That is a beautiful lesson in a real world scenario. I’m so used to watching “studio” tutorials in a sound controlled environment, it is lovely to hear birds, and car engines etc. and from the front seat of the car, where many of us actually practice.
My Dad always practiced in the front seat of his car. He began his teaching business that way, with passerbys asking about his playing :) The car is one of my favorite places to practice and the view changes all the time :)
I'm really impressed... Thank you for sharing this fantastic tutorial. What I like best about it is that you take the time to practice at a very slow tempo. To my opinion that's the only way our fingers can memorize all the things that are to be done... Subscription completed. :-)
Thank you Teeum5. Yes, I'm an ukulele teacher by trade, so I've been working hard on learning how people learn best. It ALWAYS comes down to 2 things; repetition and slow speed. Patience is truly a virtue when learning ukulele :)
I truly appreciate the care and detail that you put into this two-part lesson, Dani. Superb! 😀 I'm happy to say that I can now play the entire song and sing along as well. All because of your amazing lesson. It's important to note that I fell in love with Bossanova music decades ago because of this one song composed by Jobim in 1962. I have sung it for decades but never imagined accompanying myself on an instrument. Thank you so much! I will watch your lesson again until I have the basic grasp on your beautiful strum pattern. It sounds so Brasilian. Love your voice too. 😀🎵🎸🎙️
Wow 510JAZZ, I really appreciate you saying so. And you're playing it now? So cool!! Care to share a video?? I've got some other jazz stuff on my channel, along with a community group on Patreon. We've been exploring vintage American jazz this past year, and I'm excited to start exploring Bossa Nova again. Thanks again!
I like your laidback teaching style. I learned how to play this in about an hour. Still working on the picking pattern but I can play the song now. I signed up for you chord melody class that starts tomorrow. See you then. 😀❤️🎶
I'm impressed. Very beautiful way of singing, I really got the emotion you put on it. And I really thank you for teaching an easy way to play this great son for beginners. I'm looking forward taking my ukulele and start with it. Keep out the good work!
Beautifully captures the sound of this song...Brazilian feel! And you are so relaxed sitting there in a car giving a lesson out the window. Haven't seen an effective instruction delivered from such a mellow vantage point. Thank you, now MY afternoon is going better...
Well I can't think of a better thing to read. You know, that day I was actually pretty frustrated with how my morning was going so I jumped in my Honda Fit and pulled up to the park, under the beautiful trees intent on recording a video for you guys. Birds. Dogs. Breeze. Ukulele. Calmed me right down :)
Hi Dani !! Mango Darling and I just found your beautiful rendition in our search! Love both your mesmerizing vocals as well as your beautiful playing! Now we are working on it!! Thanks for the great tutorial!!!
Oh that's wonderful Natalie! Well, you left this comment a year ago and two months before the Great Pandemic of 2020 began (can you believe it?!) SOOOOO... Did you learn it with your Dad?
Thanks guy! I have a new CD that just came out if you're interested. It's called Drop in my Flower and it's a collaborative project with Grammy winner Daniel Ho. It's stellar! You can find it here: www.danijoymusic.com/shop/
I agree with all the positives here. Super lesson and you can REALLY sing this song.... :) Thanks very much for sharing your talents in music and teaching
Great tutorial and version of this song. It took couple of days to teach my fingers that pattern and much more to be able to play bridge chords. It was so worth it, I´m using this pattern a lot, with other songs too. Thank you!
That is so cool! I'd love to hear what other songs it works with! I just posted a new tutorial this morning using a bossa-esque picking pattern for an old David Bowie song called "As the World Falls Down." You might enjoy that one too :)
@@StarlightUkes , I just use it with pop songs that in my opinion need some rhytmic feel, but strumming would be too much. For example Jake Owen - What We Ain't Got, also love it with Big Yellow Taxi from Joni Mitchell (alternating between soft strum and this pull-tap pattern). I know that Big Yellow Taxi was played with rock´n´roll strum, but I like it more softer. Definitely gonna follow Your "As the World Falls Down" tutorial. I really love bossanova or little jazzy feel picking or strumming patterns. Greetings from Estonia :)
:D That is a very undeserved compliment as Astrud has one of the most natural, authentic voices I've ever hear. But thank you anyway :) Yes to the Low G, it gives that beautiful Low end that's so necessary (in my humble opinion)
Thank you Christy. You wouldn't know it but I was having a very frustrated day that day. I drove to the park and said to myself, "Damn it, I'm going to record a video or else!" :) I had been wanting to get up the courage to record for UA-cam and this day I did it. It's still difficult to get in front of the camera, I know now that that's typical. I'm working through it all the time. They say the camera is violent, that's why they call it "shooting" This is a long comment to just say thank you :)
Fantastic tutorial. Why from your car though? Love your voice too. New subscriber, new Patreon patron, new Fan. I love your patient way of teaching, (I don't know if I would have that type of patience). Loved your video of the PeeWee Ukulele Orchestra. We simply have to get your name out there more. I am going to share your videos and increase people's awareness of your talents. I truly do appreciate this tutorial. Thank you doesn't seem enough.
Oh man Sean! Haha, I should have read the older comments first, I've been working backward :) Thanks for being a Patron! You give some very nice compliments :)
Oh that sounds beautiful! That's my next endeavor; learn the Portuguese lyrics. They have such a beautiful flow and rhythm. Thanks for watching Keopi :)
Why yes, I have a "Low G". It sounds like you have a "High G" which means your string is thinner than mine and tuned an octave higher. I love the low G, you can get one at any music store. Just tell them you want a low g. BUT!!!...... I don't like the "wound Low G" some people do, but I get the nylon. You'll know because the wound G has a metal coil coating, like a guitar string. To me, they squeak and don't sound the same as the rest of the strings. Again, it's just preference :) Have you been able to play the picking pattern regardless?
Dani Joy Music Ohhh no wonder I was confused on why it sounded lower, I’m going to see if I could buy a ukulele like that. I’ve been able to play the picking pattern but it just sounds off because my string is an octave higher, once I get the Low G ukulele I should be able to play it properly, thank you so much!
Cool. If you have a budget to get a second ukulele with a low G, that's the best because then you have one of each. I'm a dealer for KoAloha Ukuleles, let me know if you want one of these babies! This particular model (KTM-00 Koa tenor) is $1299.99.
Thank you! I'm playing the delectable Ko'Aloha Koa tenor KTM-00. All solid koa wood, handcrafted in Honolulu Hawaii. This ukulele is absolutely the love of my life! I'm a dealer, order one through me today!
Hi I recently started ukulele and my first string (G) is a higher pitch than yours. I tried tuning it down to lower sounding G but then it's too loose and just buzzes and sounds terrible. How do I tune my ukulele for this song to sound like yours? I think mine is a concert ukulele, not sure if that makes a difference
I’m also very new to ukulele. From what I understand… You have high “g” strings. She uses low “g” strings. Only that fourth string differs. You can probably change your strings, but the best way is to hold different ukuleles as she probably does…
Hello Cak, (Dani here) oh no don't do that! :D It's an easy mistake to make. I have a different string on my instrument that allows me to tune that way. You can have yours switched at any music store. Or you can buy a new uke so you have one of each (that's what most people do, which is why I have an ukulele store :) I like to use a Romero Low G for the string. It's squeakless! I'm happy to answer any more questions for you in email support@starlightukes.com
Hi Olivia, that's because I play what we call a Low G ukulele string. It sounds a little more like guitar. I don't even know what to do with a high G! :D If you're interested in switching yours, I sell my favorite set of Low G strings on my website Starlightukes.com/strings If you have white strings then they are Aquila which come standard from the factory. They are really high tension and difficult even for my tough fingers. I would recommend switching out the whole set to the soft PHDs, designed by ukulele artist Jason Arimoto. Hope this helps!
Hi Kim, how so? Are you having trouble with the barres? Remember to keep your shoulders back and down, shoulder blades tight against the rip cage, but also comfortable and relaxed. Relax your elbow to your side and gently raise your hand up. Make sure the ukulele is facing forward and try one of those ninth chords (2333 = G-2, C-3, E-3, A-3) with as little pressure as you can whilst making a clean sound. It's important to remember not to twist the wrist like a swan. That'll give you problems down the road. Then let me know how it went.
your vocal tone is so mellow and beautiful. wow.
Thank you so much!
i guess Im kind of off topic but does anybody know of a good place to stream new series online ?
@Randall William i would suggest FlixZone. You can find it on google :)
