ZELOS Aurora 38mm Field Watch Review

- The release of this new Aurora filed watch is met with joy as well as disappointment from me...
Joy because it extremely well specked for the money, and disappointment because as a limited release, these sell out in minutes upon launch
The watch is going live on the 14th July 2023, best of luck to all who are you're keen to acquire one
Link to watch launch: zeloswatches.c...
Note: the watch featured in the video was sent out to the channel without the need for it to be returned
Thanks for watching...
I own this watch and it’s grown in me and the Bracelet is my favorite aspect of this beauty. This is my work watch and I am extremely pleased with the value I got from this piece.
That dial is stunning, and the bracelet is something else
Always enjoy wearing the Aurora Nebula, tough and comfy, with a touch of bling. Thinking that the darker hardened titanium color works well with the purple.
Top notch review and camera work as always 👌
Literally the only complaint I have about my first-gen Aurora is the scale/visibility of the hands against the black, textured "granite" dial. Otherwise, it's a great combination of distilled field watch and Zelos' unique design sensibility.
I agree that it's harder to justify limiting these runs, at this point. The perceived quality of the brand is secure, and surely they could safely scale their operations to meet an established - and passionate - customer base. I've had good fortune so far, being able to snag my preferred watch four out of four times, but I can imagine the frustration of missing the chance. I suppose that the flip side of building that sort of scarcity hype is that you risk alienating potential customers.
Still kicking myself over missing the Hammerhead V3 in hammered crimson. My Fiancée (bless her heart) snagged me this one though while I was having a bad day, so I can finally say I have a zelos!
@@justfornucs Damn, that's so thoughtful! Sounds like a keeper.
I've always had a love hate relationship with Zelos. So much so that I swore I would never buy one of their watches. On the one hand, they make beautiful watches. Great variety of materials and the nicest dials around. On the other hand, as you alluded to, I hate their business model! They make a very limited number of watches and then create a feeding frenzy when they are released. Making it very hard to impossible to get the watch you want. I'm afraid I had to eat my words though and I recently bought my first Zelos. A Titanium Hammerhead with a Meteorite dial. I absolutely love the watch. I still hate their business model but it has worked very well for them and I don't see them changing is any time soon.
Gorgeous proportions. Nicely spotted.
secured one for myself about 15 minutes ago. pretty hyped.
Good review. Looking forward to seeing reviews of the other models before they go one sale...
Love the dial.
beautiful watch 👍 thanks for the review Peter
My pleasure!
Thank you for watching 👍
Hey Peter I certainly don't class myself as an expert just a enthusiast, and not being into divers, this to my eye's is a stunner of a watch, titanium, good miyota caliber, and a gorgeous dial. I've just spent my savings on another watch, looks like I'll have to start saving again.
Love the way those lugs drop.
Stunning photography work! A touch small for my 20cm wrist, and I agree they sell out quickly! Great video!
They also have a 42mm option, but I opted to review this 38mm (being a field style watch) I though tit s more appropriate
cheers Greg
I wanted to say thank you for this video! I've wanted the 38mm Aurora Ti 'Hammered Teal' ever since I discovered, it of course after it had already sold out and was only available for up-priced resale. Seeing this video lead me down a rabbithole of google, ebay, reverse image searching and Japanese auction sites. I'm now waiting for that Aurora Ti Teal for less than I would pay for this new batch - if I got the chance.
See how you go when the sale drops in a few days. If you miss out, you're welcome to this one I have here, cheers
@@PeterKotsa I appreciate the offer! I'm waiting for the 38mm Teal to come my way from Japan as we speak. :) I doubt you'll have much of an issue getting rid of this one, though!
Delicious! And quite a range to select, if your purchase finger is quick!
Key word..IF 😊
I really like it but the hands are just too small compared to the markers, a trend in Zelos atm.
Great review, thanks for getting it out so quick. My choice is between the purple and the mop and still not sure which one to choose. I agree a little more purple and little less black would have been cool, still a stunning dial. And yes more watches so there is less panic when the time comes would be helpful 😂. I agree as well the bigger clasp balances out the watch itself so my cons are the same as yours and they aren’t even really a big deal. Especially considering the value for money.
The dial resembles colored and crumpled paper. It’s nice but I’m not mad about it. Another gripe I think is the lack of proper orientation after dark, with the 12 o’clock indicator being exactly the same as the 3,6 and 9 o’clock ones. And while I’ll occasionally watch a Zelos review (like here) I’d never consider getting one, because they’re impossible to get! (At least the most desirable variants anyway 🤷♂️) Even if they’re great value for money and very well specified.
Thanks for sharing David, good to hear from you👍
Looks great .... just wish the handset was bigger
Im always really tempted with zelos watches, i really like this one, though im waiting for the perfect one first
You know there’s no such thing as a perfect watch though right? 😉
It is a beauty
I get a Sinn 556 vibe from this watch, how would you compare the 2 quality wise, obviously taking into account the price difference?
Comparable for sure
I think the Sinn feels a little bit better tolerances but only slightly better 👍
Great watch…unfortunately a limited edition. We need to get you to 50K subs…come on PK lovers get the word out!
Sad thing, is very small for my wrist, the dial is amazing.
A great watch you can't buy...
Great review, as usual 👍
Glad you enjoyed it Jonathan. cheers
very cool watch and great Videography. I wonder.. what camera + Lens do you use?
Sony A7
40 - 42mm is my sweet spot for a watch size. I don't love the trend of going smaller and smaller.
Hey Rob, they do actually have a 42mm of the same watch being released on the same day..check them out if you like
cheers
How is the AR coating in your opinion? I have a blacktip Meteorite and it does reflect a lot so it sort of kills a bit the coolness of the dial. My swordfish sand TI actually looks much better than the Blacktip.
This one has been fine, no issues and no washout in that crystal..
@@PeterKotsa I see, thank you for the input. I believe the reason is that this one and the swordfish have flat crystal whereas the blacktip is domed.
@@rafaelmtoledo Ahh I see, flat and domed reflect differently that's for sure
Zelos great micro brand that has their own design and approach. Peter, if you could just focus on the watch specifications with a soft tone touch on certain aspects that you don't like. No need to characterize them as "cons" or "negatives". Your video quality is excellent!!
OR if you want someone to softball rough edges and kiss companies azzes so YOU can feel better about it, YOU go somewhere else to consume THAT content. Newsflash SallyJim... IF something isn't a plus... And it does matter to you... ITS A NEGATIVE. Dim weak fool.
1🤤🤤% Good Lord,
Zelos straight killed this one!
Edit- the "forced scarcity" of 200 units is a real kick right to the stick for consumers. They *COULD* definitely make more units and sell for less per unit, but they're creating their own air of exclusivity.
That... Sucks.
Elshan wants them to be special for each owner. The lower production runs means he is able to have around 10 releases per year as opposed to 3/4. Look at Christopher Ward. One to two releases per year, because they make production runs to order only
I like it ! Just wish it was 40 or 41 mm
Cool video peter !!
Cheers
They do offer some 42mm variants btw 👍
@@PeterKotsa Cool !!
Beautiful watch, too bad there's no date complication.
Some have a few watches to rotate daily, and for them not being worried about the incorrect date is a plus : )
How cost please?
Got my Aurora (same dial) and sadly the case finishing wasn't quite as good as my girlfriend's MOP mosaic version. First time buying Zelos watch so not sure how I feel about the brand based on my experience. Wstch is otherwise exactly what I wanted. Gorgeous dial.
Thats unusual for these to have different case finishes...maybe drop Zelos an email see what they say
Do you have any plans in the future to review the Marathon watches?
Not at this stage, no
123 grams for a 38mm watch on a bracelet doesn't seem very light for being titanium.
The Faraday Cage for anti-magnetism is responsible for the extra grams..👍
There is too much going on on the dial for my tastes. The fume, the pattern, the applied indexes, and the sandwich dial all together is just overwhelming. It looks like it was designed by committee, with each person adding something "cool".
That said, I suspect they are well made and will sell out as soon as they are released, so my opinion on the design isn't universal.
its still easier to get than a helm Vanuatu
Currently #3962 on the wait list
Not true. If you want a helm you can get one, albeit with a wait, you still get what you want eventually though. If you miss the launch of a zelos that's it, you have no chance. They are so frustrating.
My father waited 2.5 years to get his Komodo 😂
2:05 Respectfully disagree with "fantastic bracelet". I'm wearing the watch now. I'll probably spoil the watch for you now, but it's amazing how such a good watch fails at elementary principles of a watch. The female end links and the neighbouring links don't marry well. Sudden change in height. Especially visible when on the wrist. Second problem, bracelet again, the clasp is not snug with the bracelet on the side closer to the push release. You'll be catching things with it, shave off a nipple when showering... Good luck with that.
A watch is maximum as good as its bracelet is...
I like everything about this example but the dial. It looks like a crumpled piece of foil or something. 😢
Nice watch, but the markers are too big and the fume is unnecessary.
In other words, this watch as way too much white and black and not enough purple.
Lastly, I’m not much into the diseased dial, the “my watch has the texture of zombie or maybe tree bark” craze. That said, works here - except where it’s needlessly blackened out.
My taste aside I’m not a FOMO guy so I kind of ignore the brand. Even if they come up with a watch I want it will be gone in a flash anyway.
It's not any sort of fear of missing out for me, it's much more "Wow, I love that watch...& what a great price. I'm purchasing that watch." Then again, I'm incredibly wealthy with literally thousands of dollars in the bank, so it doesn't even make a dent for me. I'm so rich. My lovely wife & our five beautiful kids don't realize we're so rich, because I funnel most of our disposal income into cool stuff for me, but hey...well, now that I really think about it, I'm being a pretty selfish husband & father. Darn it. I'm still buying the purple Zelos this Friday...they have shoes.
It's a pity that I have had no hands-on experience with any Zelos. That said, the far majority of them aesthetically do not appeal to me. The Novas probably come closest to being desirable. This, however, does have a very attractive dial plate. But I must admit I'm a little surprised at all the praise. Yes, I totally agree that there seems no point in these strict limitations if there is such obvious demand. Surely it would pay off to find a better equilibrium in numbers. Perhaps limiting to 300 or 500 would do just that without this craze and surely that wouldn't devalue the experience much if at all? I also agree that while a clasp needs to prove itself in practice, this one looks very well thought out and executed. However, when looking at your footage, I find the sandwich baton markers a clear technical mistake and not even an aesthetic asset. The slightly wild and shimmery dial texture requires pronounced applied markers. The cardinal ones are fine, I'm sure they could have come up with a set that would have improved legibility and increased identity. Under some angles the sandwich markers almost disappear, and they're also weaker on the lume. The other gripe I see is the lack of attention to detail. Exactly what does the lume pip of the second hand relate to? It doesn't even seem to line up with anything, so it just becomes an incongruous element floating across the dial. The hour and minute hand are only OK, but really should have extended a smidgen further. Aesthetically I'm not convinced by the difference in thickness but will concede this is personal. I'd fix all of this before applying the logo. I think this logo is already raised from the texture, so it wouldn't make such a substantive difference. I would have liked the case to be more shapely. That is, to lose some visual weight. But again this is clearly a preference, not a necessity. Still, I can see for many this would be a cracking watch and that dial plate I wouldn't mind seeing more of.
I sent mine back. Felt cheap somehow.
I never handled the last release, so I cant say personally if these have changed.
This one here feels solid as a rock and really well built
Thanks for sharing 👍
@@PeterKotsa Maybe it's just me. It felt too light and jangly in my opinion.
@@wieg86 ahhh I see. That'll be the titanium. You either love it or hate 👍
Nice dial texture. Like it when Zelos always comes up with new dial colours and surface patterns. This dial surface is unique but sacrificed readability at certain angles. Lately there have been too many scalpers and real collectors and Zelos fans like me have not been able to get certain models. Maybe Zelos can set up a fan club with registration for pre-sales so loyal customers can enjoy Zelos watches rather than getting disappointed when certain models get sold out in seconds.
Thats a great idea
Zelos is a one man show, he does limited runs to keep cost down and does sell a few to Serious Watches, so there is a second chance to get some Zelos.
Yeah, that's a great watch but I've given up on Zelos.
Every time I try getting a watch that I like from Zelos it's already sold out.
I'm not going to waste money on a Zelos watch that I don't like, that's just stupid.
Παλι τραγουδουσες χθες? Τι φωνη ειναι αυτη? 😋😂
Cheers mate, be well (get better?).
PS Great brand, but i never liked them, esthetically...
yeah, bit of a frog in the throat today..🐸🐸
Nice watches but becoming pointless because you can’t buy one
Thanks Richard Ann frankie dog England ❤
Because scarcity marketting
I Really hate a review with No mention of price
Did you watch the video? .. 01:04
cheers
38 mm 😂😂😂😂 4 kids are perfect 🎉
There’s a 42mm version available too
@@PeterKotsa some of us need the 47 mm versions. Large sizes are not something Zelos offers, sadly. Even the 44mm Hammerhead wears like a 42.
@@rauliorga3823 WOW, massive wrist ..respect 😊👍
@@rauliorga3823 LOL
If 38 mm is for kids, then how do grown men wear 36 mm watches? LOL
It isn't new.
Love zelos , hate the limited releases though , wish they would at least double the numbers of watches made .
Lovely watch, not sure if the colour will go with my eyes though 🥹
Hahahahaha, depends how many drinks you've had the night before
