Great Video, Sean and Kevin, love the work you do and the education/sharing.
Great video Sean, keep pushing them out, God Bless
I really hope that the new cam phasers and chain tensioner have been redesigned so that they are more "robust". I'm sure the labor for this repair is very expensive.
Another awesome video from the McMedics. Don't know how you do it, Don't want to know.... just keep doing what you're doing! :)
Merci je regarde souvent vos vidéo et très bon commentaires et analyses,félicitations à votre équipe
Hi guys - @ 5:11 you verify the cam positions at TDC with a straight edge across the cams. On my engine (no longer in a McLaren but swapped into a mini truck), when I remove my cam covers and set Piston1 to TDC, all 4 of my cams are off - both tilted toward each other (neither are horizontal). It's a low mileage engine so I don't suspect 4x phaser failure. Obviously there is no power on the solenoids, or oil pressure at this time but does the system retain the position at power off? I get no 'slap' or jump of the cams when I turn the crank over by hand (as you do at 5:54) BUT as soon as I start applying duty to the solenoids I get terrible knocking/rattling sounds from the cams. I don't know enough about how the phasers work, not the strategy the ECU used to apply duty to the solenoids and it's proving very challenging to find out!
Awesome work as always Sean/Kevin! How many miles did that 650S have? I know all this varies per every single car, but just curious. Thanks for sharing!
24k I think it was on this one. It's definitely not a mileage related issue.
Well it definitely makes sense why my mechanic said my car's not worth the cam phasers. To think this was already done before on this engine!
That's poor oil maintenance, it definitely shouldn't happen twice.
Ok, so it looks like it has later version of phasers from a P13. They are not backwards compatible, bad luck for the owner. Someone did work on this car who didnt know the goodies. Shame. Also cylinder 1 is the same on LHD and RHD. The phaser was internally not in the correct position as commanded by the ecu, hence the pin socket inside failing.
Fantastic Shawn thank you for sharing! Also 3 Chain (I mean 4 chain) always provides excellent and articulate commentary. How much are cam phasers?- I would imagine that all McLaren parts have gone up significantly over the past 24 months- also what do you charge per hr.? New subscriber here and exactly the content I was looking for.
We flat rate jobs, in the case of cam phasers you're looking at $10k start to finish.
How much are the cam phasers are how available are they . Iam about to do my 570s. As it has all these symptoms . Great video. Funny thing my car has a wire going to the fuse that controls electric thermostat and cam actuator . When I remove it it throws codes like crazy …. Needles to say some one covered this up well enough to sell the car . Time to do it right !
I haven't priced those parts since the last price hike, plan on $3,000 might be less. Availability hasn't been a problem on them.
The oil looks filthy, that cause the chain tensioner to fail?
There is a spring inside the tensioner, that spring fatigues or breaks. Oil pressure makes it work while it's running.
And after some time, the camphasers go bad again? Or are there an upgrade?
They go bad because of maintenance, not general failure.
When you start the car every time will it make that clicking noise first? I cold started mine and it sounded like it had a clanking sound and then when driving I saw CEL was on. I turned off and back on multiple times and it started normally without that clanking noise but CEL was still on.
The clanking sound in the first second or two is typically weak chain guide tensioners which are not a problem but should be replaced if you're ever in there for some other reason
@@McMedics I assume it's covered by warranty? I have the extended McLaren warranty. I was actually looking at service records from before I owned it and it does look like this issue has happened twice before
I don't know if they'll do chain tensioners under warranty. I know every car does it after a few years but doesn't cause any issues.
@@McMedics I see, thanks. Does this also explain the CEL coming on, then going away after letting it sit for 30 minutes? I saw the previous work was done under warranty so would hope that this will be as well when I take it in
I think the CEL is unrelated based on what You're describing
Is this a relatively expected failure befor 100k miles or a rare occurrence?
It's never a expected failure
What are the labor hours for that whole job?
30-35 hrs.
Worth noting, spyders take way longer than coupe's too.
Holy shit lol.. that was scary sounding
Aren’t these engines across the range? Is this a known problem like 2000s Ferrari and Maserati V8s?
It's a problem created by owners. They fail because of historical oil maintenance neglect, not changing oil on time and running it low on oil.
Unacceptable at 23k miles
It can happen at any mileage if you don't keep up with oil level and condition.
Its powered by BMW...what do you expect ? The lowest possible quality at the highest possible price....
I'd expect someone to know what they're talking about before making a snide comment. It's not powered by BMW.
I do apologise, I was under the impression that it was still powered by a BMW engine.
Only the F1 is
