- Thanks for checking out how I made this DIY Dog Treadmill / Carpet-mill for my Siberian Husky, Ghost. Ghost loves to run, I'm sure he would do it all day long if he could! However, when it comes to rain, he isn't the biggest fan. That's when I decided to try and make this treadmill for him so he can run inside during inclement weather. This was a fun afternoon project that can be done with basic hand tools. Make sure your dog only uses this under proper supervision, and make sure you train your dog to use it safely!
Material list:

this is exactly what ive been looking for to build for my pitbull until i can afford a proper slat mill thankyou hope to see your husky running full steam ahead on it soon
That's awesome to hear! Let me know how it goes!! He's been a little busy jumping in snow and having a blast in the backyard recently!
Same I have a high energy pitbull ( Amstaff) and this is what I needed
Same here!
Me too 5 pitbulls
Is your pittie enjoying it? I’ve got a rambunctious lil pit and I’m hoping this will be worth it to build
I like the concept. I would have loved to see it in action!
I’ve got a Doberman pup and a ACD x border collie and this is about to be a lifesaver for our household until we can afford our own slat mills!
Aww they sound like quite the pair! My mom had a collie growing up, and from what I heard she was the best! I hope they like it!!
Thank you SO much! Im going to build one of these for my friend's young Doberman. Winter has FAR too much energy for her to keep up. The Doggy Day Camp he attends w days a week has a slat mill so he can learn how from the experts!
cant wait for the demo!
Thank you I cant wait to make one! This was very helpful
Has you made anything like this. If yes please share it.
Oh, so awesome. Have primed my husband that he has a job for the weekend 😆👍👍👍👍👍🙏
Love it! I hope the pup loves it!
This is pretty cool, might give it a go.
Good job thank you im going to.try to build one!
Good Luck! Let me know how it goes! Definitely train your pup to be used to it, especially if they are scared! I started by just throwing treats on the treadmill so Ghost was comfortable around it. Eventually he started putting a paw on it to get a treat, and then was standing on it. Then I finally clipped him in and let him start to try and use it. Definitely do not rush this! It will be better for the pup in the long run!!
Thank you so much 😊
Great job, very useful
Thank you so much!
Awesome build man, I got a Pitsky I just adopted from the pound and she has WAY more energy than me lol. So thank you for the video! My only suggestion (if you don’t already) is to get a set of 90° clamps, they changed my build quality 10 fold with having perfect squares screwed/nailed/glued together every time!
awesome job.... so how is it working a year later
I have two Husky's. They also hate the rain.
Did you dog eventually use the treadmill ? Would love to see it in action.
Would you please add the dimensions of the wood and make the list of materials exact? I am on a fixed income and not a builder so I need to know everything to be able to start doing it on my own. New pup on the way and since I'm disabled, this will be a great blessing to make! Thank you!
Did he ever use it?
An that's beautiful, I have a milinois husky mix, I'm going to build her one, thank you dir
Best of luck!!!
Kind of funny with a build and no in-use shots.
Whats really funny is my Sheltie took to my wife's electric treadmill when young.
Can remember the 2nd time he was on it when I turned it up a bit and he took off on it. Got so into it that he started pooping and it looked like he was expelling little tootsie rolls that were hitting the belt and shooting away. Funny as hell, he's 10 now, and I should go out and find a used one on Craigslist.
Hey very cool mabe put some tread little more fun for ghost problly freak him out less very cool tho good job.
Video of him using l have 5 pitbulls lm interested in making thanks for your wonderful work
Thank you for sharing this project! We can't wait to see Ghost running full tilt on the treadmill on rainy days 😍👟☔. Is he enjoying it so far?
He still much prefers to run around outside, and with the addition of his new baby sister Nova, hes been doing more playing than running!
@@thewoodworkinghusky3284 That's fair! That's great that Nova is helping him stay active! 😍
Have you made it dear.?
what kind of steel wire did you use and where you got it from?
I feel like it needs more rollers.. and maybe beatings? Idk it looks fine but as a few cheap upgrades that would be nice I think
Did you sew the belt with wire? What size and do you think it could handle a small motor to make the belt turn?
Did it turn out working? I want to build one if it works
How did you prevent static electricity from building up?
I can't find part 2?
How long did you make the frame? Awesome job btw, this was very helpful
That's great to hear! It took maybe 30-45 minutes between cutting all of the pieces and screwing them together. The use of a stop block made the bracing pieces super easy and super fast to cut the same size piece accurately. The longest part by far was sowing the carpet together to make it a longer piece (note to self: get a smaller dog, or a bigger carpet next time)
Bigger as in thicker?
@@thewoodworkinghusky3284 I think he meant how long is it in terms of the dimensions of the work
I think you need sideboards. They will act like blinders on a horse and your dog won't be as scared to get running on it.
Not a bad idea at all, I might try and add something to try that out! I forgot to mention in the video, but that's why I have it facing into the room, and not into a wall haha
Any updates on the tred mill?
Does it actually work? I didn’t see any dog running on it in the video how does it work?
First let me say thank you for sharing. I would love to make this, unfortunately you weren't very clear on the rollers part. If the wood inside the pvc was screwed to the pvc, and was made immobile, how do the rollers roll? I am sorry, but I am just not sure how to fasten the rollers to the frame to allow them to roll that well. You showed screws in both sides, but those screws can't be the only thing holding the rollers in place, or they would thread themselves out.
Please explain
I am going to try and make one for my heeler x malanois
That's awesome! Let me know how it goes!
Hey! We have a husky too and I really want to try making this for her. Have you got dimensions just so I can gather up how much it'll cost us?
I tried to make it pretty close to Ghost's dimensions. I came up with the calculations by:
- 1.5x his width
- His longest stride (got him while he was passed out on the couch) + 1 foot (although this added length might be different for much smaller/bigger dogs)
- And I made sure that I made the harness strap support about 8" taller than he is!
All in I think I spent about $60-70 on this, but I also had some things, in the garage already, + the cost of wood has gone up. I would say maybe 80-100 as a guess.
Hope this helps! Let me know how it goes!
Like the idea and outcome, but why no video of your husky using it?🤔
Great build! Would this be sturdy enough for a 100 lb dog?
Looks pretty solid. The vertical brace probably needs more support
does it work good?
or need more rollers
I’ve been using an electric mill for about 15-17 years with the various dogs I’ve had the pleasure to own. I had a carpet mill quite a while ago and in my experience most of my dogs didn’t run as well on it as they did with the electric. The carpet as you know only moves if the dog makes it move so I had to motivate them with their favorite toy or tug toy in front of them. Then they’d run for a minute or two. That’s why the electric has been my choice. You can set it to 2.0mph with about 3% incline they will jog for about 10-15 minutes and you can decrease their speed if they look tired or shorten their jog. You asked for requests for another build, would you build a slat mill? They are motor less like the carpet but they move quick with the rollers going all the down the surface they run on. You might already know what they are but if not you could research a little. Thanks and great job BYW on this build I hope your baby has a blast I know mine do take care
Thank you for this! Yes electric would be 10000% easier for the dogs to move on, however was not in my budget. Slats could make for another interesting build, this is something I am definitely going to do some more research on. Thank you for the amazing feedback!!
Your Siberian Husky will enjoy a slatmill. Just like the carpet mill it’s dog powered not motor powered but the slat mill can be real fast. Good luck with your research I look forward to the video if you end up making one. Thanks
For some this is more accessible than other options. It costs a fraction for those of use without a ton of disposable income. Might not be the best of the options, but I feel it works in a pinch!
Did he ever use it? Does it work well?
Looks good dud.. But where is the video of him riding it? Or anyone riding for that matter? Shouldnt u have like a showcase or something besides a static photo? Ty..
I'm very interested in a DIY pet treadmill. Can I repurpose a motorized treadmill and just change out the rollers and tensioners? That seems a lot easier. I'm no where hear your level of woodworking.
Dimensions of the carpet mill please 😇
Hi, could I purchase a blue print from you for my lab/shepard mix? I’m very interested
There are no plans on your website as stated. Do you not still offer them?
So go with black spay paint cause it drys fast ✍️✔️
❤️❤️❤️❤️
Thanks for the support!
How much did all the materials cost? $$$$$? Thanks
I am going to build this but pls tell me that the board in 1:25 is MDF board or which material you are using for this board
And also pls tell what is the thickness of this board
I used 1/4" plywood for that!
Wondering where I can find copper tubing like yours? Everything I found, the diameter was too big.
This was something I had some issues with as well. I went to a hardware store near my house, and found a little brass insert. It did not fit all the way through the 2x4, but it was enough to keep the nail from rubbing against it. Hope that helps!
Thanks!
Does ghost use the treadmill yet?
How long is your tread mill also how long was your carpet? I also have a Siberian husky
I made it about 1.5-2 times longer than his full span, that way he has room to stride.
How much did this end up costing you to make in supplies?
About $60-70, but I know the cost of materials has gone up recently, so it may end up costing more now. I also had some materials left over from previous projects. Maybe 90-100 in total if I were to do it today with no scrap materials.
how much carpet did you use? and where did you get it?
A *ROUGH* estimate (pun intended) would be about 15 ft. I got it at home depot, but it only came in 12' strips, so I needed to make it a little longer. You can calculate it by figuring out how long the platform is, multiply it by 2 (top and bottom), and same for the front and back, then add a foot or 2 for slack, the more slack, the easier it is to start the movement!
How much did it cost and how long did it take to make all together?
All in this was about $100, but this was also including some stuff I already had, and the prices of materials have risen significantly of late.
So did this project work? over a year and no part2....
I know I just watched the video but what are the steps to making it? I want to know so I can write it down and do things without having to go back everytime.
1) Get a dog (or a second.. or 5th... as many as you can.
2) measure the dog (make sure the frame is long enough for his/her longest stride (i did 1.5x his stride for ghost)
3) build the frame (leave room on the ends for the rollers, add support studs in the middle)
4) attach plywood to the top of the base (not where the rollers will go). make sure to countersink the holes so the carpet wont grab onto anything
5) make the rollers (pvc pipe + landscaping lumber)
6) attach the rollers to the frame
7) attach legs to the frame
8) attach the carpet to the frame (sow the 2 ends together to create a loop)
9) add the safety support to attach the dog with an old leash / rope with a clip
10) add dog to treadmill
Make sure to train the dog to use it though! Don't want the little guy/girl to be scared on it!
@@thewoodworkinghusky3284 Thank you 😊
@@leafles5309 no problem! Good luck with the build! Let me know how it goes!!
So I'm having problems getting the carpet to move any suggestions
Give the carpet more slack (the tighter it is, the harder it is to start). Try using a wax paste or something to slick up the base a little bit. Make sure the rollers can spin, if there is too much friction, it won't be easy to move. I would also check the carpet to sefe if anything is getting stuck on it. Hope this helps!
What's the measurements?
👍👍👍
can you post the diameters of everything?
Wish you showed it in action. :(
If it's one thing I know about Huskies... they are stubborn! He was reluctant to use it at first, still is sometimes, but there was no way I could get a clip of him using it at the time of making this video :(
@@thewoodworkinghusky3284 try to do an update video of him running on it now! We'd love to see it :)
Thank u my doggy has so much energy we walk about 2 h a day and it’s not enough but maybe with this he will burn is extra energy and it will be nice for our wallet hihi
I know what that's like! I hope it helps!
Did it work well?
It did when he wanted to use it. He is extremely stubborn and preferred to run outside much more. However one of his friends loved it when he came over for a play date haha
Do you know total cost?
I’m just not sure how you got the copper pipe in the hole
I drilled a hole to the correct size (a little smaller for a snug fit), and used a rubber mallet and a piece of scrap to bang the copper into place
So did he ever start running?
He does every once in a while, huskies are super stubborn, and he definitely prefers to run outside. Still a fun project to do!
Is it still working or is it Destoryed Allready?
Still works great, I was more worried about him chewing it up (surprisingly he didn't, maybe the first husky proof item in existence? Who knows) - However, he still prefers to run outside as opposed to this, but he still gets some great use out of it.
Where you get the building timber at
I just got it at a local big box store. I really spent the time to go through and find the best pieces, with the least amount of bend, and knots/etc.
What about the carpet best type of carpet to reccomend ?.
@@apbt4lif335 I just used the cheapest one I could find at the store. The only thing that I was looking out for was something without a rubber backing. I wanted something that would create as little friction as possible
2:15 can you explain what a counter sink is?
I’m going to make this for my mini aussiedoodle! So it’ll be a small one and I’ll definitely let you know how it goes as I want it for my apartment. Thanks for sharing and being so detailed! Loved the vid! Did Ghost ever get less afraid of it or get much use out of it?
Take a bit that is bigger than the head of the screw and drill a shallow hole (about the depth of the screw head). This is so the top of the screw will sit flush with top, creating a flat surface.
hi what's on the floor? what is spinning? material
Thanks for reaching out! I'm not quite sure what you mean, there isn't anything on the floor (except for the legs for the treadmill). The carpet is touching the floor because of the slack in it, but that's all. The carpet spins as the dog walks/runs on it, pushing the carpet backwards, and spinning along the rollers. I hope this helps!
@@thewoodworkinghusky3284 I got it all, what material do I mean? Made the same track, I have carpet and laminate instead of plywood
Something doesn’t slip, so I ask, what material do you have? Also a carpet?
@@user-lp7ze2rk4u I used cheap carpet from a local hardware store, I just made sure it didn't have a rubber backing so the carpet would slide. It moves along 2 rollers, one at the top, and one at the bottom.
Would you sell one?
How much did this cost
Back then I believe I was all in for around 100. But prices for things have definitely gone up since then unfortunately
@@thewoodworkinghusky3284 thank you. And yes definitely. Was trying to compare prices to building one or buying one
Wonder if there is a way to build a dog treadmill without owning 10 grand worth of woodworking equipment. I have a hand saw and a few hammers.
I'm guessing it doesn't work because there is no video of your dog actually on it. Sorry if I'm wrong, but that was a huge oversight.
Thats a fair point. I know there are other videos out there of similar builds that show the concept of what I did. I was just excited to get this out there, and Ghost was not really into it yet. Huskies are notorious for being stubborn, and can be hard to train to do things. This was no different, so I decided to try and put this out before trying to get a clip of him running on it. He still prefers to run outside, but he can be coerced to use this with treats... Lots of them!
No these move fine. A dog that's not trained to run on a carpet mill usually won't.
don't see a video of the thing actually in use....
I made this and it doesn't work! my dog stands on a stationary piece of carpet that doesn't move unless there is no wait on it.
Does the carpet not move at all? Did you leave slack in it? If it is too tight it is extremely difficult to move
Has Anybody made it? Please comment on its working not on how it is made. Your ultimate goal is its working not craftmanship. I don't find any comment on its working from any gentleman.
Hey sir,
I am from India I have Doberman can u plz made it for me Nd send it to me.i will be very grateful for u if u do it for me!! MUST REPLY
So a carpet mill...
yup!
You split the wood…
I know :( I should have predrilled, but I was lazy and wanted to get it done fast.
Have you actually owned a dog?
There is still no Demo because it sucks i guess...
Ummm Band saws aren't basic hand tools..
It's true that I didn't use basic hand tools for this, but its easily replaceable and the same cuts can be made with them. Jig saw instead of a bandsaw, or a hand saw instead of a jig saw. There's always another way!
Hey bro excellent work, but I need to get in contact with you ASAP WhatsApp, Instagram, Email, anything.
im on IG at thewoodworkinghusky
Hey I had used my friend phone for this an last comment use that so you dont have to be wear your not welcome like the treadmill self explanatory like explaining stalking didn't know I was home ha bi sh right
music to loud and your narration to soft
No way did I watch that and you had no demo at the end. Total waste of time.
IT DOESNT WORK. IM NOT THE CREATOR BUT I BUILT THE SAME THING BASED OFF THIS VIDEO!! IT DOESNT WORK!!!!
