    This makes it make so much more sense! I'm that weird age where I was "too little" to play with the big kids during d&d's original big boom, and now I want to get started, with no one to play with.

    • @SoloDungeonCrawler
      @SoloDungeonCrawler  2 роки тому +3

      Hi Jennifer. I'm glad I helped make sense out of it. I think solo is a massively under rated way to play and can imagine its tricky to find a group for OD&D. There's plenty of groups playing old school clones of these older editions but I haven't seen anyone approach it the way it used to be played. The great thing about solo play is that you can take your time without and craft and much richer campaign in my opinion. Good luck getting started. Let me know how it goes.

    Character 3 had a re-roll allowed. OD&D's men and magic specifies that "Hopeless Characters" can be re-rolled, a hopeless character is defined as one with more than one very low roll (3-6), with both a 5 in wisdom and a 6 in charisma that elf could have rolled again for better stats.

    So I know it's far too late for this to matter, but I do have a highly minor nitpick (well, maybe not so minor depending on who you ask). The rule in OD&D, as written, about being able to raise prime requisites on various ratios from other stats is a major point of confusion. Later editions and retroclones have confused it more, and there *are* those who believe that what you did here is correct. However, there's a fairly sizeable camp, based on extensive research and testimony, that holds that this rule, as written in the LBBs, is not a real score change, but is *solely* for the purpose of exp gain, and only above 9. Not real increases, virtual increases. So, a Fighting man with 12 Str, 11 Int, and 15 Wis, can use Int on a 2:1 ratio above 9 and Wis 3:1 above 9 to *virtually* increase Str for xp only. Thus, you have the base of 12, then +1 from int (11-9=2, 2/2 =1), then +2 from wis (15 - 9 = 6, 6/3 = 2), = 15 Str for xp bonus, but still otherwise 12 str. Again, this was confused by Basic and AD&D and most of OD&D's retroclones (Fantastic Medieval Campaigns is the only one that seems to get this right), but it does seem to be the consensus in much of the community that this is how it worked.
    Whether this is actually good design is a different question entirely, and a real point shift may be better. At least for an RPG by modern understanding of the genre. In the old days, where characters were basically player avatars meant to be generated extremely quickly and that players would usually have more than one of, and where gameplay was far more alike to a wargame and relied more on a player's own cleverness than numbers, it's actually quite an elegant rule that makes the numbers not matter as much, because suddenly it's no longer super important to have a super high prime requisite. Other than the xp gain, there's no actual mechanical difference between a Fighting-Man with 16 str and a Fighting Man with 6 Str. (Damage bonus for high str is Greyhawk, not LBB.) Which very much fits the wargamey philosophy of the early game. The same applies for the other LBB classes and their prime requisites. The other 3 abilities also affect every character the exact same way, so it's still generally fair. It starts to break down slightly but not too much when you add Thief from Greyhawk, but even then it's not so terrible.

    I bought the brown box in 1974 and had no idea what to do with it a few months later though I found a group that was playing. But they were playing a lot differently than anybody plays today - sort of like playing Simon says with a sociopath as DM. But later on we evolved into a more traditional style where mostly we went through dungeons fighting things and solving puzzles..We rolled 3D6 in order for characters but we’d roll up half a dozen or a dozen at a time and pick the most interesting ones. That way it meant something if he rolled up a Ranger or a Paladin. And we ditched Chainmail for the D20 very quickly. We took turns DMing and once we got to fifth level or so almost no one ever died (though I’m still pissed off about my friends getting my 12th level wizard killed!) and I don’t remember ever having a total party kill. By the early 80s I wanted more depth and so I started DMing almost exclusively and trying to do things that were closer to what modern DnD is like. My original gaming group however pretty much just kept doing the same old thing.

    • @SoloDungeonCrawler
      @SoloDungeonCrawler  2 роки тому +2

      Hi John. That's a very interesting story. Almost all the content I find online about OD&D seems to rarely involve people who actually played it in the mid to late 70's. My personal goal with my campaign is to try and get as close to how it was originally played as possible. You mention that you used chainmail combat and then switched to the D20 (Alternative Combat System) which sounds interesting. OD&D combat in general seems so widely confused. I'm trying to get to grips with it myself without being influenced by later editions as where the OD&D books are silent, its hard not to fill the blanks with later rules.

      I played D&D in the 1970's - original 3 booklets in the White Box (for me about 1976), only later supplemented with Greyhawk (I didn't see a copy before 1978). I found the rules systems of Empire of The Petal Throne RPG & Metamorphosis Alpha (both based on the D20 D&D rules system) helpful in understanding original D&D. Both these games have a campaign setting & system for populating Wilderness (using keys) with encounter areas (similar to C&S 'Places of Mystery'). The boardgame Dungeon! is illustrative of how a multilevel Underworld or dungeon might operate & is close to D&D in concept. EOPT is close to OD&D as there is no Thief character class - it has assassin-spy-tracker as a Group III original skill (EoPT has skills) which enables character (of any class) to hide in shadows & pass unseen (success roll required). Was I playing OD&D as it was meant to be played? I still don't know how it was meant to be played as the Gygax & Arneson camps have different views on the matter. My OD&D dungeons had a Rice Bubble Monster that could be dissolved with milk - 'Snap, Crackle, Pop.'

    Love the concept of solo OD&D play using Chainmail!
    Multiple fighters are handy to include in an adventuring party. Some variety in weapons can be handy - if you have enough gold pieces to afford them.

    • @SoloDungeonCrawler
      @SoloDungeonCrawler  2 роки тому +4

      Thanks Fred. As I’m sticking to the first three booklets only, their will be no variable weapon damage in combat. Once I’ve explored the first three booklets and got a good feel of the game I’ll probably consider including later supplements. I know chain mail used weapon classes which granted more attacks or less depending on the rating of the weapon. I’ll be using the alternate combat system for the hit probabilities though. I’ve written an article on OD&D combat which I’m going to turn into a video soon as I can to explain OD&D combat in detail. This will be my opinion on how I think the rules were intended to work for combat.

  • @michaellinke6448
    @michaellinke6448 2 роки тому +9

    I would have avoided recruiting both a dwarf and an elf. Not because of the Dwarf vs Elf enmity, but because Dwarves and Elves have attack-on-site reactions with Goblins and Orcs respectively. If you drop either the Dwarf or Elf, you'll have the option of dealing non-violently with either Goblins or Orcs.

    • @SoloDungeonCrawler
      @SoloDungeonCrawler  2 роки тому +6

      Hi Michael. This is an interesting point but to some extent my understanding of the rules is different… there is actually no mention of enmity across the three OD&D booklets between dwarf and elf (atleast not the edition I own). Also, the only mention of attack on site reactions is in the chain mail rules and this is just for dwarves, and concerns Goblins and Kobolds, however, a contradiction exists that seems to supersede this rule which was obviously written for fantasy war gaming and not D&D. In men & magic it explains that dwarves speak the languages of Goblins and Kobolds, which doesn’t really make sense if they are unable to negotiate. I think I need to gather some more information to make sure I’m understanding the rules correctly.

    • @michaellinke6448
      @michaellinke6448 2 роки тому +6

      @@SoloDungeonCrawler Sorry, you're right. The goblin entry says "they attack dwarves and gnomes on sight". It looks like the emnity between Elves and Orcs was introduced in BX or BECMI, and not present in OD&D.
      As far as the contradiction between knowing the language, but attacking on sight, I always assumed this was to allow them to communicate with a subdued captive.

    • @SoloDungeonCrawler
      @SoloDungeonCrawler  2 роки тому +3

      @@michaellinke6448 yeah I can see how that would work actually. I guess the question is does the chain mail stuff apply in this context, I guess like all things to do with OD&D there is never a straight answer :D it’s definitely something I’m gonna look into and see if I can clarify it a little further. Thanks for bringing it to my attention

    Brilliant. Love seeing someone promote this version of the game. (I attempt to capture this too in Sword & Spell.)
    Couple of observations:
    (1) at 5:19, it's noted Character One has a Charisma of 11, instead of the 12 rolled. (The character sheet has the accurate score however);
    (2) your method for adjusting ability scores is one interpretation. The other is that the scores go unchanged but that certain abilities contribute "virtual points" to the primary ability of the character class to create the score of a seventh ability, the prime requisite. For example, for Lunis the Acolyte, her ability scores would remain STR 9, INT 12, and WIS 11, and her prime requisite score would be 11 (WIS) + 1 (+1 per 2 points of INT over 9) + 0 (+1 per 3 points of STR over 9), which would leave her 1 point short of having +5% bonus to XP.
    Edit: Also, no [other] relatives identified as heirs?
    Looking forward to future episodes!

    • @SoloDungeonCrawler
      @SoloDungeonCrawler  2 роки тому +1

      Thanks for the pointers. I cover the ability score adjustments for gaining experience points in episode 2 or 3 (I think). I think the later editions influenced my original interpretation of the rules (which I'm trying to avoid!) The characters currently have no relatives in the story. This is something I hope to cover in the future but I'm taking the journey step by step as this is a learning experience for me.

    • @SoloDungeonCrawler
      @SoloDungeonCrawler  2 роки тому +3

      I hear ya. Luckily I use my own solo rules to generate everything and that includes the background story for characters and the adventure so it’s actually not as much work as it seems :) I anticipate there will definitely be deaths. I find them a little less likely in solo as I can consider things a lot more strategically. I think in a group there tends to be a little more chaos. However I’ve been working that spontaneity into my own solo rules to incorporate character actions that are white surprising even to me.
