  • Using salt water electrolysis to etch copper clad board into homemade PCB is easy, cheap, and safe...but not particularly clean or good. The true challenge is maintaining electrical conductivity to all the necessary pieces throughout the process. It's a neat idea, and it's a shame it doesn't work better.

It's great to see you experimenting whether or not it's a success or failure as that's a key to learning. BTW, I no longer use Ferric Chloride. It's messy and expensive. I have since switched to a mix of HCL (available commonly and cheaply in hardware stores as "Muriatic Acid" used for concrete etching) and "drug store" Hydrogen Peroxide. So both are readily available. I achieved excellent results etching copper clad with that combination.

I don't like etching at all, so I switched a few years ago to CNC milling. A few hundred bucks builds an overkill mill, and it's been smooth sailing. It's also great for very precise drilling, because it's all CNC.

it could be used for the first step to remove the bulk of the copper before the acid bath to extend the acid life.

"Educational failure" is a good phrase. When I was first learning to build circuits I accepted the destruction of components as part of my education. I keep a backup supply for that reason.

This looks like a short circuit too me. Don't you need two electrodes to do electrolysis?! Come on.....
