I am an actuary from Alaska. Every day, I compile statistics on swimming related fatalities in Bristol bay. Often my life seems like a monotone ferris wheel -- people enter and depart life in such calculable ways. I have become so comfortable in my routine that I neglect to remember what makes life unique. But when I listen to this song, I remember ice fishing with my dad, catching my first bluegill, and how wonderful childhood felt. Dad can't remember this anymore, but he always smiles when this song comes on. Thank you Radiohead.

After looking at the lyrics deeply, I think I figured out what the video means, at least for me. 0:54 The stop motion characters were seeing are the "weird fishes". The lyrics are about a person who's lost faith in themselves. They feel as though they are "At the bottom of the sea". But then all of a sudden, a figure appears in their lives and rekindles the spark inside of their heart. "Your eyes, they turn me". The author asks themselves "Why should I stay here?" implying they'd be crazy not to follow this new person that has resurrected the life inside them 1:47. The wood statue with the skis is the protagonist who falls in love with this amazing figure. However, we find out tragically that this newfound love was nothing but a fake promise and an illusion. The weird fishies end up betraying them, his soul reduced to a phantom, as the protagonist is led on by this fake plastic love. He follows them to the edge of the Earth and falls off after being abandonned because "Everybody leaves, if they get the chance". Having been betrayed, the main character is once again going through intense feelings of sadness and grief. Indeed, time and time again theyve let themselves been "Eaten by the worms and weird fishes" who attach themsleves on their head 3:17 , the worms and fishes symbolizing the people that have betrayed them in the past, and devoured their soul and life from the inside with their lies and broken promises. The final lyrics conclude the story with a meaning that is extremely melancholic yet bittersweet at the same time, it perfectly captivates the human condition. No matter what tragic experiences we may endure in our lives, no matter how many people break our hearts, eventually we all hit the bottom and you can only go up from there. "Ill hit the bottom and escape" At 5:02 , the wood statue person rises slowly from the ground, you can see his heart has healed as a new head grows on top of the body with a little bird appearing inside, representing rebirth and life. Bonus Easter Egg: Weird fishes = Feared wishes Edit: I'm so happy this resonated with so many people. Radiohead forever, papa. I remember you putting the disc in the car, looking at me with a proud smile saying “you’ll have the same music taste as me my little girl”. And it worked dad. It worked. If only you were here to see it.
I was mesmerized by the whole video, but I pray to god that those things were burned immediately after they finished. Just imagining those things sitting in some abandoned warehouse with other oddities gives me chills.
When my dad died in 2019 9 days before his 58th bday I put this song on a 72 hour loop while laying in bed crying. He was my hero and everything I am today is because of his influence. He was a painter and spent his life’s work painting the most beautiful sceneries. I keep some of his work as a memory. The best one is him and I fishing on a old pier that has now been demolished. This song will always hold a special place in my heart for my dad..
I always thought the song was about a broken human being, at the lowest point in their life as stated by “bottom of the sea”, realizing they deserve better saying “why should I stay?”. Finding a toxic lover and chasing them like a fish chasing a lure, hence the person is a “weird fish” knowing they have the opportunity to get this broken promise, all that person was, was bait. Chasing the bait to “the edge of the world”. That ultimately always led to them not getting caught. The saddest part is they know what happens, they’ve seen this before as they say “everybody leaves if they get the chance”. They’ve been baited before. Yet they still turn it around and say “this is my chance”, knowing that this person is just gonna gut them or throw them back to the bottom, because they don’t want the weird fish. Hence they’re left at the bottom to get “eaten by the worms”
It's actually about weird fishes and whale falls in the deep ocean. How when a whale dies, a whole ecosystem comes to life on it's remains. These biological communities cannot exist until the death of a whale. There is a strange metaphor here that I suppose you could relate to the human condition but it's really a literal song. Thom also wrote songs for "Blue Planet 2", the BBC documentary about the ocean, narrated by David Attenborough. The ocean obviously gives him great inspiration.
That’s just life, man. I like to say that Radiohead is like music for a lifetime. Like footage of the Earth from space. The reason it comforts you is because you are human. ❤
For whatever reason this song makes me think of someone I lost who I'll always think about too. More than once tears have exploded from my eyes listening to this song
Hopefully you have recovered from your loss, this song has always had a sense of ethereal optimism to it. May your father be well in heaven where all music legends end up.

they really aren't too big of a band until you know of them. they are also incredibly unique so u don't need to worry about that. for example, KID A is one of the most unique albums ever created.
"such a well known band" sounds so foreign for me as a 22 year old guy in Poland. You are by all means right, though no one here listens to them so for me they are a rarity of sorts

I found this song over half a year ago while looking for peaceful music they used to play at work, I got here not knowing what to expect, and I found my new favorite song. Months after that, it is my son's favorite song too, and he's just 1 year old! Every time he hears the first two seconds he starts dancing along with the song, it's simply amazing, thank you, Radiohead for this song
The first time I heard this song I was on a bus trip looking out the window. I had an out of body experience which I am reminded of every time I listen to it.
That reminds me of an experience I had while listening to How to Disappear Completely. I was looking out the window of my car when I was leaving the hospital where my mom was getting ready to pass away. It was snowy and the moon shown on the snow and I missed her so much knowing she would be gone soon.
There is something about this band that has always intrigued me, but only recently has it really "clicked" for me, and I have missed the feeling of enjoying something so whole heartedly you can barely contain yourself. This has invited a beauty into my life that I have been searching for. This has made me grateful to exist on this Earth. This has restored a bursting vibrance and delicate softness to my soul.
Same haha grateful to exist on earth because of them and only for them. Their music can bring me to some other dimension that my inner self could only comprehend
Similar for me. I've liked some songs from them for years, but earlier this year it all just clicked and I became an obsessive superfan, listening almost exclusively to Radiohead for months lol. I love that feeling. Same thing happened with the Beatles a couple years ago.
That was simply a lovely thing to leave, for others to find and be moved by. "This has restored a bursting vibrance and delicate softness to my soul." That is gorgeous.

I feel so lost, sending messages to people that won’t respond, and giving myself to position that holds no meaning, we’re just a bunch of systems of molecules floating around causentually
@@fanthonyman2140 Our positions may have no obvious meaning it is up to us to apply to purpose in our lives and find the meaning . Someone out there loves you man
I’m as gobsmacked by this band in 2023 as I was in 1995 when I first discovered them at 13 watching the video for High and Dry on MTV. What a wild wonderful musical ride it’s been and will continue to be.
just realized listening to this on lsd that even in the - dark, drowning, sad, ugly, weird - theyre having fun and contemplating the beauty of life like it was their first time. so beautiful.
This music video is a masterpiece. It is a perfect melt of technique (a majestic usage of the stop motion) and an extrimely imaginific and poetical abstract storytelling, both wonderfully mashing with the sounds and the subject of the song. It will be on my mind for the rest of my life like a cornerstone for the meaning and purpose of art. Congratuations to the creator!
One of the greatest Radiohead songs & this video made by Tobias Stretch, is one of the most ingenious & entertaining videos that I have ever seen. I never tire of it! Well done, Mr. Stretch!!!
I listened to one of their older songs the other day and outta nowhere felt this super dark deep sadness for the first time in years and had to immediately switch the song.
For some reason the melody and the video bring me a strong feeling of nostalgia, specifically in the 2000s, it's something magical that I can't describe, I seriously love this band and this song too much.
My Mom and my granny died last month and this song has helped me a lot...I can't show much emotion in front of other people, but I can't hold back my tears when I hear this song.
I honestly think this is the greatest song of the 21st century. Its just perfection, that mellow guitar lick, the understated yet layered rhythm section, the beautiful soaring vocals from Thom, the chilled break and the dark and haunting sounding climax. I’ve never heard a song that makes me as cathartic yet emotional as this masterpiece
I love the fact that this artist represented weird fishes with a movement animation, I always felt it the same way, travelling by bike across the country
What an intellectual way of thinking about that. I know that sounds silly but like not many people think of that correlation between music and the perfect visual accompaniment and I just appreciate that you appreciate that.
I experienced it in a slightly different way; this song was interesting from the very first moment, but it grows better and better over time^^ like 80% of their songs
@@leehiro4840 same way. I first head smooth mcgrooves cover of it and eventually listened to this for the first time last year. It keeps getting better each time I listen to it.
I can see how this video is made, while I have no idea how they pulled it off. Really amazing. And one of my favorite Radiohead songs too. Just amazing!
This song is so atmospheric that it literally transports me to a completely new place. The first part of the song makes me feel like I am floating in the center of an infinite ocean, surrounded by powerful swirling currents and glowing fishes that swim beautifully. As these events occur, I simultaneously feel a deep inner pain that makes me crawl into a ball to compress a feeling of unimaginable loneliness, but to feel an incredible feeling of freedom. In complete contrast, the second part of the track surrounds me in blurry images of chaos and disorder, filth and violence, that flash and tug on me. What's even stranger is that the song makes me feel completely dissociated from this chaos, it makes me feel unfazed and powerful. When the world around you flows beautifully, you hurt. When the world around you seems to spiral in chaos, you're unaffected. This song is so poetic it hurts.
Truly, the most bonkers video you could create for a song but, this is Radiohead. The creator of the video deserves so much, maybe a lifetime supply of 'mushrooms'.....
There's something so beautiful about these odd creatures. Despite them not uttering a single word, the video does a great job at humanising them. Sure theyre weird and creepy in their own way, but everybody deserves love.
I used to live in the small town where this video was made (Boyertown PA) so pretty close but unfortunately I don't know the guy that made this, he was older than me.
At a time when I felt like I was starting a new phase in my life, where so many things were changing around me, this song felt like it was the turning point for two different chapters. This song was truly the transition between two key points in my life. Absolutely beautiful.

The first night I spent with my now fiancé, I discovered this song. I had never stayed out late before, and spent the best night of my life just talking to him until 2am after our shift at the restaurant we met at, getting to know him, watching movies, drinking cocktails, just being young and stupid in college. He is the most amazing human being I have ever met, and he has the most beautiful brown eyes you’ve ever seen. In the few years I’ve known him he has changed everything bad about me for the better and my entire perspective and path in life. I’m closer to God, I quit vaping, I just became a better person in general. Every time I hear this song now I go back to that night. I can’t believe how blessed I am to have found him and that I get the privilege to spend the rest of my life with him. His eyes really did turn me ;)
its honestly bringing nostalgia. i miss being a kid, i miss not having to hear my parents argue every single day, i miss considering two problems hard for math, i miss the relationship i had with my family, i miss talking with dolls, i miss waking up and seeing teletubbies on my tv, or being excited for new winx seasons, and i miss being excited for being alive, seeing so much adventures in front of my eyes. i grew up too fast and had to realize the world is not how it looked as a kid. i just wish i had more time, nothing more.

This makes me feel whole. My brother passed in September and this song has been everything to me ❤️
Im sorry for your loss.. he's in a better place now❤
I always thought the song was about a broken human being, at the lowest point in their life as stated by “bottom of the sea”, realizing they deserve better saying “why should I stay?”.
That is a really good way of looking at it
It's actually about weird fishes and whale falls in the deep ocean.
