is an amazing product. The always work in my Apple home app. I still have the google aware subscription so I have 24/7 video access plus plan. I really enjoy the mesh of Apple and google. Often I have to go into the google home app to view footage because of the lake of 24/7 Apple home is missing. Does your parents still have the google floodlight? I am considering a wired system but dont know if I want to fork out the money and start over. Thanks for your great work

    I agree. I am using ASV. But only for a non security application. I can live with the missed detections and 1080p in that application. For my video security, not a chance. Already had two attempted b&E. Both resulted in arrests based mainly on video evidence pulled from recordings higher than 1080p.

    Hi George! I hope you are doing well and that you enjoyed your holidays! :) What do you think about adding a covert layer of video security to the overt layer you showcase in your video. I notice on a lot of burglary videos on UA-cam that the criminals either coat the camera lenses with a spray, disable the system, and/or simply wear masks to evade recognition making the video virtually useless.
    But, if there were a covert security camera and alarm system in the house they might catch the criminal's face on camera and lead to an arrest and possibly recovery of the stolen goods.
    What are your thoughts on this? Do you recommend any covert/hidden home security system brands?

    I'm planning on replacing five of my Aqara G2H camera hubs to Ubiquiti G4/G5 Instant cameras this year. I currently have all Ubiquiti PoE cameras for the outdoors and I want to move to Ubiquiti cameras for the indoors as well. I rarely used HKSV footage anyway. I usually go straight to the Aqara cameras and pull up the footage off of the SD card that I have inside them where I am doing 24/7 recordings. My OCD will feel much better once I have all my camera footage storage on my UniFi UNVR Pro that is in a RAID array. If an SD card fails, no footage available. If I need to go back earlier than a week, no footage available. If I want to save some video footage, very difficult (at least to me) to do so in the Aqara app. UniFi cameras do a better job of smart detections (IMHO) and again I really like the proposition of having my video stored on a RAID array. The indoor cameras are monitoring my four exterior doors and my garage door from the inside of the house.

      Didn’t realize we were at “Bro” status, but ok…resolution is all about the zoom (not watching live on a display). Most cameras get pixelated the more you zoom (unless it’s a Varifocal or PTZ). 4K will get a lot less pixelated than 2K (& most certainly 1080p) when you zoom. That goes for live view & playback.

    I Agree. Im all Apple at my house too. I might be switching it up if things don't change as well.. Ecobee just came out with a new Doorbell but that probably won't help!

      I don’t have doorbell wiring here, or I’d be trying the Ecobee myself….but you’re right, doesn’t matter in HKSV.
