  • When did our ancestors look the way we expect the earliest members of our genus to have looked? When did they behave in the way we expect the earliest members of our genus to have behaved? The search for what defines the genus Homo has spanned decades and is still debated among scientists today. In this lecture, paleoanthropologist Dr. Bernard Wood surveys the history of attempts to find the earliest members of the genus Homo, including very recent and controversial additions.
"The Origins of the Genus Homo" was presented at the Harold Washington Library on 5/23/2018 as part of The Leakey Foundation's Speaker Series program in partnership with the Chicago Council on Science and Technology. This event was filmed by CAN TV.

I'm glad that comments are not turned off for this video. I think it's an unfortunate tell when comments are turned off.

@@L14MA Not sure what you mean on that. By "dislike display," do you mean the thumbs down? What there some other indicator? The dislike (thumbs down) icon is still here in this discussion.

Nice to see some statistical qualifications made to claims one regularly reads about human evolution. We don't know much and much of what we hope we do know is speculation - and often speculation without modesty. Good lecture and I appreciated the dry sense of humour.

It's good to see Professor Wood as I knew him still as active and articulate as ever.
It's a good many years since he and Dr Crompton had to put us with me as a medical student studying anatomy at Liverpool. He had the distinction among us students as being both our terror and much respected by one and all. To think that if he had failed me out of his classes as he threatened to do on more than one occasion I would have probably have gone in to anthropology rather than medicine. With hindsight I sincerely wish he had!

44:15 “What shall we say about the origins of homo? The answer is 'as little as possible' ". Bravo Professor Wood! Shades of Wittgenstein "Whereof we cannot speak, thereof we must remain silent" ☺

that was an attempted witticism. Homo means man. Grow up because homosexuals exist.

Evolution is totally for people do think, question, research, seek to understand, use science and fact, learn and are educated and continue in that approach so expanding our knowledge and understanding. Not stuck in a dark rut of idiotic beliefs based on myths
