The US Army's brand new Typhon launcher hasn't been in operational use for more than a year, and yet it's so powerful that it's already been at the center of a major international geopolitical crisis. Normally, you need to be an F-35 or a Patriot missile system to be at the center of such international intrigue. The whole controversy started in April 2024, when a battery of these launchers were forward deployed to Luzon in the Philippines.

It was their first ever major test to see how they might actually work in the field. At the annual Balochistan Joint Military exercise between the United States and the Filipino armed Forces, you see, the Typhon launcher is central to U.S. military's evolve strategy to counter rival adversaries, which is diplomatic speak for Russia and China. And so confirming that it could actually be supported anywhere in the world is key to deterrence.

As a Filipino, China whining about our government allowing the US to rebuild military bases and allowing the typhon missile system within our territory again is hypocritical. They literally built military bases WITHIN our 200 nautical miles Exclusive Economic Zone complete with docks and silos. Also keep in mind, there are no foreign military bases in our archipelago decades ago, but since China is such a lovely and cuddly neighbor and due to our lack of military capability, we are inclined to ask the US for help by virtue of our alliance and to solidify the 1951 Mutual Defense Treaty.
What's funny is, they're asking us to remove them yet they act like pirates on our very waters. They're just giving us more reason to let the US remain.

To be perfectly fair, if China were to put a bunch of cruise missile batteries in the Caribbean and let’s say Mexico, the USA would probably be quite upset too.
That being said, China has massively benefited from the American lead world order, and now it’s trying to usurp it for itself. 13:30 Calling the Iskander missile hypersonic is misleading. It can get up to mach 5.9 (according to Wikipedia) but it is not a hypersonic cruise missile or glide vehicle. Iskander is a ballistic missile, and those have been able to reach speeds above mach 5 for decades.
Exactly this. The German V2 rocket, the first ballistic missile in the world reached hypersonic speeds. That did not make it a hypersonic weapon. Hypersonic speed AND maneuverability during those speeds is what makes it a hypersonic weapon.
@@196cupcake Russia weaponizing the word hypersonic is so annoying. They just air launched their ballistic missile, but were able to sell it to make it sound much more scary.
soooo hypersonic doesn't mean faster than sound??
If a weapon travels faster than sound, then it is hypersonic!
Stop changing the meaning of words, please. :)
@@morningmadera that's super sonic. Hypersonic means when you need to start worrying about the thermal effects of air. But hypersonic missiles mean they can use the hypersonic flight regime to maneuver, rather than just in the boost or coast phases. Hence why not all ballistic missiles are hypersonic.
@@morningmadera Hypersonic usually refers to mach 5 or higher, 5x the speed of sound. Hypersonic missile usually refers so missiles that can maneuver at mach 5 or higher. Many ballistic missiles can reach max. speeds higher than mach 5, but since they can't maneuver at those speeds, at least not well, they're generally not called hypersonic missiles. Terminology is arbitrary, but for it to work it needs to be consistent. "Technical," a truck with a big gun in the back, is another example of kind of stupid terminology, but it stuck, so we go with it.
Maybe Santa Claus can gift the Philippines a few Typhon batteries for Christmas.

Your story about a mislaid rifle reminds me about a mislaid tank, it was a prototype of a heavy US tank which programme wasn't proceeded with. Anyway it was used in an exercise and the crew were told to park away somewhere on the testing ground. They did, finished their service and went home. All good except that the army lost track of it and couldn't find it the crew had been demobilised and dispersed, probably it wasn't considered too important. It was found some years later by someone hunting and whoops that's where it is. They eventually retrieved it and I think it is now in a museum, so losing a rifle may be forgivable but losing a 70-80 ton tank may provoke some comment.
Today a missing rifle, tomorrow a broken arrow.

The Kinzhal isn't a hypersonic, it's an air-launched derivative of the Iskander-M. All ballistic missiles can have different flight profiles, depressed trajectory is one of them. So an air-launched and depressed trajectory will look much flatter. Ballistic missiles can also maneuver to some degree, such as Israel's series of Sparrow garget missiles.
Did I actually show up before the Typhon? No, had I showed up BEFORE the Typhon, I would not be here now.

Typhon launchers can launch SM-6 and Tomahawk missiles, the first can counter ballistic missiles and the latter is a cruise missile that can evade radars.

Typhon looks like a quick way for the US Army to get back the capabilities it lost when GLCM was retired due to the INF treaty. This in addition to conventional cruise missiles and Standard missile capability. I'm wondering if the Army is considering buying off the shelf ESSM canisters, which have 4 missiles, albeit shorter range ones, each.
The USMC can probably use Typhon too, for the same reasons as the Army. The Navy can use the launchers (and possibly is already) to use on small ships such as USV Ranger to provide extra VLS cells to a Burke destroyer it would escort.

While Iskanders fly at hypersonic speed, they are not really considered hypersonic missiles because they fly a ballistic trajectory. This is the same as the Kinzhal missile which Russia tries to pass off as Hypersonic.
"Other types of weapons, such as traditional ballistic missiles, may achieve hypersonic speeds but are not typically classified as hypersonic weapons due to lacking the use of aerodynamic lift to allow their reentry vehicles to maneuver under guided flight within the atmosphere."
Russia's Zircon and China's DF-17 both use hypersonic glide vehicles though.
