When a domestic house cat approaches All other animals: **WARNING** **DANGER** "You stay away from me you destructive beast!!!" Humans: "Come here baby~ Come here~"
It’s funny how the deer knows that, despite its size, the cat is a predator and something to fear. I guess that’s what millions of years of being hunted and killed by felines will do to a species. And the cat’s relaxed attitude despite being in danger of being stomped suggests that it knows how the predator/prey relationship is supposed to work as well.
Yeah. You could tell something in that cats mind snapped back to the Serengeti and it's prey. "Just a burst of speed and I could be on that thing and a quick bite to the back of its neck and I could feed like a...oh wait, I'm just a house cat".
Yep, and when her owner called she was like "hark, the queen speaks! But she has not assumed the hunting position! She has ceded the kill to me! I shall not fail her!!"
Interesting theory. Not sure if she sees that thing as prey though. It could be protecting its territory and/ or owner. I've also seen a video where a cat attacks a bear that came on its porch.
The dear is like "am i supposed to be scared?" "Am I supposed to run? " "what's the protocol here?" "They tell me i have to run from predators, but I think I can take him...".
Love how the cat is like one tenth of the size of the deer but every part of the (initial) body language of the cat says "hunter" and the deer KNOWS it x) Then the owner calls and the cat is like "Oh right, I forgot I'm supposed to be just a domesticated house cat right now".
The deer was so focused on Jelly, that she didn’t fully realise that our intrepid channel owner was getting close, too. Such a wonderful and beautiful interaction/encounter.🙂
This is Winnipeg now. I've lived here all my 58 years and I've never seen so much wildlife in our suburban neighbourhood. We have a herd of deer that wander around on a nightly basis, wild turkeys, foxes, more rabbits and squirrels than you can count. It's like living in a Disney cartoon!
This has become the case where I live as well, to a lesser extent. I assume it's because we keep building, tearing down wetland areas and encroaching upon their habitat. Do you think that's why it's happening where you are?
Fascinating to see millions of years of evolution and genetics at work here. That domesticated cat instinctively knew or understood enough that the deer represented a prey animal, but was too big for it to take down safely. So it instead stalked and communicated its territorial boundary to the deer in a show of intimidation. As for the deer, it also instinctively came to the understanding fairly quickly that it was looking at a predatorial creature, albeit a small one, and communicated its defensive posture accordingly.
Deer is actually trying to say that to the cat. Humans risk their lives by going outside too. Stabbings, accidents, or shootings. Would you rather stay at home for the rest of your lives? There’s video of a cat chasing off an alligator. We had an outdoor cat that used to chase off dogs, until two escaped huskies cornered it and one got ahold of it. RIP Tyler. Condolences on losing Bentley.
It is instructive that though the cat is much smaller than the deer, it's stalking approach has triggered an instinctive response in the deer to turn away.
That cats think that he is 250lbs and bulletproof in his furry little mind. We had a siamese cat and a German Shepard when I was a child. The dog was terrified of the cat, despite the dog was 10 times its size and weight. That dog was trained and would happily rip your arm off if you touched my sisters or me, but if that cat walked in the room the dog cowered behind a chair hoping the cat s didnt see him.
Speed and agility. Cats are the best predators. Often faster than striking snakes so they tend to be more confident by default unless something really catches them off guard. Otherwise they seem to prefer to hold their ground as much as possible. This deer is making me realise that not only cats are curious creatures, it's probably a far more general animal trait... Just cats are probably more confident than a lot of prey animals, having less to fear, and also a need to conserve energy for hunting so a disinclination to run unnecessarily or move far from potential prey. Just strong hunter instincts maybe that makes them like stalking things? I had a cat that stalked two ibises bigger than she was, clearly having no intention of committing to pouncing on them but the stalking instinct was strong so she stayed close... But also just out of reach of their long beaks!

That cat is oozing with confidence with how nonchalantly he’s walking towards the deer and casually starts looking around then walking back.

I like how the deer gives zero f-ks about the human standing there.
I've seen that happen. I used to live backed up to a green belt. The deer were skittish, but when my cat ventured out beyond the fence, the deer would come right up. The presence of another animal seems to calm their natural fear.

Ariez good point 🧐 adorable cat, though
That adds up
Cats are natural born hunters. They know a prey when they see one. The suburban area I live has many deers. The kittens here stalk deers from very young age.

An apex predator losing to an intimidation is like a crime of nature, cats are cheating the system!
It really is an incredible adaptation though. You don't just defeat an enemy, you confuse their autonomic nervous system into completely changing their behavior, like hi-jacking a machine

I think they are referring to the cat not reading the deer's body language. The deer isn't stomping its feet to be cute. It is doing it as a warning sign. The deer is basically telling the cat "Back off before I stomp you to death."

Wow!
must be difficult to have a garden.
Alpha-Omega We stick to Tomatoes and bedding plants that they won't touch. On the positive side, the rabbits love to eat dandelions!
This has become the case where I live as well, to a lesser extent. I assume it's because we keep building, tearing down wetland areas and encroaching upon their habitat. Do you think that's why it's happening where you are?
Same here in Wilmington, NC. Every animal that you mentioned can be found if you look, and it's very suburban here. I enjoy it, but it's a bad sign.

@Maryam M.H. They often try. Look it up.
Yeah. My cat has tried to murder me like half a dozen times.
A cat tried to kill my nephew. We had to shoot the cat to save him
Fascinating to see millions of years of evolution and genetics at work here.
The way the deer stomps is admirable. Like shes saying go away
Deer is actually trying to say that to the cat. Humans risk their lives by going outside too. Stabbings, accidents, or shootings. Would you rather stay at home for the rest of your lives? Obviously not. Cats would take the risk too because even if they lived from that experience, they would still like to go outdoors and just be more careful the next time if there is one. Cats can learn just like humans can learn from past mistakes.

Cat has a much higher opinion of it's own size than everyone else. Some badassery going on with that feline. Lol.
Claws not size
To cute! Including what is apparently Julie’s loving voice, helping to maintain calm responses and the pets return!😼
The stomping reminded me of the Lord of the Rings, "You shall not pass!"
Oh my Lord! My 2nd favorite in all of Tolkien quotes - the first being "Fly you fools!"
Lol, I imagine that's exactly what's going through the deer's head each each stomp. Deer thoughts are that epic!!!
