Just wanted to say I’m building this now - thanks for the design! I modified it a little in TinkerCad with space for electronics and with holes for magnets in the rims, a tactile pressure switch, LEDs, and a USB charger. Your design is fantastic. :)

Great video! Thankyou. I am currently working on this project. Have printed all pieces so far on an Ender3V2. Such an easy and fun print. Also had planned on a simple circuit like the one you described with a switch but just using a button cell battery. I do like the idea of rechargeable battery though, hmm. Had also planned on the magnets to keep the 2 halves together so will have to play with that as we want to actually use it for a Star-Lord cosplay, not just a prop.

Gorgeous. Two thoughts. 1) get more powerful magnets so you can get the two halves to stick together better. 2) incorporate one of you magnetic reed switches into the build so the led lights up when the two halves are separated and the magnet is removed?

You can probably turn the stands into a charging station for the battery of the orb, if you can run wires into the stand with a switch with with the USB charger cable and connections run 2 wires up into 2 arms 1 wire per arm and have magnets on both arms where they make contact with your orb and put 2 magnets as contacts on the same location on the orb where the arms are with wires running to the battery in the orb so you can charge it without pulling the orb apart and you have a switch on the stand to turn the charger off when you don’t need to use it..?????

I freaking love these things man 🤯
Ok I don’t think anyone has suggested this, and maybe it would go well in conjunction with the other person’s reed switch suggestion.
For the ‘magnets to keep the halves together’ my vision was, before you fuse the 2 rings to the outer halves, drilling 2/4/however many small recesses in those rings or in the inner part of the silver shell on both sides to house the neodymium magnets. I’m not sure if that’s kind of what you did or totally different, but maybe putting them in the facade ring would make them closer together with their mates, and therefore stronger magnetic grip?… 🤷🏻‍♂️
