I left a negative comment on this video 2 years ago and have since come to value Fr. Robert Barron's UA-cam channel and Catholicism series. I was upset with institutional corruption within the church and the idea of separating Jesus from religion appealed to me. Fr. Robert Barron has made a huge difference in my life even though I have never met him and the fact that I commented negatively on this video bothered me. To be honest I never made it past the beginning before I got defensive. Fr. Barron thank you for the difference you have made in my life.

      That's awesome. AND THAT'S GRACE.
That is where we become more like Jesus and not be so defensive and argumentative.
I admire teachers like this gentleman, because even though some of his religious practices are not biblical, he by grace is still able to deliver a great response.

What a great thing, to have the humility to make up for a past post. Pretty rare. This was good to read. (Incidentally, you have the same name as Father Vincent Krische, a priest in Lawrence, KS, who is a wonderful and thoughtful person, and a great theological teacher.)

Quite right. He was referring to his mystical body the Church, which is structured apostolically and which will endure until the end of time. Members of the church are indeed called out from the world into a new relationship with Jesus. This is precisely why you can't truly find Christ the Head apart from his mystical body.

"My body is true food and my blood is true drink." "Unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you." Jesus tells the little girl to wake from the sleep of death and she does. He tells Lazarus to come out of his grave, and the dead man comes out. What Jesus says is, precisely because he is the creative Word of God in the flesh. "This is my body," and over the wine, "this is my blood."

Bishop Robert Barron Respectfully, Jesus also said, “ if your eye causes you to sin, pluck it out. If you hand causes you to sin then cut it off. It is better to go to into heaven crippled than to go into hell body whole”. This is all symbolism.

Fr. John When Jesus says “do this in remembrance of me” he’s not saying remembering to take and eat himself. He’s saying it remember him by what the cost of sin was. The death of the Lord. It is symbolism and metaphor. He’s referring that what he was about to do is what we are to remember and partake in. Context.

@@jacobpodolsky2649 Not true. it goes beyond symbolism and metaphor. He is the true Passover Lamb, the perfect sacrifice, and the passover lamb was consumed by the Jews, and we Catholics follow that pattern today. Yes, context. As in, wider context, as in the Jewish roots of the Eucharist, the Passover of Jesus, and the Lamb of Revelation. Scott Hahn and Brant Pitre are correct on this.

Fr. John sir, as a messianic Jew I can tell you the Jews didn’t believe that by consuming the wine that it was actual blood. Especially human blood. It’s symbolic of the Passover for sure. But was the blood consumed or was it placed over the door posts of their houses? Christ’s blood covers the doorposts of our hearts for those who believe. That’s the context.

How do you handle "work out your salvation with fear and trembling."? How do you interpret, "if I have faith enough to move the mountains but have not love, I am nothing"? How do you read the parable in Matthew 25, according to which salvation is a function of love and not faith? As you know, I could go on and on quoting passages of this type.

    • @rhiannonkruger2110
      @rhiannonkruger2110 4 роки тому

Work out your salvation with fear and trembling...we cannot by ourselves achieve salvation on our own. So should we choose this path it is not of God and thus should bring about fear and trembling. Having faith to move mountains without love is because just faith in of itself without the heart of love for Christ above all else is empty. Salvation is an act of love by God and not just based on our faith which makes it one sided as God loved us so much which is why Jesus died for our salvation

    • @rhiannonkruger2110

All of which support the relational piece of God and man together. He loves us so much and those who believe and love him with all our hearts minds and soul have hearts reborn which then the love and fruits flow and through said relationship of love, faith, belief and commitment and God's mercy, forgiveness and grace are we promised and awarded salvation. Because I love him so much I WANT to repent for my sins and my heart is new and the holy spirit has changed my heart and mind.

You can sum up everything wrong in religiosity in Jesus' followers. They flex and mold themselves continually to be an attractive institution, seemingly intelligent and inviting to "most". I could sum Christianity in a statement. There was Jesus, then differences arose.
No one difference subtracted from the effectiveness of God Himself to draw people to him. Jesus established the Church and Man made a business out of it. GOD made sex and Man made a selfish perversion of it. GOD made love and Man a religion out of it. Love was the conquering power over sin and separation. The only thing that remains after love is fear and fear is root of reason that makes every decision you make one rooted in selfish Godless actions. So no amount of religion can make you love God nor make God love you. This wold be another Gospel. There was only one. If we didn't worship the Bible and listened instead to God we might all stand on common ground. The Bible is base of all religious difference . Funny to think that this video is made by a faith group that claims the only road to God. Jesus made it very clear that he was the only intercessor. Jesus told no one to pray to Mary. Jesus told no one that they need kiss the ring of any man. Religion is man most intelligent attempts to build a ladder to God. Pray more read less. Its funny how we have truly limited God's dealings with man to a man written book. If there was no Bible man would still know the name of Jesus in 2021.

Very interesting video! It's very popular with people around my age to use the Catholic Church as a pristine example of why "religion" is bad. One of the best statements that I said back was the following, "The Catholic Church has been around for 2000 years and has had its share of corruption (like shooting fish in a barrel, as you said). But, would you be able to find any other institution, government or nation that is comparable and has not had to deal with corruption? Even the United States in it's 200+ years of existence has plenty of examples of corruption and bad decisions (exile of Native Americans, slavery, etc...). The church is run by humans and it's going to make mistakes, but the church has done more good in this world in Jesus' name than many care to give credit for. God bless!

I've often had the same thought. Here in eastern Canada the Roman Catholic Church has been taking care of its followers for hundreds of years now. All of the Hospitals and and school's were built and run by them/us. They took care of our sick and elderly and orphans. Most of the best Universities started as religious institutions. It's like most people have forgotten that or choose not to remember, because it's easy to hate and love takes work and a bit of effort to maintain. I thank God for our church, I'm a proud Catholic.

@@dhebert111 Good afternoon all. Im not going to bash or talk down to anyone's free will in choosing to be in a religion or not. Thats between you and our Heavenly Father. I will just speak the truth. What is truth? Truth is what God Almighty says on the matter period! Robert Barron quoted Jesus when HE said" I come not to abolish the Law but to fulfill it." Does Robert even know what the Law is? Do yall? Its is the Word of God, the Torah, the first 5 books of the O.T. Robert Barron wants yall to see the Law as a religion and that Jesus fulfilled it. Well Robert Barron Jesus did fulfill it indeed but not the way your heart has been taught. You see yall, The Holy Spirit is the only way one can have true understanding of Gods Word period! Jesus told the Pharisees( the higher ups of the religion ie PRIESTS) that they couldn't understand who was in front of them or who was speaking to them because they didn't know THE FATHER. They didn't have a relationship , they had religion. They took our Old Testament and added fences, rules and regulations to make a perfect thing meant to just show us our sin, to show us how wicked we all really are and how Israel, all of Israel ( Thats all of us by the way, then and now) always needed a savior( All the heroes of the O.T) to remind them, show them and free them. Thats when God wrapped Himself in humanity came as a man and showed us and taught us what the Law was intended for. Not a list or lists of rules to become righteous. But to humble ourselves for who we really are, wicked sinners that deserve nothing but only because of this LOVE that most cannot even fathom, we get a free gift. The Gift of Grace though Faith in Christ Jesus. This Love brings us down to our knees in full surrender to Christ Jesus and Him alone. No church, no religion, no priest! He is our High Priest!! Amen Lord Jesus. This brings us to repentance( Not what you think it is Robert) repentance is a decision from your heart to turn from your old sinful way, not because your suppose to do this as a Christian, no! because you want to, you desire to be obedient because of the love you have for Christ Jesus and when we fail, because we will, we run to Jesus and confess( we speak to what Jesus says about us and who we are in Him) that sin directly to the Father in Heaven not a human here. And then Robert Barron, the Law becomes etched on our hearts and we know the true meaning of Gods Word. Amen Lord Jesus! Robert Barron and all, please do what Christ Jesus commands us to do. Read your Bibles. Dont let what religion has mislead you for probably your whole lives direct you. Let the Spirit of Truth Jesus Christ direct you. By the way, read a Bible that hasn't been altered like the Catholic version. Dont get me started on that subject, I might lose my religion, no pun intended or yes?? Lol. May our Lord Jesus be with you all during this time. Ask Him to guide you to the truth for He is The Truth. Amen By the way...I was born and raised catholic till i was 18yrs old. Jesus called me from the dead when i was in my mid 30's, i wondered away for some years but because of His love and Mercy Im 45yrs old and have been walking with Him for almost 3 yrs AMEN!

True, more conservative Lutherans believe in companation or impanation, which is to say, that Jesus becomes really present along with the bread and wine; whereas Catholic believe in transsubstantiation, which is to say, the real transformation of bread and wine into the body and blood of Jesus. Luther was adamantly opposed to transsubstantiation. And Luther didn't think that the sacraments cause grace; they are only signs accompanying the word of promise.

I think what Jeff was actually talking about is the fact that we need an intimate personal relationship with God first and foremost. The 'religion' he is talking about is the idea that as long as you do this that and the other you will be saved rather than it being a question of your heart. It's important that we don't live in fear of God, just begrudgingly following his commandments out of fear, but rather have genuine love for him which inspires us to follow his teaching and heed his word. If you treat God as just some rules to follow or some rituals to do you miss the point of living in intimacy with him. I know my sin is paid for by Jesus on the cross by the scandal of grace and that means I am no longer separated from him. Now the holy spirit can live within me and transform me to become more christlike, as opposed to just me trying to be a good person in my own strength just so I won't go to hell. I love Jesus and I love being part of his body on earth right now, the Church, but that body needs to be focused on the head, Jesus, not the theatrics of rituals and thinking that gets you to heaven without engaging with God on a personal level. I'm not ranting against all sacrament, when it is said as a declaration of God's people, but when it's said monotonously by people who don't realise the joy that is found in what they are saying, there is a problem. The same is true in modern churches that focus too much on having fancy lights and apple products instead of the real reason we're here. As long as we follow rules in response to knowing Jesus, and not just out of fear caused by man, then there is no problem with the Church.

SmokeySmudgeStudio Hey! I've just read your comment and I too understand exactly what you're saying. It's like praying, when we say the Lords Prayer, are we just repeating the words as a monotonous ritual? Or are we understanding those words and repeating them with meaning from our hearts. To my mind, when Jesus graciously imparted the Lords Prayer to us, he was perhaps showing us how to pray. Now forgive me if I'm wrong, I just feel that God would rather hear our personal inner thoughts and feelings towards H.I.M. And thus in hearing our supplications, our joy's and our torments which are formed from our *Beliefs & Praising of H.I.M,* that we as his children have the personal and the Divine connection with our Father. In essence there is a fundamental difference of repeating the traditions of 'Old' and Honouring Our Father from our hearts. However, I also agree with Bishop Barrons thoughts of Jesus without Religion, Jesus didn't come to Change or Banish the Old Testament but rather came to Fulfil it. The Son of God was apposed to man's deception and blasphemous ways that were being carried out within the Churches under the pretence of worshiping God. *As it is written Matthew 6:5* 'And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites. For they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by men. Truly I tell you, they already have their reward. But when you pray, go into your inner room, shut your door, and pray to your Father, who is unseen. And your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.

The religious order in those days came from their commentaries of the law, essentially, man-made dictates that were not only cruel, serving the elite, but also kept a large portion of people away from YHWH.
This is why Yeshua said they were driving a wedge between people and YHWY, and were blind guides.
He taught the law, summing it up in those three short commands.

Hey brother/sister, I am a Roman Catholic (born and raised) and am in absolute and irrevocable love with Christ! Just like any healthy relationship, I have found Christ's teachings through the Church to be a guide for how to live my life in accordance to His will. The teachings of the Church that I follow allow me to maximize the man of God that I need to be and to increase identity with Him; in short, He increases as I decrease (John 3:30) by living in His commandments and example (the Church). Hope this helps!

This video presents a good argument here. An even simpler one is that - if the definition of religion is "a set of beliefs concerning the cause, nature, and purpose of the universe" - how would it be possible to pursue any form of spirituality without it? It would be a contradiction. For as soon as we begin meditating, reflecting, or worshiping there is direction and perceived understanding (belief). In other words, religion.

Fr. Robert Barron Just in case you were curious the name of the spoken word artist in this video is Jefferson Bethke. And in subsequent videos he has done he clarifies that he did not mean to jettison the entire Christian tradition. In fact even though he is an Evangelical Christian he is quite ecumenical in his views of other Christian traditions like Catholicism, Eastern Orthodoxy, etc and on numerous occasions he speaks about the importance of the body of Christ. He also speaks out against a individualistic, and reductionist view of salvation and religious life which is prevalent in some forms of evangelical Christianity. And he has a youtube channel. I think you should check him out a little more, because I think his views on this subject were misinterpreted.

Fact check is that bethke himself could have removed the original post if he felt it was not accurate of his position; he enjoyed the popularity. It's called Spoken Word Poetry. To me, the poem was not bashing christianty in the context of a relationship with Jesus Christ but rather bashing the empty laws that people tend to idolize, which corrupted religion in Jesus' time on Earth AND now. A lot of people hold fullfilling the 'rules' of christianity higher than having an actual relationship with Christ. This in my mind creates a gulf between them and God that until they can step away from laws, rules, protocols, sacred objects/people and make christianity a walk with God in and through your life, guided by the Bible, will never be crossed. Dare i say that the Bible IS sacred and true, but also a history textbook and life manual. I think it is possible to idolize the Bible.

I see his video in an entirely different way. I was an atheist for the first 40 years of my life. Then, God reached out to me when I needed God the most. I later looked back over my life and realized that God had been acting in my life all along. After I realized that it was God in my life and that I hadn't simply lost my mind, I began reading about all of the world religions to see which actually represented God correctly. Finally, I came to Christianity. I tried many churches but found that none explained Jesus the way I know Him which is perfectly written in the four Gospels. That is Jesus as He taught and commanded. It is that simple. Anything beyond that takes away from Jesus.
You can theorize about all of the possible motivations that this young man might have but I see that he is saying to simply know Jesus and not follow human rules, Mark 7:6-8. I know that you will defend your church but all denominations are a schism in the true church which is the body of Christ, all true believers in and followers of Jesus.
It is sad to see a man who represents God to many people who can't understand this very simple thing. I'm not an evangelical. I adhere to no denomination. I am simply Christian as all Christians should be, a follower of Jesus Christ.
BTW Paul got some things wrong. Acts 15:19-21 The food prohibitions which Paul agreed to went completely against the spirituality that Jesus taught, Matthew 15:17-20, and Matthew 15:11, Matthew 5:38-40, John 7:22 (Jesus was referring to circumcision of the heart), Matthew 5:43-44, Mark 7:14-16, Mark 12:33. But, then again, Jesus was God and Paul wasn't. Paul did get it right in Romans 8.
Please study the four Gospels to see what Jesus actually taught. Obeying the teachings of Jesus is the only way to God, John 14:23-24.

      James 2:14-19
14 What good is it, my brothers and sisters, if someone claims to have faith but has no deeds? Can such faith save them? 15 Suppose a brother or a sister is without clothes and daily food. 16 If one of you says to them, “Go in peace; keep warm and well fed,” but does nothing about their physical needs, what good is it? 17 In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead.
18 But someone will say, “You have faith; I have deeds.”
Show me your faith without deeds, and I will show you my faith by my deeds. 19 You believe that there is one God. Good! Even the demons believe that-and shudder.
In reality, Jesus told us to do deeds--love our neighbors as ourselves, help the poor, the widows, the orphans, obey the teachings of Jesus. That is what the real problem is, People are either followers of Jesus or not. John 14:23-24

@@dinyhotmail True faith is always faith and do. You are right that faith without deeds, (I would rather call that religion), is no faith. Faith is following the narrow and difficult way, carrying the Cross, and help the hungry, the sick, the widows, the inmates, the outcasts, the addicted, even if you don't like them. The Salvation Army has understood that very well.

But you need to grasp the meaning of Galatians 5:6 ("The only thing that counts is faith expressing itself through love). Paul nowhere says that we are justified by faith alone. Luther played with the texts for his own purposes. What Paul actually said is the ground for the Catholic conviction that salvation is a function of faith, yes indeed, but a faith that gives rise to love. This is perfectly congruent with the 1 Corinthians quote I cited earlier.

Love/works are a BYproduct of being saved as the Holy Spirit intices you to live/love better. It is NOT necessary for salvation.

I am facing a very tough moment. I've walked into my church and asked for help. I was directed to call institutions outside the church for the help I needed. I explained that I am depressed and distressed and that I needed guidance. I opened up to my religious leader. I literally begged for help. I was told that the help I was asking for was not the type of help the church gives. I wasn't asking for anything illegal. I wasn't asking for anything unethical. As a matter of fact, I was not asking for anything I myself hadn't given to others in their time of need. Yes, I was asking of the "Holy Church" of my Lord Jesus Christ, the Catholic Church, to which I had given my entire youth and all my adult years up to that day when I approached my priest, I was asking of that great institution for a lot less than I, a single individual with 7 children to support, had already given to my brothers and sisters in the church and outside the church. Instead of getting help or even a comforting feeling, I walked out of that church feeling abandoned and forgotten. I walked out of that church feeling worthless. I was alone. I was even more depressed. I was certainly a lot more distressed. That pivotal moment revealed the real face of religion. After going home and crying about my feelings, I decided I didn't want to blame the entire Catholic Church for this. So I went to the diocese for help. The feeling there was even worse. You see, I was told to go back to my church and ask for help locally. When I explained that my priest had turned me away, they simply replied they could not help me. Would you care to speak privately about what it is I needed help with? We should definitely speak.

I've never attended the Catholic church on a long term basis. But since relocating to Europe I've tried attending a few times. While it doesn't appeal to me as the Southern Baptist church that I attended for 3 years before leaving America, I can say that like any other church. The importance of fellowship is important and emphasized in both churches that I attended.
I also have attended the Mormon church in my town and this is the only church that I have seen where the majority of its members actually live by the same rules of the church outside of it. The fellowship is by far the strongest I have ever seen in terms of living by the word while at church and outside of the church during the other 6 days of life.
My only issue is that the Mormon church abides by a second book that I have had constant problems with because I want to focus solely on the New Testament. I have stated my beliefs to the church, yet I am still welcome to attend.
The reason why I agree with the video that you are challenging. Is simply because what he is stating is exactly how I have developed to feel about faith and religion as well. And that was well before I saw his video.
At this point and time in my life, the Catholic is more about its imagery and appearance than the word itself. Self anointment through belief that the very decision is backed by a divine blessing is no different to me than the many leaders throughout the Middle East that claim the right to rule their countries based upon claiming that they are descendants of the Prophet Mohamed.
Too many power moves have been made in the name of the Catholic church. Contradicting the words of Christ through their many choices made on behalf of the Catholic church. It reminds me of the modern day Pharisees. But as I have learned in life, every single person on this planet is unique and no two people are exactly the same. Therefore, I cannot judge the church or its members through a black and white spectrum, or a blanket policy approach.
I just pray that each and every person comes to the conclusion that Christ and His sacrifice. Along with our appreciation and acknowledgement of His sacrifice is the ultimate fact of our faith.

The man did more than you think. At first it may not seem so, but things are not always on a surface level. By repenting on the cross during his last moments, one could see where his heart is. The same goes for the other thief who refused to repent. There was very little spirituality in that thief, since he clearly still thought in a worldly sense, as in saving the flesh.
Basically, I wouldn't say that the thief who repented "did nothing but admit his sin", since he openly repented in front of a crowd, which is an act in and of itself. So by realizing your wrongdoings, truthfully regretting your sins and ultimately repenting, you're not doing nothing, you're actually doing something, especially if it's in front of other people.
I'm fairly sure that the people who were there and heard him and saw him turn to Christ were influenced in one way or another by this very *action*. Now _that_ was his sort of 'mini ministry', so to speak.
And so, I would safely consider the outward expression of repentance as something, and not nothing. In the end, we shouldn't forget: the one goes with the other; faith + works.

It may seem as if he had 'stolen the heaven' , but he actually died a martyr, because he repented, admitted in front of everybody that Jesus is the king (that is, he testified), he also defended Jesus when the other criminal was provoking him ( That is, he warned a sinner) and in the end died. His sins were washed by his martyr blood, that's why he went straight to heaven.

By nature of faith there is a choice, a decision (I.e. a work) involved. That’s what baffles me about Protestants even when I was one, the idea that “there’s nothing you can do to save yourself so accept Christ” to me is a contradiction. We’re saved through the graces freely given, unearned by us, which is a point we agree on. However, we must accept those graces which are provided by the sacraments. I would argue he received his “last rights” in the most perfect way, physically from Christ Himself, as he confessed his sins and was given absolution.

The greatest misconception that Catholics have about Protestants, is that because we don't bow to the authority of the Pope and the order of the church, we somehow despise church and authority in general. As a Protestant I can tell you that is very far from the truth. Part of being any Christian is to surrender and the authority that you believe God has put into place. This is why I serve my local church, as difficult as it may be at times. Luther's disagreements with the Catholic Church stemmed from a very real distortion by priestly authority upon its people.
I will say though that stupid viral videos like the "I Love Jesus, but Hate Religion" only add more misconceptions that Protestants only care about their personal relationship with God and not strengthening the Body of Christ

    • @slnoll21
      @slnoll21 8 років тому +2

While I have no doubt there is some degree of truth taught at your local church, and that your experiences serving your church have been fruitful, the problem is that Jesus desired all to be one, and not only that, Jesus founded ONE church. We can come to this conclusion both scripturally and logically. Ephesians 4:5 "one Lord, one faith, one baptism". Matthew 16:18 "you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my Church". Logically, the Church is Christ's bride, and Christ's can only have one bride! 1 Corinthians 18:17 says "if he refuses to listen to them, tell the church. If he refuses to even listen to the church, treat him as you would a gentile or tax collector." (Read the whole chapter for context). From this, we know that the Church is the ultimate authority. The church can't be the ultimate authority if each church you go to has contradictory teaching! There is only one church whose pillars are One Holy Catholic and Apostolic, and she welcomes anyone and everyone.

    • @fluffynoses
      @fluffynoses 8 років тому

Scott do you doubt the ability of Jesus's Church to be solely confined to one earthly body? Even the early churches of Christians were scattered all over the Roman Empire, united only in their faith but splintered by cultural differences. I believe in the Universal Church, which is the ultimate authority, but it is also comprised of local churches

    • @slnoll21
      @slnoll21 8 років тому +2

+fluffynoses no, I don't doubt it at all. God knows we are physical creatures, therefore he understands our need for physical community. You can say that there were many Christian communities, but it is a historical fact that there is an unbroken line from pope Francis to St. Peter, whom Jesus himself gave the keys to the kingdom of heaven. And the church can't be split into many denominations, because like I said before, their teachings blatantly contradict each other. If you decide down the road that you don't like what your local church is teaching, you can just go to another church a block over and they will teach something different. Do you really think that was Christ's vision? Protestants treat hierarchy like it is the second h-word, when in reality, all it means is "sacred order". The Church's hierarchy was the only was that the Church's teaching could initially be spread from Region to region, and it was from that one church that Martin Luther originally came from.

What is a good faith if it isn't supported by acts of charity? Fr. Barron was right to highlight Jesus' problem with the Pharisees from Christ's time.
Today's reading mentioned a Jesus condemning the praise sought out by the matters of the faith and it spoke of how the Pharisees tired burdens, crates, onto the backs of common folk who looked to them for guidance. "Do as they say," Jesus says, I paraphrase, "but don't do as they do."
Jesus, yes, entourages us to work for him to spread his message but he tired the biggest create onto his back, sort of speak. He wants us to tie crates onto our own backs so that we may serve others as he did.
The best example pairing this two-truths-to salvation "formula" if we want to call it, can be seen where the son invites us to PICK UP our cross and FOLLOW Him.
Thank you for the video Fr. Baron. It was actually recommended to me by none other than a Catholic priest who told me he enjoyed it. Maybe it humored him or maybe he just saw it from one angle that you mentioned. Perhaps he too took it as saying "go against this hypocrisy of unsupported faith" because the faithful Christian knows that acts of love are obligatory.

Forgive me, it's not my place at all. But is asking Jesus to have a relationship with him not simple? It may be hard to be a Christian, but it is simple. Love God, love his people, and believe his word. Live in a way that reflects this. Loving God has changed my heart and I naturally want to follow him. Does everything have to be made complicated by "smarter" men with titles and degrees? It's like "Only a few of you can be a Christian because you know the rules and you don't make too bad of mistakes so your sins are easier to forgive". "The rest of you the go back to the holes you crawled out of, you're making us look bad". Reminds me of the religious leaders that put Jesus to death because he didn't fit with the institution they had created. I'm not a very smart person, and I'm very young, but I love God so much and I'm surrounded by people in my generation who're changed by him everyday and it's not always happening in church buildings! It's happening on the streets and among the broken, in the middle of a song, in places we'd least expect. I'm rarely touched in my church building by my preacher in his robes with his fancy bible and seminary experience. I respect him and I know he loves The Lord. But I guess when people gathered to hear Jesus speak, the church was at it's most authentic. Now "the church" is a place people feel uncomfortable and unwelcome. We seem to forget we take the church with us wherever we go.

Jordyn Connell while no one should disagree with the point that faith starts with an encounter with Jesus, we cannot say that Love doesn't have rules and principles we must live by. Jesus is the truth; in His word, we are told that Jesus was founding a church. This church we are told by the disciple of St. John the Apostle (ignatius of antioch in 105 ad) is called the Catholic church. Now you are right, we ought to be in relationship with Christ - we meet him in the Sacraments of the catholic church, where He himself comes to us.

and honor me with their lips,
while their hearts are far from me,
      and their worship of me is a human commandment learned by rote;
14 so I will again do
      amazing things with this people,
      shocking and amazing.
The wisdom of their wise shall perish,
and the discernment of the discerning shall be hidden.
You also might like a guy I listen to named Dan Mohler. It's some serious gospel. Jesus died so that our flesh would be crucified on that cross, so that God could get in us and in the church. It's always been both. But the gospel is always about transformation.

Having made this comment 2 years ago I don't necessarily still agree with every little word I wrote. However like I said in 2015, "we seem to forget we take the church with us wherever we go". I actually saved this back in 2012 but never watched it until today and I'm really glad that I never did until today. You see, when you are a young Christian/Catholic, I find in our culture we have this need to be standouts within and among our peers. What i mean by that is we need to be the most "on-fire" Christian we can be without necessarily fact checking ourselves. It's a need to out-due each other. This breeds competitiveness and clicks among each other and it's something that i feel needs to be guided right away and taught against. Bishop Barron, you couldn't have said it better than you did. Jesus didn't abolish religion when he came, he abolished corruption and greediness. Yes he said he would tear down the temple, but in three days, he rebuilt it anew and ever better than it would have ever become. I'm so sad that politics are starting to make their way in the church. This, "You believe this so go sit over there" and "You aren't the right demographic so go sit over there to be used at a different time" is destroying churches and making them a status symbol or a latest trend. . These "False Prophets" are going to be the downfall of man. So in closing, I really pitty this young man who is clearly on fire for God but is very miss guided and miss taught. He needs to be taught differently. And with time, maturity, and knowledge about God and our Bible, he might actually be a good tool for Jesus to help people. Anyways, good video and God Bless!

You've made a couple videos I disagree with, Father Barron, but this one is spot on. The incarnation, the duality of divinity and humanity, is so crucial to showing HOW and WHY God saved us through His Son, Jesus. Jesus was more than a concept; he was a man, and he instituted a Church on a rock, not a cloud of ether. It's the one part of the Catholic Church that is lacking everywhere and why I'm in RCIA.

TAKE NOTICE: Barron does NOT read the bible correctly. MAtthew 25 talks about the jews during the tribulation. NOT about christians right now. You can read this if you include previous chapters like Matthew 24.
REbuilding the temple in 3 days? This is NOT about a building. Who stood up 3 days after being crucified? Yes, this temple is his own body. It is Jesus Christ!
Ofcourse Jesus wanted to fullfill the law to perfection. Why? Because we CAN NOT. It was his duty to live a perfect live and have a perfect death to save mankind and defeat the satan.
Not because he liked 'religion' and institutes that much. Come on man...
The 2000 year mainstream tradition of the catholic church stands against him? So what?
If you do research how the catholic church started out, we learn that this is a roman/pagan blend which morphed into a behemoth full of anti-biblical things. Using this as a point of arguement says something.
Please; READ you bible diligently and do more bible study than a short video like this.
Listen to pastors like JD Farag, Gene Kim, Charles Stanley, etc.
They know how to divide the bible rightly and not lead you astray.
And do some research into the beginnings of roman catholicism.
      You will be shocked.

As a practicing Lutheran I having been taught and believe what you are stating here. I feel the Lutheran church has grown and matured over the last 60 plus years. We do communion every Sunday. When I was growing up it was every other Sunday. We still baptize infants. We are communing our children at a younger age. The Bible is , solo scriptura ,the word of God. But you are right, our freedoms are important to us Lutherans. The LCMS has published a account of the church fathers. I have read prayers they have written and wondered where have you been? This was not even talked about when I was younger. You have to agree that Luther was someone who saw the wealth of the church and and teachings at that time needed to be challenged . I feel that the reformation was bond to happen with or without Luther. He found great joy in what he found in his study of the Bible. A grace and forgiveness he needed personally. I have used my Lutheran up bringing as a bases to continue my growth in Faith and love in Christ our Savior. And feel I have more in command with the Catholic church then not. As a Orthodox priest told me once, "the problem with Lutherans is we only see the resurrection then the reformation. A lot happened in between". In Christ Becky

Yeah...it's more complicated than that. I think they must be evangelical based. They also seem to have adopted the Anabaptist teachings of once saved, always saved.
Generally most Protestant denominations have the: Faith alone saves, but true faith produces good works which demonstrate your faith. Ie. Saying you have faith but doing bad things indicates the faith is false. Same with doing good works just to get to Heaven also being false.
I'm not sure what the Catholic stance is on this. I've know a lot of Catholics who believe in works alone but this seems to be not the case in Catholic theology. Either way, I think what the Bishop is saying is that we need Christian instruction to guide us on our paths in life as followers.

Luther might have reverenced two of the seven sacraments, but he didn't see them as efficacious, as causing grace, but only as external signs of interior conviction. Big Churches & Temples are to attract people and inspire them for good works & charity. And there have been indeed a lot of good and charity works done by the direct or indirect support & inspiration by Religions & Churches - but it is poorly advertised today; when I see mainstream media - if I see a word "Religion" or "Catholic" - it 99% something scadalous, something bad - something to attract people negatively and make laugh about religion - such is the atheistic world today..... And there are other Heroes - I could never understand - why LeBron James has an NBA contract of 400+ millions alone, while we have half a world of poor & hungry people.... but you will always find about the richest and they are set as examples..... well, I was born & raised in Soviet Union, with Communist ideals and capitalist world is very different.... But - I think it is not the Church who should feed the world, but the devoties, inspired by church.... Human alone is very week, Community, people together - can do much more, that's why atheists are trying to separate people and organizations, and later they will win the faithful one by one.... Today - those are not Christians - going in the streets and showing off - but those are Homosexuals taking streets and teaching what others should follow.

Personal study suggestion for interested parties:
Biblical study: Visit the online, searchable Bible software of choice and discover:
    1) How many times the English word "religion" is used in the Old Testament
    2) Note the character of the prevailing metaphors used to describe the nation of Israel's relationship to God in the Old Testament
3a) How many INSTANCES (not times used, but groupings of the word) the English word "religion/religious" is used to translate any Greek word in the New Testament
3b) Of those instances, how many use "religion" in a positive light?
3c) Of those used in a positive light, how many express anything that could be solely deemed "religious" (i.e. couldn't be done by a non-religious entity)
    4) Note the prevailing metaphors used to describe the Christian community in the New Testament
    5) Read 1 John 1 and answer the question: what is the stated purpose of John sharing his message?
    6) In the Apocrypha and other 2nd Temple books, analyze the use of "religion"
    7) Account for the nature of "covenant" as a general concept and the nature of the specifically Hebrew covenants made by Yahweh (Genesis 12:1-3, Genesis 15, Exodus 20-24, Jeremiah 31:31-34 (cf. Hebrews 8:8-11) and consider if this is the thought most people have when they consider "religion" generally.
    For extra-Biblical study:
1a) Without first consulting any other source, write down a concise definition of "religion" (1 to 2 sentences)
1b ) Ask a dozen or so people to give you their definition of the word and write them down without comment. If possible,
    2) Briefly survey academic texts and popular books on religion (library or online-Amazon previews generally include book Introductions which will often contain the author's definition) and compare the definitions you find. Look for at least 6 different sources. Is there a consensus?
    3) Read Peter Harrison's book, "Religion" and "the religions" in the English Enlightenment" for an historical overview of the use of this word. The biography of Harrison's book is another excellent source of study.
    4) Compare "religious" language in Magna Carta with that in the U.S. Declaration of Independence and the Constitution. Noting the dates for the writing of the documents, how are these documents different?
    5) What historic evidence is available to indicate that modern definitions of "religion" are universal to all humans throughout recorded history?
    6) Visit Google Books Ngram viewer. This allows you to view word frequency in all available texts from 1500 to the present. In the search field, type in variations of the word "religion" (e.g. Religion, religions, religious, religiously) and search the years from 1500 to the present, first in English, then in French, German, and Italian. Compare and note the trends you see. Do the same for Russian, Spanish, and just for fun, Chinese. What pattern emerges? Note the date of invention of the printing press and that of the first English printed material (William Caxton's The Recuyell of the Historyes of Troye, 1473)
    For inter-cultural study:
    1) Investigate the use of the word and concept of "religion" in Hindu thought, Sikh thought, Islam, etc. If possible speak with actual Hindus, Sikhs, etc.
    2) Listen/look for "exceptionality" statements like "x is not like other Religions because of y". Keep track of these. They will start to stack up
    3) Take note of the "direction" religious terminology is employed: is it generally self-referential or is it generally "other" referential?
    4) In your media consumption, begin to make note of how many non-religious groups/things/activities are described either tacitly or implicitly with religious metaphors and terminology. Also, keep a log of various usages of religious terminology and attribution by media figures. How do they seem to be defining the term? Do you agree with their usages, characterizations and definitions?
    5) Consider the growing distinction between "religion" and "spirituality". What explain this distinctions and how do you define the two terms differently?
    6) Consider the distinction between "religious people" and "non-religious people". Is "religion" a universal category or not? If it is, how can people "opt out" of it? If it's not, can religion make any universal claims? If so, what are they and on what basis? Should we insist that non or anti-religious people are actually religious?
    7) If you live in the United States, do you think secular humanism is a religion? If so, in what sense? If not, why does the U.S. Supreme Court disagree?
Finalize your study by answering the following:
What conclusions do you reach about:
    1) the reality of "religion" as a universal, essential human category
    2) The utility of the term
    3) the centrality of the concept of religion to Hebrews and early Christians in light of the entire Biblical corpus?
    4) the accuracy of your personal understanding or definition of religion?

It still is amazing that Catholics and other religions cannot admit the fact that they (we) have simply failed and fallen short of bringing people closer too GOD!....As a graduate from a well know Baptist seminary I also fell into this trap. Listening to the religious piety in this video it is no wonder why this video has so few views in its 5 years on line and as I write this the video that is mentioned has over 38 million at date. Has pride become so prevalent in the church that we cannot see we are literally pushing people from the arms of Jesus while we sit in white collars and tell them why we are right. (only for those with ears to hear)

We love because He first loved us. He loved us through the cross by saving us by grace through faith (Ephesians 2:8-9). We are only able to truly love when we first receive His love and forgiveness.
"You foolish Galatians, who has bewitched you, before whose eyes Jesus Christ was publicly portrayed as crucified? This is the only thing I want to find out from you: did you receive the Spirit by the works of the Law, or by hearing with faith? Even so Abraham believed God , and it was reckoned to him as righteousness ."
    Galatians 3:1‭-‬2‭, ‬6 NASB
"Do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption."
    Ephesians 4:30 NASB
We receive the Spirit as a seal to salvation through faith, not works. What James was talking about is that true faith will always bear fruit and cause us to do good works. Good works is the fruit of salvation, not the means.

Thank you for posting this video, it was informative to watch. I think it's difficult for passionate young people in the Church because the mechanics of Church leadership are somewhat slow. The Church is often managed by the older generation who are naturally more conservative than younger people.
The poem he recites talks quite a lot about sexual urges and other perceived hypocritical behaviours outside of Church. This is quite a common subject in evangelism at present. In this way, I am sympathetic to the subject of the poem the young man recites. The thing that bugs me is when people try to portray themselves as not being religious when they profess and practice a formal religious doctrine. It's quite common for Buddhists to say that 'it's a way of life' instead of recognising it's a formal religious practice.
I think that while it feels liberating to reject religion but embrace faith (Jesus), anyone who has faith will need to come to terms with the fact that they will be a part of an organisational structure, which will often misrepresent their own core values. I think it's how you decide to respond to this structure which is important, not so much how the organisational structure defines itself.
I also have a suspicion that the poem is a response to the inclination for lots of people to embrace more esoteric or 'new age' ideas. The purpose of such is to attract more young people into the Church.

Christ created the Church (St. Matt. 16:18), and the Bible calls the Church the Pillar and Foundation of the Truth (1 Tim. 3:15), against which Christ promised the gates of hell would not prevail (St. Matt. 16:18 again). Who is not for Christ is against Him (St. Matt. 12:30), and who is against Christ is against the Truth, since Christ is the Truth (St. John 14:6); therefore, the Church cannot loose the Faith.
As for the historical authenticity of the Holy Catholic Church, you need only read the writings of the early Saints. Adversus Haereses Book III, Chapter 3, Paragraph 2 is a good place to start.
By the way, "Lucifer" is Latin for "light-bringing". In addition to being applied to Satan (I beg to point out both before as well as after the fall), it is also applied to the moon and the morning star (guess Who is called the Morning Star?).
If you have any substantive argument against the Church, I am more than happy to discuss it with you; but thus far, you have not provided any such evidence.

Yes, look at history: For the first 280 years of Christian history, Christianity was banned by the Roman Empire, and Christians were terribly persecuted. The ban was lifted by Emperor Constantine in the "Edict of Milan" in AD 313 upon his "conversion". It should be noted that Constantine refused to fully embrace Christianity (aka: the practice of following Jesus Christ alone) and continued many of his pagan beliefs and practices. Constantine found that, with the Roman Empire being so vast, expansive, and diverse, not everyone would agree to forsake his or her religious beliefs to embrace Christianity. So, Constantine allowed, and even promoted, the “Christianization” of pagan beliefs. Completely pagan and utterly unbiblical beliefs were given new “Christian” identities. Their are many examples of RCC's departure from scripture, one of which is the supremacy of the Roman bishop (the papacy). This was created with the support of the Roman emperors. The origin of the Catholic Church is the tragic compromise of Christianity with the pagan religions that surrounded it. Instead of proclaiming the gospel and converting the pagans, the Catholic Church “Christianized” the pagan religions, and “paganized” Christianity. In short, I disagree with the RCC that I must go to a priest or take of sacraments to be saved. In John 14:6, Jesus said, "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the father except through me." We don't need Joseph Smith, a priest, or anyone else. Paul, the father of Christianity in Christ Jesus, said to the Romans in Romans 5:1-2, "Therefore, having been justified by faith [faith alone], we have peace with God through Jesus Christ [Christ alone]. Through him we have also obtained access by faith into this grace [grace alone] in which we stand, and we rejoice in hope of the glory of God [the glory of God alone]."

    • @joshuagreene6414
      @joshuagreene6414 8 років тому +6

Adelia Kimsey What Christians mean when we say we "pray to the Virgin Mary" is, we are asking her to intercede for us to Christ in the same way we ask a friend to pray for us for certain graces. However, the difference between our friends who are alive and ones who are already in heaven is, the ones who are in heaven have a unique perspective over our lives. Mary especially has a unique perspective because she is our spiritual Mother, who loved Jesus from the diaper to the Cross, who has tender, motherly affection, and who is so strong-willed as to say "YES" to the angel Gabriel's request that she give birth to Immanuel and ultimately bore the sight of his Passion. But how is she OUR spiritual Mother? When the Word became flesh, "He" became both fully human, and fully divine (John 1:1-5;1:14). The Word, who is divine, literally enters into HUMANITY and becomes Jesus: fully divine AND fully human. However, it is the WAY in which the Word becomes flesh and dwells among us that connects us to our Blessed Mother. Jesus did not just miraculously appear on Earth, nor did He simply enter into the womb as a baby. Rather, Mary CONCEIVES of the Holy Spirit and gives birth to Jesus in the same way that we are conceived of by a Mother and a Father and born from our Mother's womb (Matthew 1:18-25). Consider this: If Jesus is God-enter-humanity (incarnate), and we are also created in the image and likeness of God, and not only that, but we share in Jesus' death and Resurrection when WE die and hopefully go to heaven, are we not also SO intrinsically linked to Jesus that we are wonderfully and spiritually born of the same Mother? It's no wonder that some of Jesus' last words on the cross make this point evident... "When Jesus saw His Mother, and the disciple whom He loved standing nearby, He said to His mother, "Woman, behold, your son!" Then He said to the disciple, "Behold, your mother!" From that hour the disciple took her into his own household" (John 19:26-27). We are all the beloved disciple in this story and there is no shame in taking our Blessed Mother into our own household. She received US as son's and daughters when she said YES to being the Mother of God.

Joshua Greene Here's what the Word of God says, " And the Holy Spirit helps us in our weakness. For example, we don’t know what God wants us to pray for. But the Holy Spirit prays for us with groanings that cannot be expressed in words. 27 And the Father who knows all hearts knows what the Spirit is saying, for the Spirit pleads for us believers[a] in harmony with God’s own will.
      Romans 8:26-27
The Holy Spirit is the only mention of intercession for us.

    • @joshuagreene6414
      @joshuagreene6414 8 років тому +3

+Adelia Kimsey The Holy Spirit is indeed the advocate and intercessor but we are prompted to be actively involved in the Spirit's mission by means of our own heartfelt intentions toward others however imperfect. Moses, in this sense pleads to God to have mercy on the Israelites for having worshipped the golden calf while he was on the mount. Moses is praying a prayer of intercession on their behalf. God listens, and his anger abates. Ask and you shall receive if it is in accord with God's will. Intercession is a well-ordered asking.

    • @joshuagreene6414
      @joshuagreene6414 8 років тому +2

Adelia, we are definitely somewhat on the same page. Part of being a Royal Priesthood, you and I, is to pray for and make sacrifices for others to the Father, through the Holy Spirit, who is un-conditional Love flowing through us ("O Lord, make me an instrument of your peace!" -St. Francis of Assisi; "My soul Magnifies the Lord!" -Mary in Luke 1:46 :D). I do disagree, however with the point your article makes concerning this: "When we feel compassionate love toward an unbeliever that is the presence of the Holy Spirit leading us to bring that person into the Kingdom. When we feel compassion for someone then we have forgiven their sins." It is not so that through feelings we can know someone's sins have been forgiven. As humans, our feelings are kept in balance when they are informed by reason. It is not reasonable to assume the man/woman we have prayed for, for their sins to be forgiven have truly become sorrowful for their own sin; sorrow, or contrition which is necessary for one to truly be reconciled to Christ. Furthermore, I firmly believe that Jesus commissioned the Apostles and their successors to be humble mediators IN the person of Christ (not AS Christ), to hear sins and sincere acts of contrition from those who wish to be reconciled with the Church, who is the Body of Christ. This understanding is confirmed both as historically and Scripturally valid. Will you take a moment to read this article that clarifies my point? www.catholic.com/blog/tim-staples/is-confession-in-scripture-0.

At first it may have been ritual, an empty gesture, and it was good that you're heart became restless, that you longed for more, for Him. that yearning inspired by the holy spirit led you to Him. But that faith must be nourished, and Christ knew that, so He have us baptism, communion, marriage, our vocations, that we may live out our faith with one another, the faithful, the church. Okay, I have been following your series for many years. While I do agree most of what they convey, there are also things which I don't. In this one, I kind of agrees with the author of the video you were commenting upon. I too used to go to the church (Catholic).
I was a catholic. And then as years go on, I just notice things that are not based anywhere from the bible.
    1. The praying to Mary and other saints. Why? What the bible says is that we should only pray to God, with the name of Jesus, so why would I pray to Mary who is just as human as we all are. Like if people were to confess their sins, they are told to pray such prayers for a number of times and so on.
    2. Praying for the dead. Again why? The word Purgatory isn't even mentioned (not even once) in the bible. Catholics makes this practice every november 1 as All Sain'ts day, praying for the dead, offering food for/to them, pouring holy water to them and so on. On what basis is this done for? If a person dies, according to the bible, the spirit returns to God, who gave it in the first place, not go to some sort of limbo or another dimension. What the bible says is that there is only heaven and hell, and this world we live in. No such thing as purgatory. And again on the point of praying for the dead and things like that, isn't that also said in the bible that it is considered a sin? What gives. And another point, I think that in a way, this praying for the dead and pouring holy water or whatever the term is, has become some sort of money making for the church. Here in PH, you pay an amount so the priest will bless your dead relatives and there are 2 types, two. Special prayer and the regular one, I mean what is this, If i pay for the special one, does that makes my dead relative have a special treatment from God? BS is what I'm saying.
    3. December 25. You make this date as if it is the birthdate of our Savior Jesus Christ (pun intended), NOWHERE in the bible that is stated and yet the catholic church tries to label it that way.
    4. Ceremonies. Catholic church have many ceremonies than just go directly to teaching about the words of God. Why are they needed anyway, to make it more dramatic or something?
    5. Praying to Man-made sculptures of heavenly beings AND even human entities. People prays to a sculpture of Jesus, sculpture of saints proclaimed by the church, to a sculpture of Mary and many more. I thought these things were mentioned on the bible and were considered as a sin. Or in all the teaching of the church, it was never mentioned. This is a violation of the Number 1 in the 10 commandments. How i hope you emphasized these to your congregations and have them understand it well and then remove such parts of the religion. You are contradicting what you are preaching and have the members commit sin in the process, including you. There is no need to pray to these sculpture when you can talk to God himself directly by praying. You don't need a medium to talk to God but by prayer.
    6. Politics. Now on this one, I don't know if it is observed in your country, but here in the Philippines, every election period, Priests mostly advertise these candidates to their members, and on personal experience, out of 200 people during a mass and the priest did this, nearly half of the people walked out, including me. They talk about politics and these candidates rather than preaching the words of God, They even let these politicians speak in front of the members during a mass.
In my perspective, the church has mixed religion with cultures of this world with the words of God, wherein in the first place, they shouldn't. Those two can't and shouldn't mix.
Again, I am just pointing out the things that had made me lose faith in the church, but not in God.
Religion does not save you, faith does.
I suggest you should encourage your members to read the Bible more in addition to attending the church. In that way, they will be more enlightened by the truth of the words of God and not just leave that work to the church.

Neither of the options you present for salvation, are true.
You present Luther's "salvation by faith alone" as "faith minus work implies salvation".
You present your option "salvation by work and faith", which could be written as "faith + work implies salvation".
The truth is however "faith implies salvation + works".
Or as Jacob puts it: show me your faith without work and I will show you my faith through works.
This is how work and faith is connected. Then it all makes sense. Faith alone saves (Roman 10, John 3,16 etc), but faith without work is dead (aka is not actually faith at all) (Jacob). Hence faith implies both work and salvation. There is nothing you could do to earn salvation but believe ( hence good work is not required to be saved, or else a lamb man and the thief on the cross next to Jesus would be doomed). But to believe in Christ inevitably leads to actions. It is an active faith. Your faith is what you (trust in and thus) act out, not merely what you think or say without acting like you believe it.
Or as Bill Watterson put it so neatly:
-" do you think our morality is defined by our actions, or by what's in our hearts?"
-"I think our actions SHOW what's in our hearts."

  • @AdamRTNewman
    @AdamRTNewman 11 років тому +1

As an Evangelical Christian, what I believe is this: At both the point of conversion, and right throughout our Christian lives, we rest faith in Christ alone for our salvation, based not on our works but upon Christ's redemptive work. When brought into relationship with God, since He is our Lord and we love Him, this must then affect how we live. To reject the lifestyle that's consistent with what it means to be saved, is to reject salvation. But at foundational level, we put faith in Christ ...

@@BishopBarron During my faith walk, I've come acrossed many interesting characters with their warped view on religion. Many religious leaders have twisted the real meaning of religion. Religion doesn't save you as many people believe. This religion is the only way to salvation, they said. No. Religion, REAL religion, is suppose to point you to Jesus Christ and His teachings. Salvation is through faith in Jesus Christ by Grace, which the Bible teaches. So I made the decision that if what you teach is not backed by the Bible, then your teachings/Religion is flawed. Yes, Jesus did come not to change the law, but rather to FULFILL the law. What this means is that - since the standard previous to His birth, was that all should follow the law without fail, which was an impossible feat - Jesus needed to come to earth, be tempted by everything temptation, and resist them all, so that after his death and resurrection, we could be clothed in HIS righteousness and be cover in the veiled of his perfect walk. This is why Jesus wasn't born and immediately sacrificed - he needed to not only display the new covenant through actions, but also live a perfect.
Paul talks about those that still try to follow the law and says that "Jesus is of no use to them". For those of us that trust is Christ's perfection, as well as His death & resurrection, God no longer sees our sin or flaws, he only sees Jesus and his perfection. There is nothing we can do to earn it or make it happen apart from accepting Jesus as Savior
religion complicates the faith process by adding a "doing element" to the equation - ie. good works, pennants, and ritualistic ceremony. Sometimes when we do and say the same things, it can easily become an act of repetition and the place where we put our faith. Over time, spiritual faith wanes because it isn't needed any longer.
I know a lot of people that put a heavier importance on their church going/devotion rather than just Jesus... this is what happens when you introduce an action or tangible concept into faith. It's the human condition to gravity towards the easy road, as opposed to simply believing in an invisible God without your actions intervening - that is a true test of faith, imo

I believe that what he meant by those "Sharp wedges" was that we rely to much on the things we do rather than on the Lord's sustaining grace. And this is very evident in today's believers. Try asking them why they should go to heaven, and I'm sure that most of the responses would be along the lines of "Cuz I go to Church" or "Cuz I do good" or maybe even "Cuz I give to charity". The video was trying to tell us that we should put Jesus first above all things, because in today's world where almost everything has a merit system on it, we tend to forget who is at the center of it all. I'd also like to point out, with all due respect, that we shouldn't be looking at this whole thing as being influenced by certain backgrounds and people(e.g Martin Luther) and by no means any form of political view. Martin Luther was a famous icon for Evangelism but by no means represent the whole. He had his views that some(?) practices by the Church were demonic, but this is not the case with all "Evangelical" Christians. People use the term "Evangelical Christian" as form of grouping but in reality, the proper term who are in the supposed denomination are called(for the most part) simply "Followers of Chirst" as an example is the person who made the video. Try looking into the guy's background and you'll understand what I mean. But regardless of this, great job on the video, it was very insightful :)

The problem here stems from the idea that faith and works are somehow separate. They are not. They are inseparable. James clearly says that faith without works is dead. Paul clearly states that works without faith is useless. They are united, just as the heart and brain are inseparable in a symbiotic union, neither surviving without the other.
Faith is the invisible church working in us, prompted by the holy spirit, works is the visible church, the church laboring in creation for the furtherance of God's plan. Christ's sacrifice on the cross was very much a "work," a physical representation of the spiritual grace bestowed upon us.
If works are truly useless, it leaves Christ's death on the cross as irrelevant. If Christ's work and faith had meaning, why doesn't ours?

Jesus stated, “by no works shall you be saved” So did Jesus not know what he was talking about??
