Hexagons look 1000 time better than that triangle mess. The only problem is their color dont match with the desk behind you. Greenish-blue and baby blue...
Personally, the triangle mess didn't bother me until he mentioned it, then I couldn't stop seeing it. The hexagons don't bother me at all. It's not super neat or interesting but they get the job done. I do see how it clashes with the desk.
The nice thing about coming across these multi-part videos months or years after the fact is that you can binge watch all of them without having to wait for the next instalment to get posted. If I had been following your channel 2 years ago when you were actually building this new studio and saw a part# in the title, I would have been like wholly crap I have to wait for part 2? So ya it's much better when you can see the entire project from start to finish without having to wait.
The hexagons look good, but that table surface is too bright for them, looks like you're doing green screen... or maybe you didn't grade that part of the video different from the rest of the video and a bit of color grading would fix the look since the stills you showed look fine.
The wall just needs to be lit brighter so he can stop the camera down and expose for both the table and the background instead of just the background which is blowing out the table.

Exactly why I would never want anyone to rush because of me. Time will always be there, but a healthy pain-free body won’t. It’s a great reminder for us to take life at our own pace.
If you pick a single color that you can live with for the background, then you could have the option to use it as a key color and drop in any random background you like. Switch it up every now and then.
Note that you could play around with color ideas before actually repainting, by using secondary color correction in your video editing program. Have a video where the turquoise is replaced by navy blue, and see what people think... have another scene with maroon, etc.
Looks great and I dig the purple! One idea for further sound deadening is to hang sound blankets or even extra heavy-weight moving blankets in front of the shelves behind where the camera is.
The hexagons look okay. The gray isn't solid so it looks out of place with the solid black and navy. The turquoise wood looks absolutely terrible. Repaint gray and everything will come together much more nicely.
@@kurt1391 I disagree. Torquoise is a "soft" and bright color, but it's not being used correctly in this video. Fantastic studio! I agree with Ben Heck - lighter on the navy/dark grey hexagons and darker on the counter surface. Still, it's a very polished look and phenomenal overall. Glad you don't have any lasting injuries, and excited for the videos coming up!
The hexagons are better than triangles, but... something about it just doesn't look right. I think it's the same problem as with triangles - the background looks busy and attracts attention. Which is completely the opposite of what background is supposed to do. The solid light blue wall in the old studio was much more pleasant as a background.
Hexagons are too contrasty between themselves. I would drop the dark blue and replace with light grey. That being said, we watch the show for the 8 bit goodies so don't let aesthetic in the way of the machines :-) Glad to see all is back to normal at your home.
The two shades of blue with the charcoal in the hexagonal panels really make the studio look unique and way more awesome than the old studio and looks really nice. It kinda inspires me to want to build my gaming studio in something similar to what you have done. Nice work on the project! 😊
You're studio looks a bit like a 50's diner. Pretty nice. Glad to hear your house is all fixed up, and you are fully recovered from your solid snake practice.
The hexagons are fine, but the video portion at the end had the color grading a little too cool. It should be warmer like the photos at the end with the guests.
Not wrong on the suggestion. I was also adding that wall mounting his yellow drum keyboards like he did before might also help. Is missing some light colors (yellow for example), and these would be perfect while not adding to much ! :)
The entrance room seriously look better. I don’t think you’re supposed to have a wall full of those hexagons like that. Paint the wall light grey then have two small sections of those hexagons like the entrance room, would be my suggestion.
Hanging removals rugs, works every time. Hexagons not so much, I agree with you. I would go with a cool 50% grey with some angled 80bit stripes, but congratulations, it's really coming together.
The hex background is fine, but you’re going to change it eventually. You clearly don’t love it and you’re the sort of tinkerer that doesn’t stop until you love what you’ve made. That’s something I’ve always appreciated about you and your videos.
I mean at this point, the injury, blizzard causing a flood, spider bite, are you just like like "Eh, pandemic life"? I feel like some of us have gotten to the point that bad luck just seems status quo! Glad you're getting healed up, the house back in order and studio coming along. That's a lot to have to deal with. That clip showing the bruises on your arm...yikes!
The new studio looks great! That pic of the spider bite just brought back a memory I had nearly forgotten about. I had a brown recluse bight in nearly the same spot when I was in USMC basic training. I tried to hide it because I didn't want to get dropped back, but it got really bad. It finally got noticed and I was sent to the docs to get it checked out. They drained it and left me with a hole big enough that I could put my pinky in. That was right at the start of the rifle range section of basic training which could not be missed so I had to kneel on it for hours at a time in excruciating pain or risk getting dropped back (my graduation date was my grandpa's birthday so I didn't want to get dropped).
The most excited and happy I've seen David be in a while. It's very encouraging to see David invest so much of his time and money to bring US more and better content. Well done David, you have a lot of reason to be proud of what you've built (from nothing)! We'll be here in eager anticipation.
Audio and large table are great. The hexagons are okay, I’d paint over them and somehow darken the table top. Either way I’m just glad you’re okay and my favorite channel is back 😁😁
Where the hexagons are concerned: I like 'em just fine, but the uncovered patches of wall below counter level kinda draw the eye toward themselves. I think I would want to cover them and maybe a little bit more too, so as to not constrain your camera angles too much.
Don’t want to be negative, but the background in the office is way better than the background in the studio. The background in the studio is even more distracting than the previous one. I love the background in the office. You should use that design. The idea is for the eyes to focus on you and your project, not on the wall.
Interesting. 2 quick hints. For better quick sound deadening, try hanging two large thick white Towels (like the ones at Costco) over your shelf's in the studio, not only will it help with reducing echo, it will also help brighten up the studio. And be careful of the window tint, if it gets to hot in direct sunlight, it can cause the glass to crack.
I would paint the walls to match the dark grey hexagons, and the bench legs to match the light blue ones, and put some rubber cover on top of the bench, like those gym floors, it would be great for sound, lights and gentle with the stuff you put on it. they come in hexagons too.
As a Minnesotan, it's fascinating to see how little snow can effect different parts of the country. I never considered how different places will build homes and infrastructure differently and not plan for cold weather because it's just not reasonable to expect it. Nice studio. Glad it didn't get messed up in the storm. Also glad you were able to recover from that flood
I like the hexagons, they aren’t jarring to the eyes like the vinyl stickers were. I think you are amazing, no matter what is thrown at you (spiders, flooding or falls) you keep going and ooze positivity. Smart and practical, I wish I was too.
As someone from a completely different part of the world, the way americans make their walls out of thin boards is always fascinating to me. I'd be way too worried about stumbling and accidentally crashing *through* a wall, I think. :(
1/2” sheet rock isn’t really that thin, and it’s supported every 18” by 2x4” wooden studs. You would be having a really bad day if you ended up going _through_ it.
I also come from a place with brick walls, but we have few drywall walls in some places, and you will be surprised how much abuse they can take. Also can you recall the last time you crashed into any wall :D
Drywall is surprisingly strong! … But there’s a few random parts of my wall that are made of actual cardboard. Like what a TV dinner comes in. I don’t know how or why but I’m guessing it was an aftermarket patch by the previous owners. They should’ve done it right though because it got kicked in pretty fast on accident (next to a bed).
Sheet rock is exactly that- gypsum stone mixed in a slurry and formed into boards. When screwed on 18” studs on both sides of a wall it forms a rigid structural member that is able to withstand settling, earthquakes, and impacts. When damaged it is easily repaired. It’s environmentally friendly as you are not digging the earth for stone, and an insulated stud wall is far more efficient than the massive heat/cold sink of a masonry wall. It’s also much more fire resistant than a timber wall. It is equal to the task with a significant margin, but not massive overkill. It promotes rapid construction of quality affordable housing. It’s “modern” technology. Any questions?
Simplest solution for back wall is a light shade of gray (that plays as white on camera). Next level solution is getting a soft light source over your head, maybe about two or three feet forward from your "host" position. A shop light, with two LED tubes in it could work. Test placement with a stand first, to avoid the glasses reflection issue. (A key light dangling from a somewhat "toppy" position avoids reflections, but still acts as a proper key.) Alternatively, see if you can just bounce a hard light into that white ceiling about 45 degrees forward of where you stand. You can also spray "Streaks and Tips" (a hair product) on the background lights, covering maybe 50% of the face of each light. That reduces their intensity, if they aren't independently dimmable.
I like the white desk, when he is display, restoring, fixing something, you can see what he is doing, if you are using darker color you could lose something, like a screw, take time to recover.
Beautiful new studio! The hexagons don't look perfect, but they are much better than I thought they would be. Maybe you should have put the white ones instead of the black ones, though - I think the "worse than I hoped" effect is because of them. Maybe you can try putting them on temporarily in place of the black ones and shoot a test video like this?
White ones will have way too much contrast and make the subject look backlit. I would go for a different shade of blue or teal or some other color if possible - that way the subject pops!
@@grproteus not really. ONLY the white ones will have too much contrast and make Dave look backlit, right. But white + blue + cyan can look really good. Anyway, it's impossible to tell without trying. Maybe another shade of blue gonna look better, why not.

Hexagons look 1000 time better than that triangle mess. The only problem is their color dont match with the desk behind you. Greenish-blue and baby blue...
The desk also still washes out the image.
Color selection is all over the place 😂
Personally, the triangle mess didn't bother me until he mentioned it, then I couldn't stop seeing it.
The hexagons don't bother me at all. It's not super neat or interesting but they get the job done.
I do see how it clashes with the desk.
I was also thinking painting the visible bit of wall might help blend it too
+improvement on video quality on lower resolutions, less fuzziness on the screens...
Perhaps that why my comment that i liked the hexagons layout in the other room better, it compensates the light/white table.
Yeah
The wall just needs to be lit brighter so he can stop the camera down and expose for both the table and the background instead of just the background which is blowing out the table.

Much respect for keeping your old plasma TV around! I still have my 60" LG about a year before LG discontinued plasmas altogether.
Plasma TV'S give the best picture when playing Sega Genesis games.
Unfortunately they are heavy and no longer in production.
If you pick a single color that you can live with for the background, then you could have the option to use it as a key color and drop in any random background you like. Switch it up every now and then.
That’s a really good idea
Green screen? lol
I do love when my favorite channels comment on each other! I'm positively Ogerwhelmed right now!
Tbey

If you're going to keep the hexagons, you need to repaint the vic-20 turquoise items. They clash horribly!
Yes I agree. The two blues don't mesh.
Second this motion!
Note that you could play around with color ideas before actually repainting, by using secondary color correction in your video editing program. Have a video where the turquoise is replaced by navy blue, and see what people think... have another scene with maroon, etc.
i second that

@@MatthewCobalt That's what I was going to say!

I like them too. It feels like the inside of a spaceship.
Looks great and I dig the purple! One idea for further sound deadening is to hang sound blankets or even extra heavy-weight moving blankets in front of the shelves behind where the camera is.
The hexagons look cool, but the turquiose wood definitely clashes.
I'm come to the conclusion that turquoise doesn't match anything.
I agree. really like it but would paint over the turqouise with the navy blue colour, or grey
@@kurt1391 it matches anything pastel and every tint of pink.
The hexagons look okay. The gray isn't solid so it looks out of place with the solid black and navy. The turquoise wood looks absolutely terrible. Repaint gray and everything will come together much more nicely.

I disagree. Torquoise is a "soft" and bright color, but it's not being used correctly in this video.
Here's a combo that always works together in RGB

#01A9BB - Light turquoise
#FFFFDE - Pale Yellow
#DBE5EF - Light Grey (With tones of blue)
#52626F - Dark Grey (With tones of blue)
Honestly "everyone hated the vinyl" is an overstatement. All the ones that hated it commented on it and everyone else didn't care so you only saw the hate. But it's true hexagon is the superior shape
I think it was spot on. Didnt look good. And when people first come to a channel, if its visually appealing there is more of a chance they will stay.
I didn't mind it at all. It was perfectly fine to me.
@@slightlyevolved Absolutely. I think it would look perfect with the gray ones. Or maybe if they were another shade of blue, even if it costed a lot of money i think it would be worth it
Well that and the hexagons are sound deadening where as the stick on vinyl wasn't.
All he got on the vinyl were negative comments, so it was easy to assume “everyone hated it.”

The new studio came out amazing! A big upgrade and you keep the 8-bit vibe. I think the tiles in the back are okay, but you can make it a whole lot better with some simple lighting :-)
Feel free to reach out if you like some advice on the lighting!
Yes! Also choosing a better frame (maybe with a wider angle lens) and setting the white balance properly. I think I'll look cool.
yep if you compare the video from the photos the video is lacking warmth - easy fix and the new place looks great already
@@nernesto I'd say: camera further away and more zoomed in, wide angles distort the image and if you are unlucky, also a persons body characteristics in a negative way (look at the picture from Joe and Jill Biden that looked alien). Most videocamera's will be unable to reach that kind of wide-angle reach, but still, it's better to avoid wide angles.
I like the hexagons myself, I am going to miss the display of toy keyboards to the left as it was an iconic look of your old studio. Congrats on all the work done.

I worry a bit about the grounded strip. If that switch isn't rated for high voltage and you accidentally connect yourself to a CRT HV line, it might jump that switch and ground you anyway.
The desk room is better decorated than the studio. Sometimes less is more.

I like the hexagons, though I would have stuck with the lighter gray. But that's just my preference!
The hexagons are better than triangles, but... something about it just doesn't look right.
I think it's the same problem as with triangles - the background looks busy and attracts attention. Which is completely the opposite of what background is supposed to do.
The solid light blue wall in the old studio was much more pleasant as a background.
Yeah, it's still too much contrast in the background for my taste too.
This. Trying too hard with the background.
Was thinking that the whole video: Why not flat light blue in the background like before?
I think the hexagons can work, but they should be a lighter tone and have less contrast between themselves.
It's not symmetrical on the left and right walls, really throws it off.
It looks different and idk how I feel about it but it grew on me the more I looked at it
Hexagons are too contrasty between themselves. I would drop the dark blue and replace with light grey. That being said, we watch the show for the 8 bit goodies so don't let aesthetic in the way of the machines :-) Glad to see all is back to normal at your home.

I was confused a bit since the video was uploaded on June 29.

Yes, a splash of light on the background is needed.
The entrance room seriously look better. I don’t think you’re supposed to have a wall full of those hexagons like that.
Paint the wall light grey then have two small sections of those hexagons like the entrance room, would be my suggestion.

The white hexagons looked way better than the grey ones. 😅

The idea is for the eyes to focus on you and your project, not on the wall.
probably better if the background is less busy pattern wise and more just electronics clutter.
That fall looked so painful, Great to see that you heal good, David!
And, It’s awesome to see the new Studio!!
Yay hexagons are fun. Especially since they don’t break up his shape so much due to having lower contrast
The Hexagons are much better than the blue triangles/polygons you had before.
Hexagons are the bestagons!
Yup, but the bench is too bright I think
I like the hexagons it has a sort of Doctor Who Tardis aesthetic.
Clint: I'm missing the woodgrain.
I feel like a little lighting in the back, like led strips as an underglow on the shelves, could go a long way here.
I would paint the walls to match the dark grey hexagons, and the bench legs to match the light blue ones, and put some rubber cover on top of the bench, like those gym floors, it would be great for sound, lights and gentle with the stuff you put on it. they come in hexagons too.
The hexagons give me a holodeck feel for some reason. I dig it.
The only problem with the hexagons is that they clash with the VIC-20 blue, making the bench behind you look really out of place.
I personally like the hexagons they give a relatively modern look.
Yep, only bricks and concrete here.

The hexagons are fine, it's the white of the desk I don't like. A darker grey would be much better imho
If the woodwork of the desk supports and back matched the hexagons, it would be nice. I like the hex background.
the turquoise + blue tones combination is a design sin for sure but I'm glad if he's happy with it
I like the white desk, when he is display, restoring, fixing something, you can see what he is doing, if you are using darker color you could lose something, like a screw, take time to recover.
I agree, I think the white ones might still look better.
I fully agree, the colors in the other room would be perfect.
