Notes:
1) There is about a minute cut in the AUD near the end of Lovelight. There are gaps in the AUD between songs.
2) While the primary AUD did not have Me & Bobby McGee, it did have a significantly longer crowd intro and outro than shnid=88816.
3) The right channel of the AUD was low during the last two songs. This was adjusted.
You came for the Hard to Handle (@ 57:27). Stay and come for the rest.
I'll take Morning Dew for 200. Wow it's the daily double☺
Is there "an-a-dead-da-tive". 🌞
Oh, my god. Thank you.
Jerry fell to knees and played some of that HtH solo.
Yees! I still remember the first time I heard this recording in vinyl format many years ago and when I heard this Hard to Handle... OMG... OMG!!!
LOL - you read minds too !
7:27 Bob giving the tapers advice on how to tape LOL
Happy 8/6/71 day everyone! Best GD show + Jerry solo ever.
I came for the music, stayed for the fans! I miss live music...🙊😭
I'm nuts for Cumberland Blues, and I gotta say, that is one REALLY GOOD Cumberland Blues.
I'm gonna stay right here and listen to this show.
Great call!.
Talked me into it!

KREUTZMANN IS THE SHIT. Never skipped a beat. And NEVER missed a single performance. That Hard to handle is SMOKING HOT. Thanks...PeaceOrElse

Main reason im skippin any more dead and co shows. Aint the same with out good ol bill.
One of the best Berta’s ever 8/6/71😊
I was at this show back when the Dead were the real Dead. NRPS opened then Dead came out of the gates with a screaming Bertha to set the mood. Hard to imagine but most of these tunes were brand new that night for over 90% of the audience including me. Just play this at as loud as your system can handle and you start to get the feel of this venue that had a capacity of only 3500. I was about 20 "rows" back, left of center on the open floor. Part of the reason Weir handles the first part of the HTH solo is Jerry busted a string and was standing there putting a new one on. Then blasts out that solo that got the audience hyper engaged....everybody was pogoing around screaming and ecstatic. WOS, you folks captured the feel of that unbelieveable show perfectly. Thanks you, thank you, thank you !!!
Listening to the Morning Dew. I got released from the Army in early '69. We were still at war with VietNam during this show. This was so powerful at this time for so many of us. Hard to understand that we have been in continual war since 9/11/01. That aside, the energy, the soul, the compassion of these amazing people opened so many minds to the real Us and Them situation in the world that is so in your face obvious today. Great work WOS !!
@IzitAllGoUnder So glad you're here to tell this story. Always wondered what took Jerry so long to get going on that solo. When you say he was "standing there trying to fix it" was a crew member helping him, or was he doing it himself?
In any case you have to wonder: without that pressure to get the string on in time, would one of the most famous Jerry solos of all time have come out the other end...? :) :)
@@WallofSound65 He was just standing there, guitar still strapped as normal and he changes the broken string like the pro that he was. A crew guy came out but didn't look like Jerry wanted any help. It was amazing how he just drops back in like nothing happened and blows everybody away. That's why the whole place went nutz at the end. Jerry was smiling and staggering around like he was amazed by what he just did.
@@IzitAllGoUnder Everything becomes a lot less harsh when I turn off my screen. But then I miss out on stuff like this. Balance. Good luck brother
So incredibly cool that you got to see a show like this live! Did you happen to see The Stones there the next year? Thank you for the insider insight on the 'Hard to Handle' - I've listened to an audience recording of this version for years and always wondered why the crowd's energy EXPLODES midway through. Very, very cool, thanks again.
Hard to Handle indeed...
man ...what a repertoire they had 70 to 72.
St. Stephen,😵 Trucking into The Other One,😵.What a beautiful psychedelic cacophony of noise, that’ll guarantee steal your face.GBY Wall of Sound & again Mahalo for the sounds,& the memories...
EVERY TUNE OF THIS SHOW ROCKS!! My 87 year old mother was dancing with me in the kitchen today while the music never stopped….Her only concern was all the screaming input from Pig at the finale… God bless my mom and these moments in time wit the GLORIOUS GRATEFUL DEAD!!!! I love this show… El Paso was beautiful as were ALL the rest of the other tunes which enrich my soul!! Thank you WOS…!!!

@wallofsound can you pin this?

8/6/71 is everything that is great about the early Dead. A top ten show for me. The crisp sound is a delight. Hard to Handle wins people over. The dancing woo’s get em every time.
This might be the BEST set ever.
I will tell you in 20 years when I've heard all live-shows haha
Wow! I was there, and many say it’s their best show ever. Billed as the “Grateful Dead Dance” (open floor) this recording of this historic concert is just incredible. Thanks to whoever did this!!
BLESS THE TAPERS❤These sound matrixs are so awesome. Beautiful sound, this is as close as your gonna get to this show today! Close your eyes and it's August 6, 1971 at a dead show. Out of sight! Thanks WoS. Top notch as always my friend. ❤💀⚘️⚡️
My first show.
Classic Pig on "Mr. Charlie"...great Jerry lead...whole band was stoked!
Ha! AwRight!
Great early 70s show ... The 5 piece always has the stripped-down sound!!! Thanks from Dead Jim in PA ...💀
What a beautiful gift 🎁 from WOS. My day just got better. Forever grateful 🙏 WOS
Dude this hard to handle melts my face off. I’ve listened to Scarlet/Fire 5/8/77 and Althea 5/16/80 a million billion times and this Jerry solo at the end is up there in the rarefied dew. Automatic shivers, hair standing on end
⚡️ 💀
I’ve had this cassette for 40 years and am so happy to hear the full version. I received mine from a great friend Jim B, RIP. He had the best collection of reel to reel known to man. We would stay up for days flipping cassettes and mailing them off. Those were the days my friend. Thanks.
That Bertha is certainly a ripper out of the gate but this hard to handle has always just done it for me. Followed by a real powerful Casey Jones going into the break. So good. Just so goddamn good. The second set start to finish is a psychedelic dream come true. Liquid gold. Even the tuning is is trippy. Boys were definitely feeling it this night. Legendary show coupled with superb quality. Thanks for the post Wall. Been spending a lot of time in 70 and 71 again. Not sure why the critics don't get it? Ah what do they know anyway. Keith was a better piano player, but he was no Pigpen when it came to channeling energy through music, but then again who is. They polished everything up for the 72 tour overseas, but I'm still a sucker for the edgier 69-71 shows and this one is gem. Truckin'->Drums->Other One->Me and My Uncle-The Other One, I mean come on.
The Pig Era is the best era. Many great shows through every era but the 68-72 era is my fave. Been on the bus since late 1973 as a 14 year old kid. Saw many shows from mid 70's on always bummed I never got to see the Pig Dead. Thankful this unbelievable show is recorded to enjoy in
2023🙏♥️
Amongst the many highlights from this show, I must say that Sugar Magnolia is sharp as a tack.
Fire Hard to Handle version
Just simply a killer show. This is the Grateful Dead at their very best. Things to consider....This is the last of the "Warlocks" shows, as Mickey had left the band earlier in the year, right before Keith would join....and would be the last Pigpen Lovelight until I think 1983 when Bobby breaks it out and turns it to his own never really doing justice to Pigpen but it will become the set ending foot stomper that I will encounter years later in the '80s. Bonus plus is the critical 1 minute of Lovelight that is usually missing in most recordings but is present in this recording, for which I am eternally thankful to WoS for including. Finally, this is the show I introduce people to who have never heard the Dead.
They would play a few more Pigpen Lovelights in 71 and 4 in 1972 ending on 5/24/72 at the Strand Lyceum during Europe ’72. The bust out was 10/16/81 ironically in Europe as well, at the Melkweg in Amsterdam. Once in ‘81, twice in ‘82, 0 in ‘83 and 4 times in ‘84. ✌️🐊🥀
Dude, thank you. I need to listen to more '72 shows. Plus, this audio has the complete Lovelight, which I had "lost" until now.
Nice early version of Loser, sweet Susie
Thanks Wall! Looks like another great show. I know I speak for every other head out there that we certainly appreciate your hard work and dedication to what you do. Spreading love, joy and happiness to the masses is a wonderful thing, and we certainly appreciate it!! I appreciate you my brother!
not JUST another great show; strong candidate for greatest ever! the energy, the setlist, it has never ceased to amaze me. another poster was right about the 'dullness' of the soundboard; only had the straight aud for years and that is fantastic
Mr Charlie is so funky !
Thank you for yer service 💙 Great day to be alive.
Bertha always brings a joyous smile to my soul.
Peace, flowers, and brownies.
I needed that!
Gracias!
Thanks for reminding me. I had one of the worst days of my life!

Little more need be said. This is a really great show from what might have been The Dead's best year. Well Done WOS!

Definitely in my top 5 favorite shows.
One of my favorite shows when I was younger and collected tapes Thanks for posting
Many worlds I've come since I first left home!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Beautiful Brokedown Palace here.. My coworker and I threw this on after we closed the bar we work at. We both sang along. Great way to end our night.
Makes me wish I wasn't 9 months old when this show took place but was up front soaking in the sweet sounds in LA.
This is gonna get cranked this afternoon. Thanks Wall 👍😎🏄♂️

Man you can really hear the energy of the crowd in this one
Cool show!!
Woot. This is a good one 👍.
Some folks trust in reason, others trust in might. PITB.
This show man, wow! Thanks for the upload
My old friend Mickey was at this show and was always telling me how great it was. It wasn't until he gave me a copy of the show years later that I arrived at the same conclusion. The Hard to Handle is absolutely incredible. Thanks Mickey (where ever you are.)
🪘🥁🎤🎧✌️❤️🔥🎵🌹🕊🧬💥🎉👍💭👌
I’ve never met Mickey Hart, but would love to. He was also a friend to Walter Cronkite.
He’s an acknowledged as an authority on percussion and drumming on a global level.
This is directly due to him respectfully absorbing all he possibly can from masters across the globe from which he’s played with and studied.
He’s also the only one I’m aware of, who plays “ THE BEAM ❤️. “
Love the "hey you with the microphone.." wonder if it was these tapers? Lol
It was a different taper they were talking to. We were already in the right spot, thus the audible "right here".
@@craigtodd9517 Thank you Craig!
One of the great loser versions I've ever heard.Simply awesome. Thanks for posting it's much appreciated
Terrific Tape! Loved every last dig.

I think I was at this show...no kidding!!💀🌹
Loving this mr Charlie. 350ug of bears brew starting to take hold. Think this may be the perfect show this evening since I can't seem to turn it off . Peace and love and happiness to all the deadheads in the world young and old. I love you all.
Take care of yourself and enjoy. Report back tomorrow 😀
Well I'm on hard to handle at the moment and hitting the deem pipe and if its Jerry's notes are bouncing out of tv directly into my soul giving me light. I'm starting to understand why Jerry's playing really is for the working man. I hate projecting and can't state what was in his mind but this music is meant to recognize the workingman's struggles and how the working class are handed a raw deal.
So hes gonna play his ass off and give every piece of himself till the absolute end with his playing because he wants to give the people who work and hustle all day as much joy as humanly possible. His playing is honest and pure and our society is toxic and corrupt. He gives us hope in such a harsh world. I love him. I am eternally grateful for this band, the deadheads that allowed them the freedom to play as they wanted, and the deadheads who keep the music alive like you do WoS.
NOBODY DOES IT LIKE THIS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Smokin hot energy show, a favorite.
Nothing against Keith and Donna but, This is The DEAD I grew up listening to.. always loved how Pig kept their feet firmly in country/blues/funk! Thanks for posting this, probably the Best I've ever heard.. and that's saying something.
Well said.

This is a gift
Three minutes in ... Feels like a good 'un! 🤸
my favorite channel for Dead on YT, hands down best shows in the best quality!!! thanks WOS !!!
Thank you, beautiful show
This show is incredible. This is some of the best Gibson tone I've ever heard from Jerry!!! Neck pickup just screaming on these solos. Any idea what he was playing that night? I know he played that yellow Les Paul with the P-90s during the 71 tour and Strats, but this sounds like PAF humbuckers. He almost sounds like Peter Green at times.
Guitar scholars. Thank you. I love people who can hear and know this stuff
I was there ... still have my ticket stub ....
Great show here 😊

Very Lucky! Thank you Boys! Naomi
What the hell was pigpen up to during Hard to Handle? Crowd going seriously nuts!!!!!
It was Jerry stealin faces
Yeah, it wasn't Pigpen, it was Jerry. Apparently, according to those who were in attendance, Jerry actually did some on stage theatrics (which was rare for him) and did some deep knee bends during that final jam. That, AND he was fucking killing it, theatrics or not...
SPECIAL 50TH ANNIVERSARY STORY!!: Everyone talks about what happened when they were at these two shows at the Hollywood Palladium. In 1971, I was a surfer hippie from Orange County-roll one and go surfing-everybody understands that. The only bummer about ‘71 is all these surfers from OC became Jesus Freaks. Sorry about that, but it was not my fault. It would be interesting to see where all those losers are now. So, I was 17 & I bought two tickets to take a very pretty SurfGirl to see the Dead at the Hollywood Palladium’s August 6th show. We met a friend with his date there & scored a table to sit & watch the show. That was even more kool because the tables were hard to get & they had a great view of the show, the stage & the crowd. This SurfGirl had a crush on me & I thought a first date seeing the Grateful Dead was a Special Thing. WELL HECK, IT WAS A SPECIAL THING. Jerry Garcia was 30 feet away & played pedal-steel for a full set with NRPS, then he played a full night with our boys. It only took 15 minutes into NRPS when my SurfGirl excused herself to the bathroom-well that’s sort of normal. So after 20 minutes I thought it was still normal, then it turned into 1 hour, then 1 ½ hours, then 3 hours, and of course, the whole show. Since it was a Dead show & a great night, I thought she found her true psychedelic SurfDude, and she was out dancing with him. I thought I was bum-out-of-luck. BUT, when the lights came back on in the Hollywood Palladium, my SurfBabe came back to our table. Her hair was wet & she was drained from crying for 3+ hours in the toilet stall. I asked her what was wrong & she screamed “what is your problem?…you didn’t even notice I was gone....I told you I was going to the bathroom….and you left me in there for 4 hours….why didn’t you save me from these hairy miscreants?…” What? Really? What?? I am so sorry beautiful young surfgirl, if only I had known, I would have risked all to save you from the hippies-even getting thrown out of the Hollywood Palladium for hanging out in the wrong bathroom. That would have been a small price to pay! Except Jeez, it never really occurred to me that girls hide in bathroom stalls & cry when they get scared. I tried to be understanding, but I was not sensitive enough. Things did not get better after that. To say the least, it was a very long drive back to Huntington Beach.
To all the gals who read this, I honestly thought we could have a nice date & evening. I was young too. I was not trying to take a teenage girl to a free-love hippie fest.
The crowd was amazing. True Story. No BS
A great story, thanks for sharing. Goes to show you don't ever know....
