In defence of Karius good sir ,I feel you need to watch the assault Ramos committed on the guy in the same game . IIRC was even a club statement later on confirming he was suffering concussion from the Ramos "challenge" . Same game he tried to amputate Mo's arm too
That's true, and I'm a little surprised Alfie didn't mention it, but it sadly doesn't change the fact that the match destroyed Karius' career and confidence
@@F1Krazy It destroyed his brain. Years after the CL final he still struggled with evening games due to the stadium lights fucking with his vision. His career was destroyed by an injury and he should not habe been on this list.
As a Liverpool fan who watched the 2018 UCL final, I still feel really bad for Karius years later, I'm really gutted with how his career has gone since that peformance.
Likewise. I really feel that he should have been given a chance to redeem himself at Liverpool. As much as I love Klopp for what he did for us I feel that he must bear a large amount of the blame for what happened as it was clear Karius wasn't right after taking that knock to the head
The fact of the matter is that Karius was routinely considered the weak link in the squad before that final happened. I think he was a mediocre goalkeeper who was brought to the top of european football by a star studded team. Him being a Besiktas goalkeeper is more reflective of his true level than at the Champion's league final He is not a bad keeper, just was not where he belonged in that squad.
Sunderland had an awful squad at the time and been stinking out the place for a number of years, it was not just Johnson. Great fans at the club who deserved better. Hopefully better times to come.
This whole list could be brazilian who were in the 7x1 Dante, Luiz Gustavo, Maicon, Júlio César, Bernard, Oscar, and, to a lesser extent, David Luiz, Fernandinho and Fred all took significant blows to their careers
Also, for a less well known one, brazilian defender Bruno Viana, after joining Flamengo and playing a few good games at the start of the season, made one of the most bizarre series of mistakes I have seen agaisnt Union La Calera on a Libertadores game, and has never been the same ever since
I believe some of those Brazillian footballers during that infamous World Cup semifinal vs Germany had to retire immediately, like the goalkeeper Julio Cesar.
As a fluminense fan, I wouldnt say Fred since he went on to become the top scorer in brazilian league that year and he had a regular career, even playing well for atletico mineiro until he came back to fluminense and had to retire because of a medical issue which made him see things in double 😢
@@elaychscrazyworld4173 Calhanoglu and Davies come to mind from recent players. Best all time switch might be Thierry Henry switching to striker from winger.
I had heard of Moacir Barbosa before. Apparently, many Brazil supporters essentially decided he was dead to them after the Maracanaço, to the point that when he passed away, there was a headline in some paper reading "Barbosa Died Again".
Moacir Barbosa was once regarded as one of the best goalkeepers on the planet, but one mistake in the wrong game condemned him to punishment for the rest of his life. Spurned by his country, he was blamed for a national tragedy, carrying that weight for 50 years. It is undoubtedly one of the saddest stories that the game has ever produced. Many people in Brazil said Barbosa didn't play his best due to lack of patriotism because he was black.
Maicosuel at Udinese is a great example, came in as a hyped up prospect from Brazil nicknamed "O Mago" (the magician), taking a penalty against Braga in the final playoff game against Braga, where he brandished what can only be described as the most pathetic panenka anyone's ever seen. Udinese lost the game and havent been back since, and Maicosuel played another few poor seasons before he vanished.
It's entirely unfair to talk about Karius without discussing the contact to his head earlier in the game where he should have been replaced. He was clearly disoriented and struggled. His struggle was not entirely of his making, if the club had noted the issues he would have been better placed to return following that game.
Would be quite cool to have a video on the 10 most outrageous/unique things to happen on live tv football matches in the top leagues (football or non-football related)
Alexander Filimonov - goalkeeper of Spartak Moscow and Russia national team. Russia needed a win against Ukraine during Euro 2000 qualifiers(back then the countries were just rivals and "frenemies", before Putler started his insane policy). Russia led 1-0, but Filimonov conceded a goal on 88th minutes from a ball that fell from his hands after an easy freekick. After that he played just 4 matches for a national team and never played as well as he played before on club level
Most people hated Russia then too especially politically as Russia still controlled Russia and exploiting Ukraine's wealth, also because of the invasion of Georgia and Moldova.. there was always hatred for Russia since the holomdomor or the ten million dead by Stalin.
A Brazilian here... never heard of Moacir Barbosa. Brazilians talk about the defeat to Uruguay in our own soil as a tragedy just because of that... it happened there. I don't remember anyone ever making it about the goalkeeper.
If you have Ginola in you should have Duncan Ferguson, Duncan was playing in Scotland when he headbutted a defender he was sent off and sent to prison and never played for Scotland again
Georgios Katidis, captained Greece U-17, U-19 and U-21 national teams and at the height of his fame when so many foreign clubs were looking to sign him, he decided he was cool with a certain toothbrush mustachio Villain. Haven't heard from him since, what an idiot.
Alexandre Jankewitz got sent off in the first two minutes of Southampton's famous 9-0 loss to Man Utd and was never seen again. We had high hopes for him and then chucked him in the bin.
Marc Batra was forever doomed in Spain after the 2014 Copa del Rey final against Real Madrid. No one remembers he scored the equalizer (being a CB) after Madrid went 1 - 0 up. People only remember his disastrous run being completely outpaced by Gareth Bale for the 2 - 1 in the 87th minute. After that, he went from being a very promising La Masia graduate to being forever labelled as a "soft defender". He left Barcelona one year later, and despite he was good enough for a while for both Dortmund and Betis, I doubt he's ever returned to the Spanish national team. What a shame...
can we please have a video about the neglect cymru premier league? despite having the 3rd oldest football association in the world, wales only got its own football pyramid in the early 90s, and 5 teams from wales still refuse to join. this is a wierd situation that deserves its own video i think.
Ali Dia claimed to be a cousin of George Weah who was world footballer of the year in 1996 and was promptly signed by then Southampton manager Graham Souness made 1 appearance and never played again apparently
Hi Alfie, I’m a big fan Can you make a video about Vietnam National Team’s recent success (AFF Championship Winner, Rafaelson as the top scorer, Kim-Sang Sik’s masterpiece) ?
19:26 Man, there are a couple of reasons that I love your channel, but I think that the one that really hits home is that you are one of the very few European commentators that talk about South American football, and not only South American players in Europe. I was really surprised that you included Barbosa on this list, and as a Brazilian I really appreciate it. One aspect that I would further comment on his situation is that, besides his role in the Maracanazzo, a very significant part of the heat that he received from the population later on his life stemmed from the color of his skin. Brazil was the last country in the Americas to abolish slavery, and even though we are far from perfect nowadays, the situation was waaaay worse back when Barbosa was active. Fortunately, Vasco da Gama fans do an amazing job in rehabilitating his image (at the very least to themselves), as they are a club deeply associated with this issue here in Brazil.
Great video, the only thing that should have been mentioned is Karius' concussion, as many other comments already said. If the Liverpool staff would have had that knowledge, purely out of medical reasons he should have been subbed off, cuz your brain is most vulnerable to significant damage right after already recieving a concussion. But it most likely affected his performance negatively as well, and in these situations reacting just a fraction of a second too late, or having some spatial/visual distortion at a bad moment is enough to lose the game. There's official statements by the doctors that examined him that suggest his ability to play might have been compromised.
Not putting both Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho on the list is criminal. Both English footballers were notorious for the infamous penalty miss that not only cost England a chance of winning the Euro 2020 at home soil, but also affected their football careers at all. Rashford's careers with Manchester United after that infamous night at Wembley was a complete mess, with the exception of 2022/23 season where he bagged at least more than 10 goals with the club, while Sancho's great impact seems to be fading away. Even his loan move to Borussia Dortmund didn't help at all, despite making all the way to the Champions League Final the last season.
Not mentioning the concussion that Karius received felt a bit wrong, he got obliterated by Ramos earlier in the match that most likely led to his mistakes, good video otherwise
I’m a United fan and honestly, even I felt a little bit bad for Karius at the end of the game. You just knew it would be a psychological mount Everest to climb
Karius very likely had concussion in that 2018 final. Which made me think, you should do a video on CTE/Dementia in footballers. Was really sad to see the news about Dean Windass
I know Barbosa because the brazillians and brazil had a trauma on black braziliian players, that it affected the early career of Dida, another black brazillian GK. It all stemmed to this game you mentioned.
Sadly massive difference in white and black players on Brasil, white Brazilians like dunga, kaka,Leonardo, zico, riverlino all come from backgrounds while black players always come from poverish. Some teams don't recruit poor players as they have to pay big money for academy's. That why in the 90s and early 2000s lots of players with fake identitys, ereberto who played for chievo probably most famous.
Ginola didn't deserve the criticism from Houllier. One mistake didn't cost France qualification, but it was easier to blame Ginola than himself for a failed campaign.

At least Stepanovs did have a great game v Germany in Euro 2004, but yes, his career falling apart could be pinned to a single match, in contrast to the declines of Squillaci and Mustafi.
My perception of Houllier (that he is an ar$ehole) is forever coloured by that quote about of Ginola. Hanging a young player out to dry to cover his own failings, like Hoddle did to Beckham in 1998. Houllier could’ve done a better job in that campaign so that a single misplaced cross wouldn’t have left France out of the World Cup and Hoddle would probably have won multiple world cups as both a player and manager if he’d simply been a better person in his previous life. Fannies.
Barbosa is a truly heartbreaking story and his treatment in Brazil genuinely abhorrent. He was a very good goalkeeper who made 1 misjudgement and deserved far better from history than he got. I'd also include Peter Bonetti who was an excellent keeper still regularly voted England's worst on the basis of 1 poor game he played in rusty form after a month's lay off in 1970. 🤔
10:08 similar thing happened in 2013 with my club's Sporting CP player Valeri Bojinov. He insisted taking a penalty instead of the usual penalty taker Matias Fernandez, almost breaking up a fight in the field. Penalty missed and Sporting lost 1-0. Needless to say, Bojinov 7 years in 5 clubs before retiring in 2020. Before Sporting, he played for City, Fiorentina and Juventus.
We need to get a what on Earth is going on video on Dortmund (again), we're currently 10th in the Bundesliga and we have 1 win in 8 matches, you can well explain our failed transfer policy and the baffling decisions surrounding our former, current and next manager
Was Boateng's embarrassing drop against Messi in 2015 be such a career-defining moment? I mean, he played for Bayern for many years after that, but I doubt it was ever again talked about as among the best CB in world football as he had been routinely considered up to that moment...
As a Napoli supporter, I have hated few players more than Simone Zaza. First, he was the catalyst for Juventus's 2015/16 Serie A win, where his injury time winner against us cost us the top of the table which we wouldn't see for the rest of the season, and then made an ass of himself at our expense for the whole world to see at the Euros. I wouldn't be lying if I said I enjoyed every single moment of his downfall after that skied penalty, and even if seeing the replays and memes haunted me, I still get tons of schadenfreude out of them. At least Giovanni Simeone fully redeemed himself in my eyes after joining us and becoming a supersub in our 2022/23 Scudetto run. That being said, Ginola and Karius both got done dirtier than a Land Rover going through the Indian jungle.
Would Joey Barton count as an honourable mention? I'm pretty sure his career took an absolute nose dive after his meltdown against Man City, possibly costing both QPR the win and Man united the title.
I don't watch many matches other than my team but I'm glad I got to watch Bale VS Maicon. Possibly some of the best individual performance in history by a player people didn't know
Ramos should have been sent off for the Salah judo move ofc but Karius is to blame for his errors because he took a blow to the head & didn't own up to coming off. he was too proud to come off in a CL final when Liverpool had a decent keeper on the bench. utterly selfish & unprofessional. cost his club the biggest trophy
I don t pity karius at all. After that abhorrent performance in the final where he became the laughing stock of the football world, the guy managed to rebuild his life pretty well. Of course playing for schalke 04 in 2.bundesliga isn t the best prodessional wise, but he recently got married to leotta, so plenty to envy about.
Day 15 Best 7 Norwegian players in premier league excluding Haaland and Ødegaard(too predictable) 🙃 Quite remarkable how one stinker of a match really can ruin a career.

We need to get a what on Earth is going on video on Dortmund (again), we're currently 10th in the Bundesliga and we have 1 win in 8 matches, you can well explain our failed transfer policy and the baffling decisions surrounding our former, current and next manager
Alfie u really should mention that modern day franquista Ramos who rather than Gareth Bale, actually ruined Karius
7 Best supersubs
If Alfie makes one bad video it could all be over for him.
Its crazy that Gareth Bale is responsible (at least partly) for two guys downfall in this list
Would Joey Barton count as an honourable mention? I'm pretty sure his career took an absolute nose dive after his meltdown against Man City, possibly costing both QPR the win and Man united the title.
Hey Alfie please do a video about greatest supersubs in football history
zzzzzz
Didnt Karius take a knock to the head in that game?
Did you ever make a video about players that got their careers saved by a position change? like Gareth Bale or Joelinton
Poppadom hands is quality! 😂
7:28 excellent man management skills there Troy 👍
"Looking like a toddler after a particularly nasty shart" - genius! 😂
There's no way that could be called a run-up, it was a tap dance!
Day 41: 7 best female footballers of all time
We really need a time stamp for the start of the video in the bio
I don't watch many matches other than my team but I'm glad I got to watch Bale VS Maicon. Possibly some of the best individual performance in history by a player people didn't know
I'm a male Brazilian viewer and I look exactly like that. Wow Alfie, where'd you find that picture of me?
7 Best transfer chains (club to club due to ingoings and outgoings)
Alfie why do you say you're on bluesky when you aren't?
putting a like for SAM!
you're awesome SAM
Would the missed penalty by Jadon Sancho in 2021's Euro final be such a career-defining moment? I doubt he's ever been as good since...
This will be good
Ramos should have been sent off for the Salah judo move ofc but Karius is to blame for his errors because he took a blow to the head & didn't own up to coming off. he was too proud to come off in a CL final when Liverpool had a decent keeper on the bench. utterly selfish & unprofessional. cost his club the biggest trophy
At least Karius plays for the greatest club in the world now
Ginola should not be listed here at all
I don t pity karius at all. After that abhorrent performance in the final where he became the laughing stock of the football world, the guy managed to rebuild his life pretty well. Of course playing for schalke 04 in 2.bundesliga isn t the best prodessional wise, but he recently got married to leotta, so plenty to envy about.
I learnt about Barbosa only yesterday while watching a video about Dida 😂
Day 13 of asking for a video of the 7 greatest lower league players of all time.
MILA: man I love Alfie
Neymar got bored and went for the check instead
All but Castillo did not deserve the treatment
I think I speak for all Spurs supporters when I say Woodgate redeemed himself.
Day 15
Best 7 Norwegian players in premier league excluding Haaland and Ødegaard(too predictable) 🙃
Quite remarkable how one stinker of a match really can ruin a career.
